Chapter 6: The Bracelet With Sophie’s Name

The bracelet sat on the wet pavement like a message left by someone who knew exactly how to break me.

A tiny pink band.

A silver charm.

One name engraved into the metal.

*Sophie.*

For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.

The rain soaked through my shirt, but I barely felt it.

All I could see was that bracelet.

All I could think about was one question.

How did someone who was never supposed to know my daughter have something with her name on it?

“Richard?””

Vanessa’s voice came from behind me.

I turned slowly.

She was standing in the doorway, holding Sophie.

The moment Sophie saw the bracelet, her eyes widened.

“That’s mine.””

My heart dropped.

I walked back inside immediately.

“What did you say?””

Sophie pointed at the bracelet.

“That’s my bracelet.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked confused.

“No.””

I turned back to Sophie.

“Sweetheart, are you sure?””

She nodded.

“Mommy gave it to me.””

The room went silent.

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“Mommy?””

Sophie nodded.

“My real mommy.””

Emily.

My hands went cold.

Emily had been gone for years.

That bracelet should have been somewhere in a memory box.

Not outside our house.

Not left by a man who was supposed to be dead.

I crouched down.

“Sophie, when did Mommy give this to you?””

She looked at the floor, thinking.

“When I was little.””

“You were little?””

She frowned.

“I was smaller.””

A four-year-old’s answer.

Simple.

But impossible.

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked just as shocked as I was.

“Did you know about this bracelet?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Did Emily ever mention it?””

“No.””

“Then why does Daniel have it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Because she didn’t know.

And for the first time, I believed that.

I picked up the bracelet carefully.

The metal was cold from the rain.

But the moment my fingers touched it, I remembered something.

A memory.

Emily sitting on our bedroom floor.

Sophie was only a baby.

Emily was laughing while organizing old jewelry into small boxes.

I had asked her what she was doing.

She smiled and said:

“Saving things she’ll understand someday.””

At the time, I thought she meant toys.

Photos.

Little childhood memories.

I never imagined she meant secrets.

I placed the bracelet on the table.

“We’re not leaving yet.””

Vanessa looked surprised.

“What?””

“If Daniel left this here, he wants us to find something.””

“That’s exactly why we should leave.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“We’ve been running from someone who has controlled the story for years.””

My voice lowered.

“I’m done letting him.””

Vanessa looked at me for a long moment.

Then she whispered:

“Richard, you don’t understand what Daniel is capable of.””

I stepped closer.

“Then make me understand.””

She looked away.

“I told you about the fire.””

“Yes.””

“But I didn’t tell you everything.””

Of course she didn’t.

I felt anger rise again.

“What else?””

Vanessa sat down.

Her hands shook.

“Daniel owned a second property.””

“The one that burned?””

“Yes.””

“What happened there?””

She took a deep breath.

“Officially, nothing.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Officially, the fire was an accident. A wiring problem.””

“And unofficially?””

She looked at me.

“Someone started it.””

I stared at her.

“Who?””

“That’s what Emily was trying to find out.””

I looked toward Sophie.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Because Lily told her.””

The name hit me.

Lily.

The girl who had called me.

The girl Daniel had tried to erase.

“What did Lily tell Emily?””

Vanessa’s face became serious.

“She said Daniel had another reason for disappearing.””

“What reason?””

“He wasn’t running from the law.””

“Then what?””

“He was running from someone who knew what he did.””

I waited.

“Who?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Lily.””

I froze.

“You’re saying he was afraid of his own daughter?””

“Yes.””

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“It does if you know Daniel.””

She leaned forward.

“Daniel spent his whole life creating a perfect image. He needed everyone to believe he was successful, respected, untouchable.””

“And Lily threatened that?””

“She knew the truth.””

“What truth?””

Vanessa looked toward the bracelet.

“I think this bracelet is connected.””

I picked it up.

“How?””

“I don’t know.””

“You keep saying that.””

“Because Daniel hid everything.””

She stood and walked toward the kitchen drawer.

She pulled out a small flashlight.

“What are you doing?””

“Something I should have done years ago.””

She went back to the black box.

Then removed the bottom lining.

My eyes narrowed.

“There’s a hidden compartment?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I found it after Daniel disappeared.””

“Then why didn’t you open it?””

“I was afraid.””

She pressed a small latch.

A section of the box opened.

Inside was a folded piece of paper.

And a key.

I stared.

“What is that?””

Vanessa unfolded the paper.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She handed it to me.

It was a handwritten note.

Not from Daniel.

From Emily.

My heart stopped.

*Vanessa,*

*If you are reading this, then Daniel found out I know.*

I looked up.

Vanessa looked like she was about to cry.

I continued reading.

**You were right about him. He never loved Lily. He loved control.

But there is something worse. Something he did before he met either of us.**

My hands shook.

I kept reading.

*Richard cannot know until I am sure he is safe. If something happens to me, the evidence is not where Daniel thinks it is.*

I stopped.

My breathing became shallow.

Vanessa whispered:

“Keep going.””

I looked at the final lines.

*The key is for the place where everything began.*

Below that was an address.

I recognized it immediately.

My blood ran cold.

Because I had been there before.

The old house where Emily and I lived when Sophie was born.

The house we sold after Emily died.

The house that had supposedly been empty for years.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why would Emily hide something there?””

Vanessa’s face was pale.

“Because Daniel wouldn’t think you were involved.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means Emily trusted you.””

I looked at the key.

Then the address.

Then Sophie.

My daughter was watching us silently.

She looked scared.

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, did Daniel ever come inside our house?””

She looked down.

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

My entire body froze.

“When?””

“Sometimes.””

Vanessa gasped.

“Sometimes?””

Sophie nodded.

“He came when Vanessa was sleeping.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked horrified.

“Sophie, why didn’t you tell me?””

My daughter started crying.

“Because he said Daddy would get hurt.””

My heart shattered.

I pulled her into my arms.

“He said that?””

She nodded against my shoulder.

“He said grown-ups don’t tell the truth because they’re scared.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying now.

Not pretending.

Not defending herself.

Crying.

Because she knew.

She knew how deep this had gone.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Lily.

*Did you find Emily’s note?*

I stared at the screen.

How did she know?

Another message arrived.

*You need to go to the old house before Daniel does.*

Then:

*But don’t trust the key.*

My heart stopped.

I looked at the key sitting on the table.

A simple metal key.

Something Emily left behind.

Something meant to lead us to the truth.

But Lily had just warned me.

Don’t trust it.

A final message appeared.

*Because Daniel didn’t leave that key for you to find.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

She read the message.

Her face changed.

Slowly.

Terrified.

Then she whispered:

“Richard…”

“What?””

“That key…”

She stepped closer.

“That key was never in Emily’s possession.””

I stared at her.

“What are you saying?””

Vanessa looked at the key like it was something dangerous.

“I’m saying…”

Her voice broke.

“If Daniel planted it there…”

A silence.

“…then he knew we would find it.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went out.

In the darkness, Sophie screamed.

May you like

And from somewhere inside the house…

a door opened.
