Chapter 3: The Child Daniel Tried to Erase

The document trembled in my hands.

Not because it was old.

Not because the paper was fragile.

Because the name printed at the top had suddenly turned my entire understanding of my life upside down.

*Custody Agreement.*

The words stared back at me.

A legal document.

A record.

Proof that someone had existed.

Someone Vanessa had hidden.

Someone Daniel Cross had tried to erase.

I looked at Vanessa.

She sat across from me, her face pale, her hands wrapped tightly around a mug of untouched coffee.

For the first time since I met her, she looked like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy to hold.

But I didn’t know if that made me trust her.

Or fear her more.

“Who is this child?”” I asked.

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Her eyes moved toward the stairs.

Toward Sophie’s bedroom.

That small movement made my chest tighten.

Because somehow, everything kept coming back to my daughter.

“Vanessa.””

She looked back at me.

“Her name is Lily.””

I waited.

“That’s it?””

She swallowed.

“Lily Cross.””

The kitchen went silent.

I looked down at the document again.

A child.

Daniel’s child.

A daughter nobody knew existed.

A daughter born before he disappeared.

But there was something else.

Something that bothered me.

“Why did you hide this from me?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Because I knew you would ask questions.””

“I’m asking them now.””

Her eyes filled with frustration.

“Richard, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She stood suddenly and walked toward the window.

Rain had started falling outside.

Small drops tapping against the glass.

“I met Daniel when I was younger,” she said quietly.

I stayed silent.

“He wasn’t the man people thought he was.””

I almost interrupted.

But I stopped.

Because I needed to hear everything.

“He was charming,” she continued.

“That was the first thing everyone noticed. He remembered names. He made people feel important. He could walk into a room and make everyone believe he cared about them.””

She laughed softly.

But there was no happiness in it.

“That was how he controlled people.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The smiling man beside her.

The man everyone trusted.

“What happened?””

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Daniel had a daughter with his first wife.””

“Lily?””

She nodded.

“But after his first wife died, he changed.””

“How?””

“He became obsessed with control.””

She turned around.

“Everything had to belong to him. His money. His reputation. His family.””

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“And Lily?””

Vanessa’s expression darkened.

“He stopped treating her like a daughter.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

“It means she became a problem he needed to manage.””

I stared at her.

“A child?””

“Yes.””

The anger in her voice surprised me.

“He didn’t see children as people, Richard. He saw them as things that could either make him look good or make him look bad.””

I thought about Sophie crying at the sink.

Daddy… she hurts me every day.

My stomach twisted.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because you found the box.””

“That’s not enough.””

She lowered her eyes.

“Because Lily is connected to Sophie.””

The room seemed to stop.

“What?””

Vanessa didn’t speak.

“Explain that.””

She sat back down slowly.

“Daniel didn’t disappear by accident.””

I felt a chill.

“What are you saying?””

“He ran.””

“From what?””

“From everyone.””

She looked at the document.

“From his debts. From his mistakes. From the people who were trying to expose him.””

I stared at her.

“And you?””

Her face tightened.

“I was one of those people.””

The answer shocked me.

“You were investigating him?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I was helping him.””

That hurt more.

A lot more.

“Helping him?””

“At first.””

She looked down.

“I didn’t know who he really was.””

I wanted to believe that.

I wanted to.

But there were too many pieces that didn’t fit.

“You told me your first husband died.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“I know.””

“You let me believe that.””

“I was scared.””

“Scared enough to lie?””

“Yes.””

Her honesty caught me off guard.

She wasn’t defending herself.

She was admitting it.

“I should have told you everything before we got married,” she whispered.

“Yes.””

“I know.””

The simple acceptance made my anger shift.

Not disappear.

Just change.

Because there was something worse than being lied to.

Realizing the person lying might have been afraid.

But fear didn’t excuse everything.

Especially when Sophie was involved.

“What does Lily have to do with my daughter?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was when I knew.

There was something she still wasn’t saying.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“Tell me.””

Her lips parted.

Then closed.

Finally, she whispered:

“Lily was the reason Daniel disappeared.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“He blamed her.””

My blood ran cold.

“She was a child.””

“I know.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“Because Daniel had a secret.””

“What secret?””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“He wasn’t just hiding from the police or business partners.””

A pause.

“He was hiding from his own family.””

I stared at her.

“What family?””

Vanessa looked directly into my eyes.

“The family he had before anyone knew about Lily.””

I felt confused.

“Before?””

She nodded.

“Daniel had another life.””

The rain outside became louder.

I looked at the document again.

The custody agreement.

The child.

The impossible date.

“What does any of this have to do with Sophie?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Because Sophie’s mother knew.””

Everything inside me froze.

My daughter’s mother.

The woman I lost three years ago.

Emily.

The woman Vanessa had never met.

Or at least, that was what she told me.

“You knew Emily?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was answer enough.

My voice became quieter.

“You knew my wife?””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The room felt like it was spinning.

“When?””

“Before she died.””

I stood up.

“You’re telling me my late wife knew you?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“I couldn’t.””

“Why?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because Emily found out what Daniel did.””

“What did he do?””

She looked terrified.

“Something that involved Sophie.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know all of it.””

“You don’t know?””

“I know pieces.””

“Then tell me the pieces.””

Vanessa stood.

“He was looking for something.””

“What?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

She wiped her face.

“Richard, Daniel was obsessed with finding something Emily had.””

I felt a chill.

“My wife?””

“Yes.””

“What did Emily have?””

Vanessa looked toward the black box.

Then whispered:

“Evidence.””

The word hung in the air.

Evidence.

Against Daniel.

I walked closer.

“Evidence of what?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Instead, she walked to the box and pulled out another envelope.

This one was sealed.

My name was written across the front.

My hands went cold.

“Why is my name on that?””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“Because Emily left it for you.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Where did you get this?””

“She gave it to me.””

“When?””

“The week before she died.””

I couldn’t breathe.

My wife.

The woman who died suddenly.

The woman I had spent years mourning.

She had left something behind.

Something Vanessa knew about.

Something Vanessa hid.

“You had this the whole time?””

“Yes.””

The anger came back.

Stronger.

“You had something from Emily for years and never gave it to me?””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“You don’t get to decide that.””

“I know.””

Her voice cracked.

“I know I made mistakes.””

I looked at the envelope.

Then at Vanessa.

“Why now?””

She didn’t respond.

Because suddenly, my phone rang.

The sound cut through the kitchen.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered immediately.

“Who is this?””

At first, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

A voice I didn’t recognize.

“Richard?””

“Yes.””

“You found Vanessa’s box.””

My grip tightened.

“Who are you?””

The woman took a shaky breath.

“My name is Lily.””

I froze.

Vanessa’s face changed.

She heard the name.

She stood completely still.

The voice continued:

“I know you don’t know me.””

A pause.

“But I know your daughter.””

I felt my heart pound.

“How?””

Another pause.

Then Lily whispered:

“Because I was there the night Sophie’s mother discovered what Daniel was hiding.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked like she had seen a ghost.

And then Lily said the words that made me drop the phone slightly.

“Richard… your wife didn’t die because of an accident.””

The line went silent.

May you like

And before I could ask another question, Lily added:

“She was trying to save Sophie.””
