Chapter 12: The Year That Disappeared

The medical report felt heavier than it should have.

It was only paper.

A few printed pages.

Ink.

A name.

A date.

But in my hands, it felt like someone had handed me a missing piece of my own life.

My name was written across the top.

*Richard Hale.*

I stared at it.

Unable to look away.

Unable to understand.

“What is this?””

Nobody answered.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

Not Lily.

Not even Emily.

That scared me more than anything.

Because these people had spent years hiding things from me.

But now…

they were all afraid of the same truth.

I looked at Emily.

“You said I lost a year.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“How?””

She stepped forward.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

“Do you know how many times I’ve heard that tonight?””

She flinched.

I looked down at the report again.

“What happened to me?””

Emily swallowed.

“You were hurt.””

“When?””

“Before we met.””

I looked up.

“What?””

Lily opened the folder wider.

“The person you were before Emily isn’t exactly the person standing here now.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“You were involved with Daniel before you knew me.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

“No.””

Daniel didn’t look surprised.

That scared me.

“You knew?””

He nodded slightly.

“I did.””

I felt anger rise.

“You knew me?””

“Yes.””

“And you never told me?””

“No.””

I stepped toward him.

“Why?””

Daniel’s face changed.

For a moment, he looked almost ashamed.

“Because you asked me not to.””

I froze.

“What?””

Daniel looked at Emily.

Then back at me.

“Before everything happened, you found out what I was doing.””

My mind rejected the words.

“I don’t understand.””

“You were investigating me.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

But a strange feeling moved through me.

A memory.

Not complete.

Not clear.

A flash.

A dark office.

A stack of papers.

A man’s voice.

Daniel.

I closed my eyes.

And suddenly…

a headache exploded through my mind.

I grabbed the table.

“Richard?””

Emily reached for me.

I stepped back.

A memory.

A real one.

I saw myself standing in an office.

I saw Daniel across from me.

Angry.

“You don’t know what you’re involving yourself in.””

My own voice answered.

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

Another flash.

A hospital room.

Someone crying.

Emily.

Holding my hand.

“I’m sorry.””

My eyes opened.

Everyone was watching me.

“What happened?””

Emily’s voice was soft.

“You remembered.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I touched my forehead.

“I saw something.””

Lily looked at Daniel.

“You told him everything once.””

Daniel looked away.

“Yes.””

“And then you erased it.””

My head snapped toward her.

“What?””

Daniel immediately said:

“That’s not what happened.””

“Then explain.””

Nobody moved.

Finally, Emily spoke.

“Richard, you were going to expose Daniel.””

I stared.

“I was?””

“Yes.””

“Why don’t I remember?””

Her eyes lowered.

“Because Daniel made sure you wouldn’t.””

I looked at Daniel.

The anger inside me became something colder.

“What did you do?””

He didn’t answer.

“What did you do to me?””

Daniel finally spoke.

“I didn’t want to hurt you.””

“That wasn’t the question.””

He looked exhausted.

“I gave you a choice.””

“A choice?””

“Yes.””

He looked at Emily.

“She was there.””

Emily nodded sadly.

“I was.””

My voice became quieter.

“What choice?””

Daniel looked at me.

“You wanted to go public.””

“And?””

“And I told you what would happen.””

I frowned.

“What would happen?””

“You would lose everything.””

I laughed.

“That’s your excuse?””

“No.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I told you people would come after you.””

“Who?””

“The people behind me.””

The room went still.

“There were others?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

I stared.

“You weren’t the only one?””

“No.””

For the first time, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

“I was only one piece.””

Lily stepped forward.

“And that’s why he disappeared.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Lily.””

“No.””

Her voice was firm.

“You don’t get to use my name like you’re my father.””

The words hit him.

Hard.

She continued:

“You abandoned me.””

Daniel looked down.

“I was trying to protect you.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You always say that.””

The same words.

The same excuse.

Protect.

Everyone had used it.

Lily opened another document.

“This is the original investigation.””

She handed it to me.

I read the first page.

Then the second.

My hands started shaking.

Because my name was everywhere.

Not as a victim.

As an investigator.

I had been working with Emily.

I had been helping uncover Daniel’s crimes.

I had known.

I had known everything.

But why couldn’t I remember?

I looked at Emily.

“What happened after this?””

She looked devastated.

“You were attacked.””

My breathing stopped.

“When?””

“The night before we were supposed to expose Daniel.””

“Who attacked me?””

Emily looked at Daniel.

Daniel looked away.

That was answer enough.

“Daniel.””

He finally looked at me.

“I didn’t order it.””

“But you knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you let it happen.””

His silence was worse than any confession.

I stepped away.

The man who had haunted my family.

The man who had manipulated everyone.

He had also been part of the reason I lost myself.

But there was still one question.

“Why did Emily disappear?””

Emily looked down.

“Because after the attack, you were in danger.””

“So you left me?””

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I almost smiled.

Again.

That word.

Protecting.

“I woke up and my wife was dead.””

Tears ran down her face.

“I know.””

“I raised our daughter alone.””

“I know.””

“I buried you.””

Her voice broke.

“I know.””

The pain in her face was real.

But it didn’t erase mine.

“I spent years believing I failed you.””

Emily stepped closer.

“You didn’t.””

“Then why didn’t you come back?””

She looked at Sophie.

And that answer hurt more than anything.

“Because Daniel knew where you were.””

I looked at my daughter.

“What?””

“He knew if I returned, he would use Sophie to find me.””

A chill moved through me.

“So you stayed away to protect her.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Sophie.

The little girl who had been caught in a war before she could even understand it.

Then Lily spoke.

“There’s something else.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pulled out another paper.

“This is why Daniel came back.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She handed it to me.

It was a custody document.

But this time, the name wasn’t Lily.

It wasn’t Sophie.

It was mine.

My heart stopped.

“What is this?””

Lily looked at Emily.

“She found out before you did.””

Emily whispered:

“The accident wasn’t random.””

I stared.

“What accident?””

“The one that took your memories.””

The room went silent.

I felt cold.

“You mean…”

Emily nodded.

“Someone caused it.””

My eyes moved toward Daniel.

But he shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Nobody answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You finally remembered.*

Then a second message.

A photograph.

My blood turned cold.

Because the picture showed a hospital room.

Me.

Unconscious.

Emily sitting beside me.

And standing behind her…

was Vanessa.

The final message appeared.

*Ask your wife why she was there when you lost your memory.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked like she had been caught in the one lie she never wanted exposed.

And quietly…

she whispered:

“Richard…”

“I wasn’t your wife yet.””

The room went silent.

Because suddenly, the biggest mystery wasn’t Daniel.

It was Vanessa.

May you like

And why she had been beside me…

before Emily ever disappeared.
