Chapter 10: The Woman In The Fire

The photograph fell from the stranger’s hand and landed on the dusty floor.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was staring at the same image.

The burning house.

The orange glow of flames reflected against the night sky.

A figure standing outside the property.

Daniel.

And beside him…

Vanessa.

My eyes moved slowly toward my wife.

No.

Not my wife.

I didn’t even know what to call her anymore.

The woman who had shared my home.

The woman who had helped raise my daughter.

The woman who had hidden the truth from me for years.

She looked at the photograph.

And all the color drained from her face.

“Where did you get that?”” Vanessa whispered.

The stranger didn’t answer.

He looked at Emily.

“Tell him.””

Emily closed her eyes.

I felt my chest tighten.

Everyone knew something except me.

Again.

“Tell me what?”” I asked.

My voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Emily looked at me.

“Richard…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not this time.””

I pointed at the photograph.

“I want the truth before someone else reveals another piece of my life that everyone decided I wasn’t allowed to know.””

The stranger lowered his head.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Mark Bennett.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But Daniel reacted.

His face changed.

“You.””

Mark looked at him.

“Yes.””

Daniel stepped back.

“You were supposed to be gone.””

Mark gave a bitter smile.

“So were you.””

The tension in the room changed.

This wasn’t a meeting between strangers.

This was a reunion between people who had been running from the same nightmare.

“Explain,” I said.

Nobody answered.

I raised my voice.

“Explain!””

Sophie jumped slightly.

I immediately lowered myself beside her.

“Sorry, sweetheart.””

She looked up at me.

“Daddy, are they fighting?””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“No.””

But I knew I was lying.

Everyone in that room was fighting.

With each other.

With the past.

With the truth.

Mark looked at Sophie.

His expression softened.

“She’s the reason none of this ended.””

I stood.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at Emily.

“You never told him?””

Emily shook her head.

“I was going to.””

“When?””

Her silence answered.

Mark looked away.

“Five years later?””

I felt anger rise.

“Enough.””

Everyone turned toward me.

“I don’t care who lied first. I don’t care who thought they were protecting me.””

I looked at Emily.

“At the end of the day, I was raising our daughter while everyone around me knew pieces of the truth.””

Emily looked down.

I saw pain on her face.

But I couldn’t let that distract me.

Not anymore.

I turned to Mark.

“Start from the beginning.””

He nodded.

“The fire happened because Daniel was exposed.””

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“That’s not true.””

Mark looked at him.

“You always did that.””

“Did what?””

“Changed the story before anyone finished telling it.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

Mark continued.

“The night of the fire, Emily found documents.””

“What documents?””

“Records.””

He looked at me.

“Records showing Daniel had been using children’s identities to hide illegal transactions.””

My stomach tightened.

“The children you mentioned.””

Mark nodded.

“Lily was one of them.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Daniel used Lily’s information because he thought nobody would question a child’s accounts.””

Daniel’s voice became cold.

“You have no proof.””

Emily looked at him.

“I have enough.””

“Where?””

Her eyes moved toward Sophie.

My heart dropped.

“What?””

Emily took a breath.

“Sophie had it.””

I stared.

“My daughter?””

Emily nodded.

“She didn’t understand what she had.””

Daniel looked at Sophie.

And for the first time, I saw something terrifying.

Not anger.

Fear.

“She was too young.””

I stepped in front of Sophie.

“Don’t look at her.””

Daniel looked away.

Emily continued.

“The night of the fire, I went to Daniel’s house because I knew he was planning to destroy the evidence.””

“And Vanessa was there.””

Everyone looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

“Yes.””

The word was barely audible.

My heart sank.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I went there to stop him.””

“But the picture shows you there.””

“Yes.””

“Near the fire.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“Because I started it.””

The room went silent.

Sophie grabbed my hand.

I felt frozen.

Vanessa had finally admitted it.

The thing everyone was avoiding.

“You started the fire?””

She nodded.

“But not for the reason you think.””

I stared at her.

“Then tell me the reason.””

Vanessa looked at Emily.

Emily nodded.

“Tell him.””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“I found Daniel’s records.””

“About the children?””

“Yes.””

“And?””

“And I found Lily.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa’s voice broke.

“It means I found out Daniel had been keeping her hidden.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“At that house.””

The burned house.

“She wasn’t missing.””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

“He locked her there.””

A silence followed.

Even Daniel didn’t deny it.

My anger turned toward him.

“You locked your own daughter away?””

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I was trying to protect her.””

The words were disgusting.

Protect her.

Another excuse.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Daniel looked at her.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“I understand exactly.””

For the first time, Vanessa wasn’t afraid.

She stepped closer to Daniel.

“You made everyone around you feel guilty for seeing the truth.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You think you’re innocent?””

Vanessa froze.

A strange silence passed.

I noticed.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel smiled.

And suddenly, I understood.

There was still another secret.

“Vanessa.””

She looked away.

“Richard…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Please don’t tell me there’s more.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“There’s always more with Daniel.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Ask her why she married you.””

The room went still.

I stared at Vanessa.

“What?””

She looked horrified.

“Don’t listen to him.””

“Why did you marry me?””

“Richard…”

“Why?””

Vanessa couldn’t answer.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

Emily looked at her sadly.

“Vanessa…”

Vanessa whispered:

“I didn’t plan to fall in love with you.””

My heart hurt.

“What does that mean?””

She wiped her tears.

“When I first met you, I was trying to find Daniel.””

The words hit me.

“You used me?””

“No.””

She shook her head quickly.

“No, Richard. That wasn’t what happened.””

“Then what happened?””

“I thought you knew where he was.””

I stared.

“Why would I know?””

“Because Emily trusted you with something.””

I looked at Emily.

She looked away.

“What?””

Emily whispered:

“I left something with you.””

I frowned.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“Yes, you do.””

“No.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Richard…”

Her voice softened.

“The day before I disappeared, I gave you something.””

I searched my memory.

Nothing.

“I don’t remember.””

Emily’s face fell.

“Because Daniel made sure you wouldn’t.””

My blood ran cold.

“What?””

Mark stepped forward.

“He drugged you.””

The room went silent.

“What?””

Mark looked at me.

“The night Emily vanished, Daniel was there.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You were there?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Mark continued.

“He didn’t kill Emily.””

Everyone froze.

“What?””

“He couldn’t.””

Mark looked at Emily.

“Because she escaped.””

My head spun.

“Then why did everyone think she died?””

Emily whispered:

“Because someone else needed me to disappear.””

I looked around the room.

At Daniel.

At Vanessa.

At Mark.

At Emily.

Then at Sophie.

A child who had been carrying the weight of adult secrets.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You are looking at the wrong villain.*

Then another message appeared.

A photograph.

My blood turned cold.

Because it was a picture taken moments earlier.

Inside this room.

Everyone was visible.

Emily.

Daniel.

Vanessa.

Mark.

Me.

Sophie.

And behind us…

a shadow.

Someone standing in the doorway.

Someone who had been listening.

The final message appeared.

*The fire was never started by Vanessa.*

I looked toward the doorway.

Nobody was there.

Then I saw the name attached to the message.

May you like

A name that made Emily’s face go completely pale.

*Lily Cross.*
