Chapter 5: The Man Outside the Window
I couldn’t hear anything except my own heartbeat.
Not the rain.
Not the wind.
Not Vanessa breathing behind me.
Nothing.
Because my four-year-old daughter had just looked me in the eyes and said the one thing I never wanted to hear.
*He came here.*
I held the photograph in my hand.
The image was slightly faded, the edges bent from years of being hidden somewhere.
But there was no mistake.
The man standing outside our house was Daniel Cross.
The same man Vanessa claimed was dead.
The same man whose name had appeared in every secret we uncovered.
The same man who, according to Lily, had been watching my family.
I looked at Sophie.
“Sweetheart…”
My voice came out softer than I expected.
“When did he come here?””
Sophie hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter.
“Last night.””
The room tilted.
“Last night?””
She nodded.
I looked at Vanessa.
Her face had gone completely pale.
“You knew?””
She shook her head immediately.
“No.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not!””
Her voice cracked.
“I swear, Richard, I didn’t know he was here.””
I looked back at Sophie.
“Can you tell Daddy what happened?””
She glanced at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“He was outside.””
“Outside where?””
“Near the window.””
My eyes moved toward the glass.
The same window beside Sophie’s bed.
The window I had never thought twice about.
The window where my daughter slept every night.
“What did he do?””
Sophie lowered her voice.
“He just watched.””
A cold feeling moved through my entire body.
“Did he come inside?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Did he talk to you?””
A pause.
Then she nodded.
“One time.””
Vanessa gasped.
I turned.
“You knew about this?””
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know.””
I ignored her.
“What did he say, Sophie?””
My daughter looked frightened.
Like she was trying to decide whether telling me would make things worse.
I reached for her hand.
“You can tell Daddy anything.””
She whispered:
“He said I look just like my mommy.””
I froze.
Emily.
My wife.
Sophie’s mother.
A woman Daniel had never met.
At least, that was what I believed.
“What else?””
Sophie looked down.
“He said my mommy promised she would never tell.””
My breathing stopped.
Never tell.
Tell what?
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like she was about to collapse.
“Richard…”
“No.””
I stood up.
“You’re going to answer me.””
“I don’t know what he meant.””
“You know enough.””
She wiped her face.
“I know Emily was close to finding the truth.””
“What truth?””
Vanessa looked at Sophie.
Then back at me.
“I think Daniel was afraid Emily would expose him.””
“Expose him for what?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice trembled.
“I don’t know.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because I’m telling the truth.””
“Then why is my daughter holding a picture of a man who should be dead?””
No answer.
Because there wasn’t one.
I picked up Sophie.
“We’re leaving.””
Vanessa looked shocked.
“Richard.””
“We’re going to a hotel.””
“Please don’t.””
I stopped.
“Why?””
“Because if Daniel knows where you live…”
She swallowed.
“He already knows.””
That sentence made the room feel colder.
I carried Sophie downstairs.
Vanessa followed.
For once, she wasn’t arguing.
She wasn’t defending herself.
She was scared.
Real fear.
The kind that couldn’t be faked.
At the bottom of the stairs, I grabbed my keys.
Then I stopped.
Something felt wrong.
Too easy.
Someone had been inside our house.
Someone had been near my daughter.
And we were just walking out.
Leaving everything behind.
I looked around.
The living room.
The hallway.
The photographs on the walls.
Then I saw it.
A small white envelope sitting on the table.
I knew immediately it hadn’t been there before.
“Did you put this here?””
I asked Vanessa.
She looked confused.
“No.””
I walked toward it.
“Richard…”
I ignored her warning.
The envelope had no name.
No address.
Just one sentence written across the front.
*For the father who never knew.*
My stomach tightened.
I opened it.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Four words were written.
*Ask about the fire.*
I stared at it.
“What fire?””
Vanessa went completely still.
“What?””
I looked at her.
“You know.””
“No.””
But her face said yes.
I stepped closer.
“What fire?””
She shook her head.
“Richard, I need to explain something.””
“You’ve been saying that all night.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“The night Daniel disappeared…”
She stopped.
“Go on.””
“There was a fire.””
My grip tightened around the paper.
“Where?””
“At a property he owned.””
“What property?””
She looked at the floor.
“A house.””
I waited.
“And?””
Her voice became smaller.
“That’s where Lily was last seen.””
The silence afterward felt unbearable.
I looked at Sophie.
She was listening.
Too young to understand.
Old enough to feel fear.
“Was Lily hurt?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
“We don’t know.””
“You don’t know?””
“No one knows.””
I stared at her.
“You’re telling me a child disappeared after a fire involving a man who was supposed to be dead, and nobody knows what happened?””
Vanessa nodded.
“That’s why Daniel is dangerous.””
I looked at the letter again.
Ask about the fire.
Who sent it?
Lily?
Someone else?
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
“Who is this?””
A man’s voice responded.
Not Lily.
A man.
Older.
Calm.
“Richard Hale.””
My blood went cold.
“How do you know my name?””
A quiet laugh.
“Because I’ve known about you for a long time.””
I stepped away from Sophie.
“Who are you?””
“You need to stop looking for answers.””
My jaw tightened.
“Are you Daniel?””
Silence.
Then:
“You should ask your wife what happened the night Emily died.””
My heart stopped.
“What did you say?””
The man continued.
“Your wife wasn’t the only person hiding something.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“You don’t know who you married, Richard.””
The call ended.
I stood there frozen.
Vanessa whispered:
“Was it him?””
I didn’t answer.
Because I didn’t know.
But one thing was clear.
Someone wanted me afraid.
Someone wanted me to stop searching.
And they had just made one mistake.
They mentioned Emily.
That meant they knew exactly where to hurt me.
I turned to Vanessa.
“Tell me about the night Emily died.””
Her face changed.
“Richard…”
“Now.””
She looked at Sophie.
Then closed her eyes.
“I wasn’t there.””
“I know.””
“But I know who was.””
I waited.
Her voice barely came out.
“Daniel.””
The room went silent.
I felt anger rise.
“You’re telling me Daniel Cross was near my wife the night she died?””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell me?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
But she didn’t argue.
Because maybe she knew I was right.
I grabbed my coat.
“We’re leaving.””
This time, she didn’t stop me.
But as I opened the front door, something caught my attention.
A shadow.
Across the street.
Standing under the rain.
Watching our house.
Watching us.
My body went still.
“Richard?””
I stepped outside slightly.
The streetlight flickered.
The figure didn’t move.
I couldn’t see his face.
But I knew.
Somehow, I knew.
Daniel Cross was standing there.
And then my phone buzzed.
A message.
From the same unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
*You finally looked outside.*
I looked up.
The figure was gone.
But on the wet pavement where he had been standing…
was a small object.
A child’s bracelet.
Pink.
May you like
With a name engraved on it.
*Sophie.*
