Chapter 1: Mommy Is Under the Pool
“Daddy! Mommy is under the pool!””
The little girl's scream shattered the romantic evening.
Marcus Hale was on one knee, wearing a navy-blue suit over a crisp white shirt. In his left hand, an open red velvet ring box caught the golden light of the garden lanterns.
Standing before him was Vanessa Reed, a beautiful woman in an elegant cream-colored dress.
For months, Marcus had imagined this moment.
The private garden. The flowers. The soft music. The woman he believed would become his wife.
Then his six-year-old daughter came running across the patio.
Her pink dress fluttered around her knees. Her little shoes slapped against the stone tiles as she hurried toward him, one hand pointing desperately at the swimming pool.
Marcus turned.
“Lily? Sweetheart, what's wrong?””
The girl reached him, touching his shoulder.
“Daddy, Mommy is under the pool.””
For a moment, Marcus didn't understand.
He carefully placed the ring box on a low garden chair and reached behind Lily to steady her.
“What did you say?””
“Mommy is under the pool!””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Lily, honey, that's enough. You're upsetting your father.””
But Lily grabbed Marcus's jacket sleeve.
Her small fingers tightened around the expensive fabric.
“She's alive. I saw her down there.””
Marcus felt the blood drain from his face.
His wife, Eleanor, had been dead for eleven months.
At least, that was what everyone had told him.
He remembered the funeral. The closed coffin. The official documents. The endless condolences from friends and relatives.
He remembered holding Lily while she cried into his shoulder.
And now his daughter was telling him her mother was alive.
“Where?”” Marcus demanded.
Lily pointed toward the far end of the swimming pool.
“There. Under the water.””
Marcus started moving.
But before he could take another step, Vanessa grabbed his right forearm with both hands.
“Marcus, wait!””
She pulled sharply toward herself.
His shoulder jerked sideways, twisting his body away from the pool.
He stopped.
Lily startled at the sudden movement but remained beside him, holding onto his left sleeve.
Vanessa stepped directly into his line of sight.
“Listen to me,” she said urgently.
“She's confused.””
Marcus stared at her.
Behind Vanessa, the swimming pool reflected the garden lights. Its surface looked perfectly calm.
But Lily was shaking.
“Daddy, please. I saw her.””
“Lily, sweetheart, stay right here.””
Vanessa tightened her grip.
Marcus looked down at her hands.
Then he slowly raised his eyes.
“What are you HIDING from me?””
Vanessa's expression changed.
Only for a second.
Her eyes darted toward the water before returning to his face.
“Nothing. I'm trying to protect you.””
“Then move.””
“Marcus, you don't understand.””
“Move.””
He guided Lily toward the dry ground beside the garden chair, making sure she was standing safely before straightening up.
Vanessa still held his arm.
“Marcus, don't go down there.””
He looked at her fingers wrapped around his sleeve.
Then he looked at her face.
“Let go.””
“Please, just listen—”
“LET GO!””
He pulled his forearm sharply against his chest.
Vanessa's fingers slipped one after another until both hands released him completely.
For a moment, she stood motionless.
Then she moved in front of him again.
“You're making a terrible mistake,” she whispered.
Marcus stepped diagonally around her.
He didn't answer.
Instead, he reached for his suit jacket and pulled it forcefully off his shoulders. He worked both arms free of the sleeves and threw it onto the dry stone beside the garden chair.
His white shirt remained buttoned.
“Daddy!”” Lily cried.
Marcus looked back.
“I'm coming, sweetheart.””
Then he ran.
His shoes struck the edge of the pool.
He took one final step and launched himself into the water.
A tremendous splash exploded beneath the garden lights.
Vanessa spun around, one hand still extended as if she had just lost her last opportunity to stop him.
Lily remained on the dry ground.
“Daddy!”” she screamed again.
Underwater, the world became a blur of bubbles and blue light.
Marcus kicked hard.
His white shirt clung to his chest as he opened his eyes and searched the bottom.
He had expected to find a person.
A hand.
A face.
Anything that could explain what Lily had seen.
Instead, something unusual caught his attention.
At the deepest end of the pool, beneath the shimmering reflections, lay a large circular metal cover.
It was darker than the surrounding tiles.
And it didn't look like part of the swimming pool.
Marcus changed direction.
He kicked toward it, pushing through the water with powerful strokes.
His heart hammered.
A memory suddenly returned.
Six months earlier, during renovations, he had asked the construction manager why one section of the pool floor sounded hollow.
The manager had laughed.
“Old drainage infrastructure, Mr. Hale. Nothing to worry about.””
Marcus had forgotten about it.
Until now.
He approached the circular structure.
It was much larger than an ordinary drain cover. Thick metal bolts surrounded its outer rim. A small rectangular handle sat near the center.
He stopped swimming.
The water was unusually dark around it.
Marcus stared.
Then he whispered, his voice muffled by the water.
“Oh my God. What's down here?””
He reached forward.
The metal surface was solid, heavy-looking, and completely sealed.
He stretched both arms toward it.
His fingers spread.

And just as his hands were about to make contact—
Everything went still.
