Chapter 1: The Wedding That Ended in Silence

The bride slapped both hands away from the woman who had spent thirty years dreaming of welcoming her into the family.

“DON’T hug me. You smell DISGUSTING.””

The words cut through the wedding reception like broken glass.

Marcus's mother, Evelyn, stood in the middle of the grand ballroom wearing a beautiful navy-blue dress. Her platinum hair was carefully styled, and a small pearl necklace rested against her collarbone.

She had been smiling just seconds earlier.

Her arms had opened naturally as she approached her new daughter-in-law, ready to offer the embrace she had imagined since Marcus first told her he was in love.

But the moment Evelyn's hands touched the outside of the bride's arms, Vanessa violently knocked them down and pulled herself away.

Evelyn stumbled backward.

For a moment, her arms remained suspended in the air.

Then they slowly dropped.

At the nearest table, a guest froze with a champagne glass halfway to his mouth. Another woman turned so quickly that her chair scraped against the polished floor.

The wedding photographer lowered his camera.

Vanessa looked Evelyn up and down, her nose wrinkling.

“What's wrong with you?”” Vanessa demanded.

Evelyn swallowed.

“I only wanted to welcome you to the family.””

“Then keep your distance.””

Vanessa raised one hand between them, stopping Evelyn from saying anything else.

The older woman went still.

Her eyes glistened, but she refused to let the tears fall. She folded both hands in front of her stomach and tried to maintain the polite expression she had worn all afternoon.

Marcus had been speaking with two of his college friends near the entrance when he heard the commotion.

He turned.

He saw his mother standing alone.

He saw Vanessa's raised hand.

And he saw the expressions on the faces of the guests who had just witnessed everything.

He walked straight toward them.

“Mom?””

Evelyn immediately tried to smile.

“It's all right, sweetheart.””

But Marcus wasn't looking at her anymore.

He stopped beside his mother, positioning himself slightly in front of her.

Then he looked directly at Vanessa.

“You just humiliated my mother in front of everyone.””

Vanessa's expression changed instantly.

“Marcus, she embarrassed me.””

She pointed accusingly toward Evelyn.

Marcus glanced at the finger she was directing at his mother.

Then he looked back at Vanessa.

“What did she do?””

Vanessa let out an irritated breath.

“Don't start. I have told you a hundred times that I don't like people touching me without permission.””

“She was welcoming you.””

“And I didn't want her touching me!””

Her voice rose.

Several guests shifted uncomfortably.

Marcus said nothing.

Instead, he reached for Vanessa's left hand.

She allowed him to take it, apparently believing he was about to calm her down.

His left hand held hers steady.

His right hand moved toward the wedding ring on her fourth finger.

Vanessa looked down.

At first, she seemed confused.

Then she felt the ring beginning to move.

“Marcus, what are you doing?””

He continued sliding it over her knuckle.

The diamond caught the ballroom lights as it came free.

For a second, Vanessa simply stared at her empty finger.

Marcus released her hand.

The ring rested in his right palm.

He raised it to chest level and looked at her.

“Choosing the woman who respected me my whole life.””

Vanessa's mouth opened.

The arrogance that had been sitting comfortably on her face disappeared.

“What?””

Marcus lowered his hand.

He turned toward Evelyn.

His mother looked at him with disbelief, her lips trembling.

He took one step in her direction.

Vanessa immediately followed.

She grabbed his left forearm, trying to pull his attention back toward her.

“You're ending our marriage over her?””

Her voice cracked, but her accusation remained unmistakable.

She emphasized the last two words, as though Evelyn were the problem standing between them.

Marcus stopped.

He gently pulled his arm free.

Then he turned and looked directly into Vanessa's eyes.

“No. Over who you just showed me you really are.””

Vanessa stood frozen.

Her hand remained suspended where his arm had been.

May you like

For the first time that afternoon, she had nothing to say.

And the wedding ring was no longer on her finger.
