Chapter 8: The Inheritance Nobody Was Supposed to Know About

Marcus drove to Evelyn's house immediately.

He found her sitting at the dining table, holding a cup of tea she hadn't touched.

Her face looked pale.

When he entered, she stood.

“Marcus.””

He hugged her.

“Tell me exactly what he said.””

Evelyn sat down again.

“Vanessa's father called around lunchtime. He said there was still time to fix everything.””

“What did he mean?””

“He said you were about to destroy a wonderful future because of a disagreement between women.””

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“And then?””

“He mentioned your father's inheritance.””

Marcus pulled out a chair.

“What exactly did he say?””

Evelyn closed her eyes, trying to remember.

“He said, 'Your son has a substantial inheritance waiting for him. It would be unfortunate if a family disagreement complicated the arrangements.''”

Marcus stared at her.

“Did he mention the amount?””

“No.””

“Did he ask you to convince me to sign anything?””

“He wanted me to tell you that Vanessa deserves security.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Security?””

Evelyn reached across the table.

“Your father worked very hard for what he left you. I don't want anyone taking advantage of you.””

Marcus looked toward the living room.

His father's old photograph stood on the mantelpiece.

It showed a younger Evelyn holding Marcus as a toddler while his father stood beside them.

His father had been a careful man.

He had saved for years, purchased a small commercial property, and invested in several businesses before his death.

The inheritance had been placed in a trust.

Marcus couldn't access the principal until certain conditions were met.

He had mentioned the trust to Vanessa during their relationship, but he had never disclosed the exact value.

Only his mother, his father's attorney, and Marcus knew the full details.

“How does Richard Reed know about it?”” Marcus asked.

Evelyn looked troubled.

“Perhaps Vanessa told him.””

Marcus shook his head.

“She doesn't know the details.””

“Then someone else might.””

He took out his phone and called Daniel.

“I need you to investigate how Vanessa's father learned about my inheritance.””

Daniel agreed.

Then Marcus asked his mother another question.

“Mom, did you ever discuss Dad's trust with Vanessa?””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Never.””

Marcus nodded.

“Good.””

But something about the situation continued bothering him.

His father had been dead for almost twenty years.

The trust had been established shortly before his death, with a provision protecting the money from claims by future spouses unless Marcus voluntarily transferred assets.

It was designed to protect him.

Yet Vanessa seemed unusually interested in it.

That afternoon, Daniel called.

“I've reviewed the property documents.””

“What did you find?””

“The $35,000 transfer came from a business account connected to Reed Property Holdings. However, the mortgage application identifies the money as a contribution from you.””

Marcus frowned.

“But I didn't send it.””

“That's why we need to establish the source of the supporting documents.””

“Can we stop the application?””

“Yes. I've sent a formal dispute. The lender has suspended processing pending verification.””

Marcus exhaled.

“Thank you.””

Daniel paused.

“There's something else. Your fiancée's father has been contacting the property developer directly.””

“What for?””

“To negotiate the ownership structure.””

Marcus went quiet.

Daniel continued.

“He wants the apartment transferred into a company controlled by his family after completion.””

Marcus felt a chill run down his spine.

“So I take the mortgage, and his company owns the property?””

“That's what the draft documents appear to suggest.””

Marcus stared at the kitchen wall.

“Send everything to me.””

“I will. But Marcus, don't confront them without understanding the full picture.””

“I understand enough.””

That evening, Vanessa arrived at the apartment carrying two shopping bags.

She placed them on the sofa.

“Hi, darling.””

Marcus was sitting at the dining table with his laptop open.

“Where have you been?””

“Shopping with Mom.””

She pulled out a garment bag.

“I found the perfect dress for the rehearsal dinner.””

Marcus didn't respond.

Vanessa glanced at the laptop.

“Are you still dealing with that ridiculous paperwork?””

“I'm dealing with the apartment.””

She stopped.

“What about it?””

“I spoke to the lender.””

Her face changed.

“Why?””

“Because someone submitted a mortgage application using my information.””

Vanessa dropped the garment bag.

“Marcus, we discussed this.””

“No, you told me what you wanted me to believe.””

She crossed her arms.

“My father handled the deposit. I handled the paperwork. That's all.””

“Why does his company end up owning the apartment?””

Vanessa blinked.

“What?””

“Why is Reed Property Holdings listed as the intended owner?””

She looked toward the kitchen.

“That's just a temporary arrangement.””

“Temporary for whom?””

“Marcus, you don't understand how property investments work.””

“Then explain it.””

She threw her handbag onto the sofa.

“My father knows what he's doing. He has built several successful businesses.””

“And you?””

“What?””

“Did you know my name was being used as the primary borrower?””

She looked away.

“I thought you'd eventually agree.””

Marcus slowly closed his laptop.

“You thought I'd agree to a $480,000 mortgage after the documents were submitted?””

Vanessa raised her voice.

“Because we're getting married!””

He stood.

“Stop using the wedding as an excuse for everything.””

She stared at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Vanessa changed tactics.

She approached him, lowered her voice, and touched his arm.

“Marcus, please. I know I've made mistakes.””

He looked down at her hand.

“Which mistakes?””

“The paperwork. The seating arrangement. Everything.””

“Did you apologize to my mother?””

Vanessa withdrew her hand.

“Why are we bringing her into this again?””

“Because you humiliated her, excluded her, and then told her she wasn't welcome in the family.””

“I never said that.””

“You told her to stay home.””

Vanessa looked frustrated.

“Fine. I'm sorry she felt that way.””

Marcus stared at her.

“That isn't an apology.””

“Marcus, I am trying!””

“No. You're trying to save the wedding.””

She shook her head.

“What's wrong with that? We love each other.””

He looked at her for a long moment.

Then he asked quietly:

“Did you tell your father about my inheritance?””

Vanessa's face went completely blank.

“Why would you ask that?””

“Because he mentioned it to my mother.””

She swallowed.

“He probably heard about it from someone.””

“Who?””

“I don't know.””

Marcus took a step closer.

“Vanessa, who told him?””

She suddenly became angry.

“Why does it matter? It's your money, and we're going to be married!””

There it was.

Not concern.

Not confusion.

Entitlement.

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Thank you.””

She frowned.

“For what?””

“For finally saying what you believe.””

He picked up his jacket.

Vanessa moved toward the door.

“Where are you going?””

“To my mother's.””

“Marcus, the rehearsal dinner is tomorrow!””

He opened the door.

“Then perhaps you should rehearse explaining everything.””

He left.

The next morning, Daniel called with an update.

“Marcus, we found something important.””

“What?””

“The inheritance trust has been contacted.””

Marcus sat upright.

“By whom?””

“An inquiry was submitted three months ago requesting information about the trust's distribution rules and whether a future spouse could become a beneficiary.””

His fingers tightened around the phone.

“Who submitted it?””

Daniel paused.

“The inquiry was made through a financial consultancy.””

“Whose consultancy?””

“Reed Advisory Group.””

Marcus stared at the wall.

Daniel continued.

“And there's another detail. The person who signed the inquiry was not Richard Reed.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Who was it?””

May you like

Daniel read the name from the document.

“Vanessa Reed.””
