Chapter 9: The Rehearsal Dinner

Marcus didn't attend the rehearsal dinner to celebrate.

He attended because he wanted to hear the truth without another excuse.

The event was being held in a private dining room at the estate.

Crystal glasses reflected the candlelight. White roses decorated the tables. A string quartet played softly near the entrance.

Vanessa had arranged everything.

She wore a champagne-colored dress and greeted guests with the smile of a woman who believed nothing could go wrong.

When Marcus entered, she hurried toward him.

“Finally.””

He looked at her.

“Hello, Vanessa.””

She lowered her voice.

“Please don't start anything tonight.””

“I'm not planning to.””

“Good. My parents are already stressed.””

Marcus glanced across the room.

Richard Reed stood near the bar, talking to two businessmen.

He was in his early sixties, with silver hair, an expensive watch, and the relaxed confidence of someone accustomed to being obeyed.

When he noticed Marcus, he raised his glass.

“Marcus! There he is.””

He approached with a broad smile.

“Tomorrow is the big day.””

Marcus shook his hand.

“Apparently.””

Richard laughed.

“Still nervous?””

“Not about the ceremony.””

Richard's smile weakened.

Vanessa quickly stepped between them.

“Dad, everything is fine.””

Richard looked at his daughter.

“Good. That's what I like to hear.””

Then he leaned toward Marcus.

“Let's put the business matters aside tonight. Families should celebrate together.””

Marcus met his eyes.

“Families should be honest with each other.””

Richard's expression became more controlled.

“Absolutely.””

They took their seats.

Dinner began.

For the first twenty minutes, the conversation remained polite.

Vanessa's mother, Patricia, discussed the flowers. One of the bridesmaids praised the venue. Richard told a story about a business trip to London.

Marcus barely touched his food.

Across the table, Evelyn sat quietly in her navy dress.

Vanessa had initially placed her at the far end of the table, but Marcus had moved his chair beside his mother before dinner began.

When he noticed Evelyn struggling to reach the water pitcher, he picked it up and poured her a glass.

“Thank you, sweetheart,” she whispered.

Vanessa watched them.

Then she leaned toward Marcus.

“Can you please stop making everything about your mother?””

Marcus put down the pitcher.

“I was pouring her water.””

“Everyone can see what you're doing.””

He looked at her.

“What am I doing?””

“Making a point.””

He turned back to his plate.

“Maybe the point is that she's my mother.””

Patricia heard the exchange.

“Marcus, dear, Vanessa has been under tremendous pressure.””

Evelyn looked up.

“I'm sure she has.””

Patricia smiled tightly.

“Weddings are difficult. Some mothers struggle when their sons start new lives.””

Marcus put down his fork.

“My mother isn't struggling.””

Richard cleared his throat.

“Let's not turn dinner into a discussion about family politics.””

Marcus nodded.

“Good idea. Let's discuss the apartment instead.””

The table went silent.

Vanessa's fork stopped halfway to her mouth.

Richard placed his glass down.

“What apartment?””

“The one you arranged using my financial information.””

Patricia looked at her husband.

Vanessa whispered, “Marcus.””

He continued.

“The one with the $480,000 purchase price, the mortgage application in my name, and the proposed ownership structure involving Reed Property Holdings.””

Richard leaned back.

“This is hardly the place.””

“Where would you prefer?””

“Tomorrow, after the wedding.””

Marcus looked directly at him.

“There won't be a wedding if this isn't explained.””

Vanessa stood so quickly that her chair scraped against the floor.

“Can we talk privately?””

“No.””

Her eyes widened.

“Marcus!””

He looked around the table.

“Everyone here deserves to know why my name was placed on financial documents I never approved.””

Richard's expression hardened.

“You're making accusations without understanding the arrangement.””

“Then explain it.””

Richard folded his hands.

“The apartment was intended as a marital investment. My daughter would live there, and you would contribute toward the mortgage.””

“And your company would own it?””

“Initially, yes.””

“Why?””

“To protect the asset.””

Marcus gave a short laugh.

“Protect it from whom?””

Richard's jaw tightened.

“Business structures are complicated.””

“Not complicated enough to explain why my name was used without my permission.””

Vanessa moved closer.

“Dad was only trying to help us.””

Marcus turned toward her.

“Did you know?””

She didn't answer.

“Vanessa, did you know?””

“Yes.””

The admission landed heavily.

Evelyn looked down at her hands.

Marcus nodded.

“Thank you.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“I was trying to secure our future.””

“By putting me in debt?””

“By building something together!””

“You didn't ask me.””

“You would have said no!””

The room went silent.

Marcus stared at her.

“Exactly.””

Richard stood.

“That's enough.””

But Marcus wasn't finished.

He reached into his jacket and removed a printed copy of the inquiry submitted to his father's trust.

He placed it on the table.

“Who wants to explain this?””

Richard looked at the document.

His expression changed.

Vanessa went pale.

Patricia leaned forward.

“What is that?””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Three months ago, someone contacted the administrators of my inheritance trust to ask whether a future spouse could become a beneficiary.””

Richard picked up the document.

“This is private financial information.””

“Yes. That's why I'm interested in knowing how your family obtained it.””

Vanessa began shaking her head.

“Marcus, please.””

He looked at her.

“Your name is on the inquiry.””

She closed her eyes.

“I was just asking questions.””

“Why?””

“Because we were getting married!””

“Were you planning to become a beneficiary of my father's trust?””

Vanessa looked toward her father.

Richard stepped in.

“My daughter was making sensible preparations for her future.””

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

“Her future?””

Richard's voice hardened.

“Look, Marcus. You're a successful man. My daughter is marrying into a family with considerable assets. We wanted to make sure she would be protected.””

Evelyn finally spoke.

“Protected from what?””

Richard looked at her.

“I'm sorry?””

Evelyn's voice remained calm.

“Protected from what, Mr. Reed? My son has never threatened your daughter.

He has never mistreated her. What exactly does she need protection from?””

Richard gave a dismissive laugh.

“Mrs. Hale, this is an adult conversation.””

Marcus pushed his chair back.

“Don't speak to my mother that way.””

Richard ignored him.

“Your son is fortunate to be marrying into a family with business experience. We could have helped him manage his assets.””

Marcus looked at Vanessa.

“Is that what you wanted?””

She began crying.

“I wanted a secure life.””

“You already had one with me.””

“Not the way I imagined.””

He stared at her.

Then she said something that made the entire room go quiet.

“My father said your inheritance would make everything easier. He said once we were married, we could restructure the trust and put the apartment under our names.””

Marcus looked at Richard.

Richard didn't deny it.

Instead, he said:

“Your father would have understood the importance of planning for the future.””

Marcus felt something inside him finally settle.

His father had spent his life protecting the family he loved.

And these people had treated that protection like an opportunity.

He turned toward Evelyn.

“Mom, are you ready to leave?””

She nodded.

Marcus took her coat from the back of the chair.

Vanessa rushed toward him.

“Wait. You're not leaving.””

He looked at her.

“I'm leaving with my mother.””

“What about tomorrow?””

Marcus paused.

Then he looked at the woman who had spent months treating his mother like an embarrassment.

“You should probably cancel the flowers.””

Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Marcus, don't do this!””

He removed her hand.

Richard stepped forward.

“You need to think carefully before you throw away this marriage. There are people who won't take kindly to being embarrassed.””

Marcus looked at him.

“Is that a threat?””

Richard smiled without warmth.

“It's advice.””

Marcus helped Evelyn put on her coat.

As they reached the dining-room doors, Patricia called after them.

“Vanessa deserves an explanation!””

Marcus turned one final time.

“She deserves the truth. So does everyone else.””

He left.

Outside, Evelyn held his arm.

“Sweetheart, are you sure?””

Marcus looked at her.

“I've never been more sure of anything.””

His phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel appeared.

I received another document from the trust administrator. You need to see this immediately.

Marcus opened the attachment.

It was a copy of an earlier correspondence between Reed Advisory Group and the trust's legal office.

At the bottom was a handwritten instruction.

He recognized the signature.

It belonged to his late father.

And the final sentence read:

Under no circumstances should the inheritance be released to any person claiming through a future marriage without Marcus's independent written consent.

Marcus stared at the screen.

His father had anticipated something.

But what he didn't understand was why Richard Reed had been trying to access the trust years before Marcus had even met Vanessa.

Then Daniel sent another message.

May you like

There's a name in the original correspondence that connects this entire situation to your father's estate.

And it wasn't Vanessa's.
