Chapter 1: The Slap That Silenced the Room

“THIEF! Tell me where you got this money!””
The slap cracked through the marble foyer like a gunshot.
Eight-year-old Ethan Carter stumbled backward, his black hoodie twisting around his small frame as he hit the polished floor. One hand flew to his cheek. The other desperately clutched the edge of the expensive rug.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then the little boy began to cry.
“I didn't steal anything,” Ethan whispered, his voice trembling.
“I swear I didn't.””
Standing above him was Vanessa Reed, a beautiful woman in a blood-red evening gown, her diamond earrings sparkling beneath the enormous crystal chandelier.
She looked like someone who belonged on the cover of a luxury magazine.
But the expression on her face was anything but beautiful.
“Don't you dare lie to me!”” Vanessa shouted.
She pointed toward a small black backpack lying beside the staircase.
“Do you think I'm stupid? I found thousands of dollars hidden in your bag!””
Ethan shook his head frantically.
“That's not mine!””
Vanessa grabbed the backpack and turned it upside down. Several thick bundles of cash spilled onto the marble floor.
The housekeeper, Mrs. Collins, gasped.
Two guests standing near the dining room exchanged uncomfortable glances.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Interesting. Because I certainly didn't put that money there.””
Ethan struggled to stand, tears running down his cheeks.
“You did!”” he cried.
“You put it in my bag when I was getting water!””
Vanessa's expression hardened.
“How dare you accuse me?””
She stepped closer, her high heels clicking against the marble.
“Your father should be ashamed of raising a child like you.””
Ethan lowered his head.
He was only eight years old.
He had been invited downstairs because his father had promised him a slice of birthday cake before the evening's business reception began.
He hadn't expected to be surrounded by strangers.
And he certainly hadn't expected to be called a thief.
“Please,” Ethan sobbed.
“I just want my dad.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Oh, now you want your daddy?””
She leaned down until her face was inches from his.
“Maybe he'll finally understand what kind of child he's raising.””
At that exact moment, the front doors opened.
“Ethan?””
A deep male voice echoed through the foyer.
Marcus Carter walked inside, wearing a dark blue dress shirt with the sleeves rolled neatly to his wrists. His black hair was slightly disheveled from the drive home, and his phone was still in his hand.
He had returned early from a business meeting.
He had expected to find his son eating cake.
Instead, he found him crying on the floor.
Marcus stopped.
His eyes moved from Ethan's swollen cheek to the scattered money.
Then they settled on Vanessa.
“What happened?””
Vanessa immediately changed her expression.
Her shoulders relaxed. Her voice became softer.
“Marcus, thank goodness you're here.””
Marcus ignored her and hurried toward his son.
“Ethan, sweetheart, look at me.””
The boy lifted his face.
His cheek was already turning red.
Marcus's jaw tightened.
“Who did this?””
Ethan pointed a trembling finger at Vanessa.
“She hit me, Dad.””
Marcus slowly stood.
His voice dropped.
“Why did you hit my son?””
Vanessa let out an exaggerated sigh.
“Marcus, don't make this more dramatic than it needs to be. I caught him stealing money.””
“What?””
“I found thousands of dollars in his backpack.””
Marcus looked down at the cash.
Then he looked at his son.
Ethan immediately grabbed his father's sleeve.
“Dad, she put that money there. I swear!””
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“Of course he'd say that.””
Marcus crouched again and gently examined Ethan's cheek.
“Did you touch that money?””
“No, Dad.””
“Did you take anything from Vanessa?””
“No! I only came downstairs because I wanted water.””
Marcus nodded.
“Okay. I believe you.””
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“Excuse me?””
Marcus stood and moved between her and Ethan.
“You heard me.””
“Marcus, you're embarrassing me in front of your guests.””
“You embarrassed yourself when you put your hands on my child.””
Vanessa's face flushed.
She glanced toward the guests, clearly expecting someone to support her.
Nobody spoke.
Mrs. Collins quietly picked up the backpack.
Marcus took out his phone.
“Good. Then the camera will tell me who's lying.””
Vanessa froze.
For the first time that evening, the confidence disappeared from her face.
“Marcus, you don't need to check that.””
He looked directly at her.
“Why are you scared of the footage?””
“I'm not scared. I just think this is unnecessary.””
“Then it shouldn't be a problem.””
Marcus opened the security application on his phone.
The mansion had cameras covering the entrances, hallways, staircase, and common areas. Marcus had installed them after an expensive watch disappeared during a previous party.
Vanessa knew about the cameras.
But she also knew something Marcus didn't.
She had spent the afternoon arranging the decorations and had discovered a blind spot near the decorative pillars.
And she had used it.
“Marcus,” she said, stepping forward, “please. Let's discuss this privately.””
He didn't look up.
“No. You had no problem humiliating an eight-year-old in public. We'll settle this in public.””
Then he tapped the security footage icon.
The screen began loading.
And Vanessa suddenly reached for his phone.
“DON'T PLAY THAT!””
Marcus pulled his hand away.
Everyone in the foyer turned toward her.
He stared at her for several seconds.
Then he quietly asked:
“What exactly are you afraid we're going to see?””
Vanessa said nothing.
On the phone screen, a video appeared.
Timestamp: 7:42 PM.

And the first person walking into the camera's view was not Ethan.
It was Vanessa.
