Chapter 6: The Original Documents Were Never Lost

“Put the phone down, Richard.””

Marcus's voice was quiet.

Richard remained beside the desk, his thumb hovering over the screen.

“I need to make a call.””

“To whom?””

“Someone who can explain all this.””

Marcus stepped toward him.

“You can explain it yourself.””

Richard shook his head.

“You're making a terrible mistake.””

“Then prove it.””

Richard looked at the photograph again.

For several seconds, neither man spoke.

Finally, Richard put the phone in his pocket.

“Laura came to me because she suspected someone was stealing from the company.””

Marcus frowned.

“You said she was investigating Vanessa.””

“She was investigating several people.””

“Who?””

“Peter, Vanessa, Daniel, and eventually me.””

Marcus felt a wave of anger rise through his chest.

“Why were you in that photograph?””

Richard exhaled.

“Because I was helping her.””

“Then why did she write that you knew where the original trust documents were?””

Richard looked away.

“Because I did.””

Marcus slammed his palm against the desk.

“Where are they?””

Richard didn't answer.

Marcus repeated the question.

“WHERE ARE THEY?””

Richard finally whispered:

“In a storage facility.””

“Which one?””

“Downtown.””

“Whose name is on the account?””

Richard looked at him.

“Mine.””

Marcus stared.

The documents had supposedly disappeared six months earlier.

At the time, Laura had been too ill to attend meetings. Marcus had trusted Richard to handle the legal paperwork.

Richard had told him the original documents were missing and that the lawyers were preparing replacements.

Marcus had believed him.

Now he realized that the missing documents might never have been lost.

“Why would you hide them?”” Marcus asked.

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“Because I discovered something in the trust agreement.””

“What?””

“Laura had placed restrictions on Ethan's inheritance. No one could access it until he reached twenty-five, except for specific educational and medical expenses.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know that.””

Richard continued.

“But there was another clause. If someone attempted to interfere with the trust or use its assets fraudulently, the trustee could freeze certain company-related distributions and trigger an independent investigation.””

Marcus stared at him.

“Who was the trustee?””

Richard hesitated.

“Your wife appointed someone.””

“Who?””

Richard opened his mouth.

Before he could answer, the office door swung open.

Mrs. Collins stood there, breathing heavily.

“Mr. Carter!””

Marcus turned.

“What happened?””

“It's Ethan.””

Marcus immediately moved toward her.

“Is he hurt?””

“No, sir. He's safe. But he woke up crying, and he keeps asking for you.””

Marcus glanced at Richard.

“Stay here.””

He hurried upstairs.

Ethan was sitting on his bed, wearing blue pajamas. His stuffed bear was tucked beneath one arm.

His cheek had a faint purple mark.

Marcus sat beside him.

“Hey, buddy.””

Ethan looked up.

“Are you mad at me?””

Marcus's heart broke.

“What? No.””

“Because I went into your office?””

Marcus gently took his son's hand.

“I'm not mad. You were trying to help.””

Ethan stared at the floor.

“Vanessa said I was bad for touching the letter.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You're not bad.””

“She said if I told you, you'd send me away.””

Marcus pulled him into a hug.

“Listen to me carefully. Nobody is going to send you away. This is your home.

You are my son. Nothing will ever change that.””

Ethan began crying again.

“I miss Mom.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“Me too, sweetheart.””

The little boy leaned against his chest.

After a moment, he whispered:

“Mom told me something else.””

Marcus looked down.

“What did she say?””

“She said if a man came looking for the silver key, I should never give it to him.””

Marcus went completely still.

“What man?””

Ethan reached beneath his pillow and pulled out a small photograph.

It showed a younger Laura standing beside Ethan's birthday cake.

Behind them, near the doorway, stood Richard.

But something else caught Marcus's attention.

Richard was holding the wooden music box.

The photograph had been taken four months before Laura died.

Marcus looked at Ethan.

“Did Mom tell you anything about Richard?””

Ethan nodded.

“She said he was a friend, but sometimes friends can do bad things.””

Marcus swallowed.

“Did he ever come into your room?””

Ethan nodded again.

“Last month.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

“What did he want?””

“He asked where I kept the music box.””

“Did you tell him?””

“No. I said it was in my closet.””

Marcus carefully examined the photograph.

Then he noticed something written on the back.

The key opens more than one door.

He read it twice.

Suddenly, he understood why Laura had hidden the key inside the music box.

It wasn't simply a key to the cabinet.

It was connected to something else.

“Dad?”” Ethan whispered.

“Yes?””

“Can I tell you a secret?””

“Of course.””

Ethan leaned closer.

“Vanessa came into my room yesterday.””

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“What did she do?””

“She asked me if I had found the little silver key.””

Marcus felt a chill.

“What did you say?””

“I told her no.””

“Good.””

Ethan hesitated.

“Then she said she already knew where Mom had hidden the other one.””

Marcus's heart skipped.

“The other one?””

Ethan nodded.

“She said there were two keys.””

Marcus stared at him.

The music box had contained one.

The cabinet had accepted it.

But Laura's note suggested another lock.

Another door.

Another secret.

Marcus kissed his son's forehead.

“Thank you for telling me.””

He stood and walked to the bedroom door.

Mrs. Collins was waiting outside.

“Please stay with Ethan.””

“Of course, sir.””

Marcus returned to his office.

Richard was no longer standing beside the desk.

The chair was empty.

The front door security monitor showed his car pulling away from the property.

Marcus immediately called the security supervisor.

“Richard Hale just left. I want his vehicle monitored. Do not confront him.””

“Understood, sir.””

Marcus looked at the desk.

Richard's second envelope remained there.

But something else was missing.

The USB drive.

He searched the desk, the floor, and the open drawer.

Nothing.

Richard had taken it.

Marcus grabbed his phone.

Then another notification appeared.

An email from an unfamiliar address.

No subject line.

Only one attachment.

Marcus opened it.

It was a scanned copy of a legal document dated two days before Laura died.

The heading read:

*AMENDMENT TO THE CARTER FAMILY TRUST.*

Beneath it was a handwritten note:

Marcus, if you're seeing this, it means someone has already tried to take Ethan's inheritance.

He scrolled down.

The document named the independent trustee.

Marcus's eyes widened.

It wasn't Richard.

It wasn't Peter.

It wasn't a bank.

It was someone he had never expected.

*Ethan Carter himself.*

Attached beneath the document was a second photograph.

A woman standing outside the hospital room where Laura had died.

Marcus recognized her immediately.

It was Vanessa.

But the date on the photograph was impossible.

It had been taken three days after Laura's death.

And Vanessa was holding a document Marcus had believed had been destroyed.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A woman's voice spoke softly.

“Mr. Carter? My name is Eleanor Brooks. I was your wife's attorney.””

Marcus gripped the phone.

“Why are you calling me now?””

“Because Laura left instructions that I could only contact you if someone tried to access Ethan's trust.””

Marcus looked at the photograph.

“Who is the other trustee?””

There was a brief silence.

Then Eleanor said:

“Your son is the legal beneficiary, but there's another person with authority to protect his interests.””

“Who?””

Her answer made Marcus's blood run cold.

“His mother appointed you, Marcus. But she also appointed someone else.””

“Who?””

Eleanor took a breath.

“Vanessa Reed.””

Marcus stared at the phone.

“That can't be right.””

“I'm afraid it is.””

“Why would Laura appoint Vanessa?””

Eleanor's voice dropped.

“Because Vanessa wasn't always working against your family.””

Marcus felt the room spin.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Laura discovered the truth about Daniel and Richard. And before she died, she made Vanessa promise to protect Ethan.””

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

The woman who had slapped his son.

The woman who had planted money in his backpack.

The woman who had desperately tried to stop him from watching the security footage.

Had once been entrusted with protecting his child.

Then Eleanor said something even more disturbing.

“Mr. Carter, there's one more thing. The document Vanessa showed you tonight wasn't the real transfer authorization.””

Marcus frowned.

“What?””

“The original authorization was signed by someone else.””

“Who signed it?””

Eleanor paused.

“Your late wife.””

And suddenly Marcus understood that the mystery was far bigger than an $85,000 theft.

Because if Laura had authorized the original transaction, then someone had forged her signature—or used a document she had deliberately prepared.

And the only person who could explain why was the woman upstairs.

The woman who had just tried to destroy his son.
