Chapter 8: The Night Someone Tried to Take Ethan

Marcus drove back toward the mansion so fast that the security officer beside him had to grip the dashboard.

His phone remained pressed against his ear.

“Mrs. Collins! Answer me!””

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a familiar voice came through.

“Mr. Carter?””

It was Mrs. Collins.

“I'm here, sir.””

“Where's Ethan?””

“Upstairs. I've locked the bedroom door.””

“Is anyone inside the house?””

“I heard someone downstairs. I think they came through the kitchen.””

Marcus's blood ran cold.

“Stay with Ethan. Do not open that door for anyone except me.””

“Yes, sir.””

He ended the call and contacted emergency services.

Then he called the security supervisor.

“Get every available guard to the east entrance. Nobody engages unless necessary. The police are on their way.””

When Marcus reached the mansion, two security vehicles were already blocking the driveway.

The front garden lights were on.

One of the side windows had been shattered.

Marcus ran inside.

“Ethan!””

“Dad!””

His son's voice came from upstairs.

Marcus took the staircase two steps at a time.

He found Mrs. Collins standing outside Ethan's bedroom with a heavy wooden lamp in her hands.

Her face was pale.

“Where is he?””

“Inside, sir.””

Marcus opened the door.

Ethan ran straight into his arms.

“Dad!””

Marcus held him tightly.

“I'm here. You're safe.””

Ethan was trembling.

“Someone came into the house.””

“I know.””

“He asked Mrs. Collins where I was.””

Marcus looked toward the housekeeper.

“Did you see him?””

She nodded.

“He was wearing a black jacket. He had a small scar near his left eye.””

Marcus immediately recognized the description.

Daniel Reed.

He had seen photographs of Vanessa's brother.

The man had visited the mansion several times during the previous year, always asking for money.

Marcus pulled out his phone.

“Security, do we have eyes on the intruder?””

“Negative, sir. He escaped through the kitchen.””

“Did he take anything?””

There was a pause.

“Yes.””

“What?””

“The black metal case from your office.””

Marcus froze.

The case from locker 417.

He had left it in his car.

He immediately checked the vehicle location through the security system.

The car was still parked outside.

The case was gone.

Someone had entered the vehicle.

Marcus looked at the broken window.

This wasn't a random break-in.

Someone knew exactly what he had discovered.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A man's voice chuckled.

“Hello, Marcus.””

Daniel.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“Where are you?””

“Relax. I'm not interested in fighting.””

“You broke into my house.””

“I came to collect something that doesn't belong to you.””

“Return the case.””

Daniel laughed.

“You always were a difficult man.””

Marcus walked into the hallway, away from Ethan.

“Listen carefully. You have five minutes to return everything.””

“Or what?””

“Or the police will find you.””

Daniel sighed.

“Marcus, you're missing the bigger picture. That case contains information that could ruin several people. You don't want that.””

“I'm not protecting anyone.””

“Not even Vanessa?””

Marcus said nothing.

Daniel continued.

“She told you, didn't she? About the trust?””

Marcus's grip tightened.

“What does Vanessa have to do with this?””

Daniel laughed again.

“Everything.””

The call disconnected.

Marcus stared at the phone.

Then a new message arrived.

A video.

He opened it.

The footage showed Vanessa sitting in what appeared to be a hotel room.

Her hair was messy.

Her red evening gown had been replaced by a black sweater.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Marcus, if you're watching this, Daniel has probably contacted you.””

She swallowed.

“I know what you saw tonight. I know you found the ledger.””

Marcus leaned closer.

Vanessa continued.

“I'm not going to ask you to forgive me. I know what I did to Ethan was unforgivable.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But you need to know why I put that money in his backpack.””

Marcus felt his stomach tighten.

Vanessa took a breath.

“Daniel threatened to expose something about your wife. He said if I didn't help him get the trust documents, he would make sure Ethan lost everything.””

She looked down.

“I thought I could control the situation. I thought I could scare you into signing the papers without actually hurting Ethan.””

Marcus felt sick.

“You hit him,” he whispered, even though she couldn't hear him.

Vanessa continued.

“I know what you're thinking. I know you believe I planned everything.””

She wiped her cheek.

“But the money wasn't the real reason I was afraid of the footage.””

Marcus stared at the screen.

“What?””

Vanessa leaned toward the camera.

“Look at the recording from the east hallway. The footage from 7:39 PM.””

The video ended.

Marcus immediately opened the security application.

He selected the requested timestamp.

The east hallway camera showed Vanessa walking toward the office.

But she wasn't alone.

A man followed her.

He wore a dark jacket and carried a small leather bag.

Marcus paused the video.

He zoomed in.

The man's face became visible.

Richard Hale.

Marcus felt his stomach drop.

He continued watching.

Richard handed Vanessa a document.

She read it.

Then she shook her head.

Richard grabbed her wrist.

Vanessa pulled away.

He pointed toward Ethan's backpack.

Then he handed her a thick envelope.

Marcus watched the next several seconds.

Vanessa opened the envelope.

Inside was money.

She looked at Richard.

Then she put it into Ethan's backpack.

Marcus felt his entire body go cold.

The money hadn't been Vanessa's idea.

Richard had delivered it.

But that didn't excuse what she had done afterward.

The footage continued.

At 7:41 PM, Richard walked toward the front entrance.

Vanessa remained near the staircase.

She looked at Ethan.

Then she slapped him.

Marcus stopped the video.

He stared at the screen.

Richard had created the situation.

Vanessa had carried it out.

And both had allowed an innocent child to suffer.

Suddenly, another recording appeared.

A notification from the office camera.

Live motion detected.

Marcus opened it.

The camera showed a man entering his private office.

It was Daniel.

He walked directly toward the desk.

He opened the bottom drawer.

Then he removed a small wooden box.

Marcus recognized it immediately.

Laura's second music box.

The one he had never known existed.

Daniel turned it over and removed a tiny envelope.

He opened it.

His expression changed.

Then he pulled out his phone.

Marcus watched him make a call.

A few seconds later, Daniel spoke.

“It's here. I found the original.””

A voice answered through the recording.

Marcus couldn't make out every word.

But he heard the final sentence clearly.

“Destroy it before Marcus finds out who Ethan's real guardian is.””

The office camera captured Daniel's face as he smiled.

Then he said a name.

“Understood, Richard.””

Marcus's heart hammered.

He looked at Ethan.

Then at the security footage.

The original document had been found.

But Daniel and Richard were still searching for something else.

Something involving Ethan's guardianship.

Marcus immediately called Eleanor Brooks.

She answered on the first ring.

“Mr. Carter?””

“I need you to tell me everything about Ethan's legal guardianship.””

There was a long silence.

Then Eleanor asked:

“Have you found the second document?””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“Yes.””

“Then we have a serious problem.””

“What problem?””

Eleanor's voice became urgent.

“Laura didn't simply appoint you as Ethan's guardian.””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean?””

“She created a conditional guardianship arrangement. If certain evidence of financial misconduct became public, the court could transfer temporary guardianship to an independent family trustee.””

Marcus felt his blood run cold.

“Who?””

Eleanor hesitated.

Then she answered:

“Your wife's older sister.””

Marcus stared.

Laura had never told him she had a sister.

“That's impossible. Laura was an only child.””

“No, Mr. Carter. She wasn't.””

May you like

Eleanor lowered her voice.

“And that woman has been looking for Ethan for three years.””
