Chapter 7: The Woman Who Was Supposed to Protect My Son

“Vanessa was supposed to protect Ethan?””

Marcus repeated the question as if saying it aloud might somehow make it less absurd.

On the other end of the phone, Eleanor Brooks remained silent for a moment.

“Yes, Mr. Carter. Your wife appointed Vanessa as a secondary protector of the trust. But that appointment came with very specific conditions.””

Marcus paced across his office.

“Then why did she put money in my son's backpack? Why did she slap him? Why did she accuse him of stealing?””

“I can't answer those questions without speaking to her.””

“She isn't going anywhere.””

“Marcus, please listen. Laura left detailed instructions. The trust was structured to protect Ethan from anyone who might attempt to manipulate his inheritance, including members of the family.””

Marcus stopped walking.

“Including me?””

“Anyone, sir.””

He looked toward the bedroom upstairs.

His son was finally sleeping.

“Why would Laura trust Vanessa?””

“Because Vanessa helped her uncover the original fraud.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

For months, he had believed Vanessa entered his life because she genuinely loved him. She had been patient with Ethan, brought him gifts, attended school events, and made promises about becoming part of their family.

Now every memory felt contaminated.

“When can we meet?”” Marcus asked.

“Tomorrow morning. But there's something you need to do first.””

“What?””

“Find the original music box.””

Marcus frowned.

“Ethan has it.””

“No. I mean the box itself. Laura told me there was a compartment beneath the wooden base. The silver key opens the cabinet, but the second key is hidden inside the music box.””

Marcus remembered Ethan's words.

There were two keys.

He immediately called Mrs. Collins.

“Please bring Ethan's music box to my office.””

A few minutes later, the housekeeper appeared holding the small wooden box.

It was made of polished walnut, with a tiny painted rose on the lid.

Marcus placed it on his desk.

He turned it over.

At first, he saw nothing unusual.

Then he noticed a narrow seam beneath the base.

He pressed gently.

A small wooden panel shifted.

Inside was a tiny silver key and a folded photograph.

Marcus unfolded the photograph.

Laura was sitting on a hospital bed.

Vanessa sat beside her.

They were holding hands.

On the back, Laura had written:

Some promises are harder to keep than others.

Marcus stared at the picture.

“Mrs. Collins, did you know Vanessa visited Laura in the hospital?””

The housekeeper hesitated.

“Yes, sir.””

“How often?””

“Quite frequently toward the end.””

Marcus looked up.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Mrs. Collins lowered her eyes.

“Mrs. Laura asked me not to.””

“Why?””

“She said you already had enough to worry about.””

Marcus rubbed his face.

He had spent three years believing that Vanessa and Laura barely knew each other.

Apparently, they had shared conversations he had never been part of.

He picked up the second key.

“Do you know what this opens?””

Mrs. Collins shook her head.

“No, sir.””

Marcus examined the key.

A small number had been engraved near its base.

*417.*

He immediately recognized the number.

It was the locker number at the private storage facility where Richard had admitted keeping the original trust documents.

Marcus called the security supervisor.

“Get the vehicle ready. We're going to the storage facility.””

Before leaving, he went upstairs to check on Ethan.

The little boy was awake.

“Dad?””

Marcus sat beside him.

“Hey, buddy.””

“Are you going somewhere?””

“I need to find something Mom left behind.””

Ethan looked worried.

“Are you going to leave me here?””

“Never.””

Marcus took his son's small hand.

“Mrs. Collins and the security team will stay with you. I'll be back as soon as I can.””

Ethan nodded.

Then he reached into his bedside drawer and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“Mom gave me this too.””

Marcus unfolded it.

It was a drawing.

A little house.

Three people stood outside: Laura, Marcus, and Ethan.

Beneath them were five words written in Laura's handwriting.

Love protects. Money only tests.

Marcus felt tears burn his eyes.

He kissed Ethan's forehead.

“I love you, sweetheart.””

“I love you too, Dad.””

At 3:10 AM, Marcus arrived at the storage facility with two security officers.

The building was nearly empty.

A tired employee checked his identification and led him to locker 417.

Marcus inserted the second key.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a black metal case.

He carried it to a nearby table and opened it.

There were three folders, a flash drive, several bank statements, and a sealed envelope bearing Laura's handwriting.

The first folder contained company transactions.

The second contained photographs of Vanessa meeting Daniel.

The third contained copies of documents signed by Richard.

But the most disturbing discovery was a handwritten ledger.

For almost two years, money had been transferred from Carter Holdings into several private accounts.

The total exceeded $2.4 million.

Marcus stared at the final page.

One signature appeared repeatedly.

Richard Hale.

Another name appeared beneath it.

Daniel Reed.

But the third name made his hands tremble.

Vanessa Reed.

He opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a letter.

Marcus,

If you have found this, then the people I feared have finally made their move.

I need you to understand something. Vanessa came to me voluntarily. She admitted that Daniel had been using her access to our family to obtain information about Ethan's inheritance.

She was frightened. She wanted to help, but she was also afraid of what her brother would do.

I gave her one chance to make things right.

Marcus stopped reading.

A photograph slipped out of the envelope.

It showed Vanessa holding a newborn baby.

But the baby wasn't Ethan.

It was a photograph from years earlier.

On the back was a date and a name.

*Daniel Reed — Hospital Records, 2018.*

Marcus frowned.

Why had Laura kept a photograph of Vanessa's brother's hospital records?

Then his phone vibrated.

A message from the security supervisor.

*Sir, we have a problem. Vanessa has left the mansion.*

Marcus immediately called.

“How?””

“Someone disabled the rear security cameras. The guest bedroom window was found open.””

“Where is Ethan?””

“Mrs. Collins has him. He's safe.””

Marcus exhaled.

Then another message arrived.

This time, it came from Vanessa's number.

Marcus, don't trust the man who is helping you.

A second message appeared.

Daniel is coming for Ethan. Richard already knows.

Marcus looked at the ledger.

Then at the photograph of Vanessa.

He called the mansion.

“Lock every entrance. Nobody comes near my son.””

But before the security supervisor could respond, he heard a terrible sound through the phone.

A crash.

Then Mrs. Collins screamed.

And a man's voice shouted:

“Where is the boy?””
