Chapter 8: The Family Portrait

The old Hale estate stood on a hill overlooking the city.

Its iron gates were locked, the gardens overgrown, and the windows covered with heavy curtains.

Marcus hadn't visited since his father's funeral.

Now he stood outside the front entrance with Sergeant Collins and two armed officers.

A cold wind moved through the trees.

“Mr. Hale,” Collins said, “we need to be careful. If your father is alive, we don't know what resources he has.””

Marcus stared at the front door.

“He has always had resources.””

“Do you know where he might be?””

“My father's office.””

“Why?””

“Because that's where he kept everything.””

The officers forced the side entrance.

Inside, the house smelled of dust and old wood.

A grandfather clock stood frozen in the hallway.

Marcus walked past it.

Every room brought back memories.

His mother playing piano.

Daniel stealing cigarettes from their father's desk.

Richard sitting at the dining table, demanding perfect grades and perfect behavior.

The family had looked beautiful from the outside.

Inside, it had always been a battlefield.

They reached the office.

Marcus opened the door.

Everything was exactly as he remembered.

Dark oak shelves. Leather furniture. A massive desk.

And above the fireplace hung a large family portrait.

Richard stood in the center.

His wife stood beside him.

Marcus and Daniel stood on either side.

The four of them looked like a successful, respectable family.

Marcus approached the painting.

“The truth is behind the family portrait.””

Collins examined the wall.

“Can you remove it?””

Marcus lifted the frame.

It came away more easily than expected.

Behind it was a small metal compartment.

The sergeant examined the lock.

“Can you open it?””

Marcus reached into his pocket and pulled out the red key.

He inserted it.

It turned.

A hidden panel clicked.

Inside was a black metal box.

Marcus pulled it out.

The lid had a fingerprint scanner.

“Damn it.””

Collins leaned closer.

“Can you access it?””

Marcus studied the surface.

There was a small inscription beneath the scanner.

For the firstborn.

He looked at the family portrait.

His father had always referred to Daniel as the responsible son.

But Marcus was the firstborn.

He pressed his thumb against the scanner.

A green light appeared.

The box opened.

Inside were three things.

A USB drive.

A stack of signed legal documents.

And a photograph.

Marcus picked up the photograph.

It showed Eleanor standing outside a building, holding a black folder.

Beside her stood Vanessa.

They were smiling.

On the back, someone had written:

The two women who knew everything.

Marcus stared.

“Vanessa and Eleanor were working together?””

Collins took the photograph.

“Looks that way.””

Marcus opened the documents.

The first page contained the ownership structure of Hale Industries.

The second showed a series of transfers to offshore companies.

The third carried Richard's signature.

Marcus frowned.

“What is this?””

Collins scanned the pages.

“Looks like financial fraud.””

“That's impossible. My father built the company legally.””

“Apparently, someone was moving substantial money through shell companies.””

Marcus turned another page.

Then he found Eleanor's name.

She had signed a statement confirming that she had discovered the transactions.

But the date was strange.

It was dated two weeks before her disappearance.

At the bottom, she had written:

I will testify if anything happens to me.

Marcus sat down.

His wife hadn't been hiding an affair.

She had been investigating his family.

And Vanessa had known.

A sound came from the hallway.

Collins raised his hand.

Everyone went silent.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Then a voice.

“You always did know how to find things, Marcus.””

Richard stepped into the doorway.

He looked older than in the photographs, but his posture remained perfectly straight.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

His dark suit was immaculate.

Marcus stood.

“Dad.””

Richard glanced at the open box.

“You found it.””

“You're alive.””

Richard gave a small smile.

“Clearly.””

Marcus approached him.

“You let us bury you.””

“I needed to disappear.””

“You let Lily grow up believing her grandfather was dead.””

Richard shrugged.

“Children adapt.””

Marcus's face twisted with anger.

“Don't you dare talk about my daughter.””

Richard glanced at Collins.

“Sergeant, surely we can discuss this like civilized men.””

Collins stepped forward.

“Richard Hale, you're being questioned regarding suspected financial crimes, unlawful confinement, and evidence tampering.””

Richard laughed.

“You have no idea how complicated this is.””

Marcus held up the photograph.

“Why were Eleanor and Vanessa together?””

Richard looked at it.

For the first time, his expression changed.

“Where did you find that?””

“In your secret box.””

Richard looked toward the open compartment.

“You shouldn't have opened it.””

“Why?””

“Because now you've become part of it.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I was always part of it. You just made sure I didn't know.””

Richard's eyes hardened.

“Eleanor was supposed to hand over the evidence.””

“She refused.””

“She made a foolish decision.””

“So you locked her beneath my house?””

Richard said nothing.

Marcus stepped closer.

“Did you kill her?””

“No.””

“Then why won't you let us rescue her?””

Richard's silence was answer enough.

Collins moved forward.

“Sir, turn around.””

Richard suddenly smiled.

“You think you've won?””

The sergeant reached for his arm.

Richard raised both hands.

“Very well.””

But as the officers approached, he looked directly at Marcus.

“Before you celebrate, there's something you should know about your beloved wife.””

Marcus stared.

Richard continued.

“Eleanor wasn't investigating us alone. She was planning to leave you.””

Marcus felt the words strike him.

“Liar.””

Richard shook his head.

“Ask Vanessa.””

Marcus's phone rang.

A message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of a hospital document.

At the top was Eleanor's name.

Below it was a date.

The day before her disappearance.

And one line had been highlighted.

*Patient pregnancy status: Positive.*

Marcus stared.

His hands went numb.

He looked at Richard.

“What is this?””

Richard's voice became almost gentle.

“Your wife was carrying a child, Marcus.””

Marcus shook his head.

“I know that.””

Richard's smile disappeared.

“No. You don't understand.””

He pointed at the document.

“That child wasn't yours.””

For several seconds, Marcus couldn't breathe.

Then Collins's radio crackled.

“Sergeant, urgent update. We've located Vanessa.””

“Where?””

“Near the Hale property.””

“Is she in custody?””

The officer hesitated.

“No. She's at the pool.””

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

“What happened?””

The reply came through.

“She's trying to open the underground chamber.””

Richard began laughing.

And Marcus finally understood why his father had wanted him to find the black box.

May you like

It wasn't just evidence.

It was bait.
