Chapter 11: The Daughter Nobody Saved

The name on the screen burned into my mind.

*Lily Cross.*

Daniel’s daughter.

The child everyone thought disappeared.

The child who supposedly vanished after the fire.

The child who had been a ghost in every secret we uncovered.

I looked around the room.

Everyone had the same reaction.

Shock.

Except Daniel.

He looked terrified.

Not confused.

Not surprised.

Terrified.

And that told me everything.

“Lily is alive.””

It wasn’t a question.

Daniel didn’t answer.

Emily did.

“Yes.””

My eyes moved toward her.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“I suspected.””

I almost laughed.

Another secret.

Another person who knew.

Another truth I had to discover from someone else.

“How long?””

Emily’s eyes filled with regret.

“Since before I disappeared.””

I shook my head.

“You all keep saying that.””

Nobody spoke.

“You all knew.””

My voice cracked.

“You all knew my wife was alive. You knew Daniel was alive. You knew Lily existed.””

I looked at Sophie.

“And my daughter was living in the middle of all of this.””

Emily stepped toward me.

“Richard—”

“No.””

I raised my hand.

“Don’t explain.””

The room became silent.

Because for once, nobody interrupted me.

Nobody corrected me.

Nobody told me they were protecting me.

I looked at the phone again.

The message was still there.

The photograph.

The shadow.

Lily’s name.

“Call her.””

Emily looked at me.

“What?””

“Call Lily.””

A pause.

“We can’t.””

“Why?””

Emily looked at Daniel.

“Because if Lily sent that message…”

She stopped.

“What?””

“Then she wants us to find her.””

I stared.

“Isn’t that the point?””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice lowered.

“Lily never wanted to be found.””

A chill moved through me.

“Why?””

Emily looked toward the burned walls.

“Because she knows what Daniel is capable of.””

Daniel suddenly spoke.

“She doesn’t know the truth.””

Everyone turned.

Emily’s expression hardened.

“Don’t.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“You’re still lying to him.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You don’t get to accuse anyone of lying.””

His jaw tightened.

“I’m telling you, Lily doesn’t understand what happened.””

Emily laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“She understands more than anyone.””

“Because you manipulated her.””

The room went quiet.

Emily stared at Daniel.

“What did you say?””

Daniel looked away.

“You convinced her I was the enemy.””

I felt something shift.

Because Daniel didn’t deny hurting Lily.

He only denied the story.

That was different.

I stepped closer.

“What happened to Lily?””

Daniel looked at me.

For a moment, he looked exhausted.

Not dangerous.

Just tired.

“She was scared.””

“She was your daughter.””

“I know.””

“Then why was she afraid of you?””

No answer.

Vanessa whispered:

“Because she saw him.””

I looked at her.

“Saw what?””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“The night of the fire.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“Stop.””

Vanessa didn’t move.

“You don’t control the story anymore.””

Daniel stared at her.

For the first time, she wasn’t afraid.

“What did Lily see?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She saw Daniel trying to burn the evidence.””

My eyes narrowed.

“But you said you started the fire.””

“I did.””

“Then why?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“Because Daniel had locked the evidence inside.””

I frowned.

“Why would he do that?””

“Because he knew Emily was looking for it.””

“And Lily?””

“She was there.””

I looked at Daniel.

“You locked your daughter in a house with evidence and a fire?””

Daniel’s face changed.

“I didn’t lock her in.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“You locked every door.””

Silence.

A terrible silence.

Daniel looked at the floor.

And that was the first time he looked guilty.

Not afraid.

Guilty.

Sophie whispered:

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

She was crying.

I immediately knelt beside her.

“Hey.””

She grabbed my hand.

“I remember the smoke.””

Everything stopped.

Emily covered her mouth.

Vanessa froze.

“What did you say?””

Sophie looked confused.

“I remember.””

I held her carefully.

“Remember what?””

She frowned, trying to find the words.

“The house.””

My heart pounded.

“What house?””

“The bad house.””

Daniel took one step forward.

I immediately stood.

“Stay away from her.””

Sophie continued quietly.

“Mommy was crying.””

Emily broke down.

“She remembers.””

I looked at Emily.

“What happened that night?””

She wiped her tears.

“I took Sophie with me.””

My heart stopped.

“You took her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew Daniel was dangerous.””

I stared.

“Sophie was there?””

Emily nodded.

“She was only a baby.””

I looked at my daughter.

My daughter.

The little girl who had been afraid of shadows.

The little girl who told me someone was watching her.

She had been there.

She had lived through something she couldn’t understand.

I turned to Daniel.

“What did you do?””

His face hardened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

“Fix what?””

“My mistakes.””

I shook my head.

“You don’t fix mistakes by destroying children’s lives.””

Daniel looked at Sophie.

“I never wanted her involved.””

“Yet she was.””

Silence.

Then the front door creaked.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood outside.

Older.

Wearing a dark coat.

Holding a folder.

Daniel whispered:

“No.””

Emily stepped forward.

“Lily?””

The woman looked inside.

Her eyes landed on Daniel.

And there was no fear.

Only anger.

“I spent ten years waiting for you to admit it.””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Lily…”

The woman walked inside.

I stared.

This was the girl from the photographs.

The child who vanished.

But she wasn’t a child anymore.

She was a woman carrying years of pain.

She looked at Sophie.

Then at me.

“I’m sorry.””

I didn’t know what to say.

She looked at Emily.

“You brought him here.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

Lily looked at me.

“He brought himself.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

She placed the folder on the table.

“Because Daniel wanted you to find the truth.””

I looked at Daniel.

He looked away.

“What’s in the folder?””

Lily opened it.

Documents.

Photos.

Records.

Then she pulled out one final photograph.

A photograph of Emily.

But not with Daniel.

With another man.

A man I recognized.

My breath caught.

Because the man standing beside Emily was me.

Except the date on the picture was impossible.

It was taken…

one year before I met Emily.

I stared.

“That’s not possible.””

Lily looked at me.

“It is.””

My hands shook.

“Who took this?””

Lily’s expression became serious.

“Your wife knew you before you knew her.””

I looked at Emily.

She was crying.

“Richard…”

I stepped back.

“No.””

Lily continued.

“The biggest secret Daniel hid wasn’t the money.””

She pointed at the photograph.

“It was you.””

I felt the room spinning.

“What are you talking about?””

Lily looked at Sophie.

Then back at me.

“Your entire marriage was built on a truth you were never allowed to remember.””

The words hit like a punch.

I looked at Emily.

The woman I loved.

The woman I lost.

The woman who came back.

And suddenly, I had a terrifying thought.

What if she wasn’t the only person who had been hiding something?

What if I had forgotten something too?

Lily opened the folder.

Inside was a medical report.

My name was written across the top.

My hands went cold.

“What is that?””

Lily looked at me.

“The reason you don’t remember meeting Emily before.””

I stared at the report.

Then at Daniel.

Then at Emily.

And Emily whispered the words that shattered everything.

“Richard…”

“You didn’t just lose me five years ago.””

May you like

She took a shaky breath.

“You lost an entire year of your life.””
