Chapter 4: The Voice From Daniel’s Past

For several seconds, I couldn’t move.

The phone was still pressed against my ear.

The kitchen lights hummed above me.

Rain tapped against the windows.

But everything else disappeared.

Because the last sentence I heard didn’t sound like a warning.

It sounded like a confession.

*Your wife didn’t die because of an accident.*

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Lily?””

Silence.

“Lily, answer me.””

Nothing.

The call had ended.

I stared at the screen.

Unknown number.

No name.

No way to call back.

Just four words burned into my mind.

She was trying to save Sophie.

Behind me, Vanessa whispered:

“Did she say Lily?””

I turned slowly.

Her face had lost all color.

“You knew she would contact me.””

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

I noticed.

“You expected this.””

“I didn’t.””

“Then why are you scared?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That was becoming a pattern.

Every time I got close to the truth, Vanessa didn’t fight.

She froze.

Like she was watching a disaster she already knew was coming.

I stepped closer.

“You’re going to tell me everything.””

She looked down.

“I wish I could.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“You don’t get to say that anymore.””

She looked up.

I saw pain in her eyes.

But I also saw something else.

Regret.

“I’m serious, Vanessa. My daughter has spent who knows how long being afraid in her own home. My wife left behind a secret that could explain why. And you knew pieces of it.””

“I know.””

“You knew Emily.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Daniel.””

“Yes.””

“You knew Lily.””

A pause.

“Yes.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“How many more people know what happened except me?””

Vanessa looked away.

“That’s the problem, Richard.””

“What is?””

“Everyone who knew the truth either disappeared…”

She swallowed.

“…or was silenced.””

The word hung between us.

Silenced.

I didn’t like the way she said it.

Not as a dramatic phrase.

As a fact.

I walked to the table and picked up the envelope with my name on it.

Emily’s handwriting was on the front.

I knew it instantly.

Even after years.

Even after all this time.

My wife’s handwriting.

The same handwriting that used to be on grocery lists stuck to the refrigerator.

The same handwriting that filled birthday cards.

The same handwriting that wrote notes beside my coffee cup before work.

My hands shook.

“When was the last time you saw Emily?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Two days before she died.””

I looked at her.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

She hesitated.

Then she sat down.

“I met Emily at a coffee shop.””

“Why?””

“Because she contacted me.””

That surprised me.

“Why would she contact you?””

“Because she knew I had connections to Daniel.””

I frowned.

“You were helping him.””

“Yes.””

“Then why would she trust you?””

Vanessa looked ashamed.

“Because I told her I was trying to expose him.””

“Were you?””

At first, she didn’t answer.

Then:

“Eventually.””

Eventually.

A dangerous word.

“What did Emily tell you?””

Vanessa stared at the envelope.

“She said Daniel had been searching for something for months.””

“The evidence.””

“Yes.””

“What evidence?””

“She didn’t tell me.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying you don’t know.””

“Because I don’t.””

“Then what do you know?””

Vanessa leaned forward.

“Daniel believed Emily had proof that he abandoned Lily.””

I frowned.

“Abandoned?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Lily wasn’t just his daughter.””

“What does that mean?””

“She was a witness.””

The room became silent.

“A witness to what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“To the night Daniel tried to destroy his own life.””

I felt a chill.

“Explain.””

“Lily saw something she wasn’t supposed to see.””

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice lowered.

“I don’t know.””

“You expect me to believe that?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel spent years trying to find out whether Lily had told anyone.””

I looked toward the stairs.

Toward Sophie.

My daughter.

“What does this have to do with Emily?””

“Emily found Lily.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She found her after Daniel disappeared.””

“When?””

“Months before you met me.””

My mind raced.

Emily had known.

Emily had been searching.

Emily had been involved in something much bigger than I ever realized.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Vanessa looked heartbroken.

“Because she was afraid.””

“Of Daniel?””

“Yes.””

“But Daniel was dead.””

Vanessa looked away.

“That’s what everyone believed.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

I walked to the window.

Outside, the street was empty.

Dark.

Quiet.

Too quiet.

“How long have you known Daniel might still be alive?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I turned.

“How long?””

Her voice was barely a whisper.

“Since before I married you.””

The confession hit harder than anything else.

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn’t know what else to do.

“You married me while knowing that?””

“I didn’t know where he was.””

“But you knew he was alive.””

“Yes.””

“And you still entered my life?””

She started crying.

“I fell in love with you.””

I looked away.

The words hurt.

Because part of me believed her.

That was the worst part.

If she had been cruel, it would have been easier.

If she had been pretending from the beginning, I could hate her.

But life wasn’t that simple.

People could love you and still hurt you.

They could protect you and still betray you.

They could tell themselves they were doing the right thing while destroying everything around them.

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Lily.

I opened it.

*I’m sorry I called. I know Vanessa told you not to trust me.*

I looked at Vanessa.

“She never mentioned you contacting me.””

Her face changed.

“What?””

Another message appeared.

*But you need to know something. Daniel didn’t disappear. He changed his name.*

My heart raced.

Then another.

*And he has been watching your family for years.*

I felt my stomach drop.

I looked toward the staircase again.

Toward Sophie.

My daughter.

The child who had been afraid to speak.

The child who said Vanessa hurt her.

The child who knew about things she shouldn’t know.

“Richard?””

Vanessa’s voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

“Did Daniel know about Sophie?””

Her expression changed instantly.

I didn’t need an answer.

He did.

“How?””

Vanessa stood quickly.

“I don’t know.””

“You’re lying.””

“I’m not.””

“Then why did you react like that?””

She looked terrified.

“Because if Daniel knows Sophie exists…”

She stopped.

“What?””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Richard, listen to me.””

I pulled away.

“No. You listen.””

My voice shook.

“If someone has been watching my family, I need to know.””

“You need to take Sophie and leave.””

The words surprised me.

“What?””

“Leave tonight.””

“Why?””

“Because he knows.””

“Who?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with fear.

“Daniel.””

A sound came from upstairs.

A small sound.

A door opening.

Both of us froze.

“Sophie?””

I ran toward the stairs.

“Sophie, sweetheart?””

No answer.

I reached her bedroom.

The door was open.

The lamp was on.

The bed was empty.

My heart stopped.

“Sophie?””

Then I saw her.

Standing by the window.

Holding something in her tiny hand.

I rushed toward her.

“What happened?””

She turned around.

Her face was pale.

“Daddy…”

I knelt beside her.

“What is it?””

She slowly opened her hand.

Inside was an old photograph.

Not the one from Vanessa’s box.

A different one.

A photograph of a man standing outside our house.

A man I had never seen before.

Except I knew exactly who he was.

Because Lily had just sent me his picture.

Daniel Cross.

My hands went numb.

“Sophie,” I whispered.

“Where did you get this?””

She looked toward the closet.

“He came here.””

The room went cold.

“Who came here?””

My daughter’s eyes filled with tears.

“The man Vanessa says we’re never supposed to talk about.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

She was standing in the doorway.

May you like

And for the first time…

she looked more afraid than Sophie.
