Chapter 13: The Woman Who Knew Me First
The sentence stayed in the air.
*I wasn’t your wife yet.*
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not even Sophie.
The rain outside continued hitting the broken windows of the old house, but it sounded distant.
Almost like the world had moved away and left us trapped inside this one impossible moment.
I looked at Vanessa.
The woman who had entered my life after I lost everything.
The woman who became Sophie’s stepmother.
The woman who had always claimed she met me when I was rebuilding my life.
But now…
I was seeing her in a hospital room before Emily disappeared.
Before our marriage.
Before the life I remembered.
“How long did you know me?””
Vanessa looked down.
That was enough to tell me the answer was not simple.
“Vanessa.””
She swallowed.
“Before you woke up.””
My chest tightened.
“Before I woke up from what?””
She looked at the medical report in my hand.
“The accident.””
The word felt strange.
Accident.
Everyone kept using that word.
But nobody believed it.
“What were you doing there?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I was helping Emily.””
Emily looked at her sadly.
“I asked her to.””
I turned.
“You asked her?””
Emily nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at my wife.
“Why?””
“Because I needed someone I could trust.””
I looked between them.
“You trusted Vanessa?””
“Yes.””
That answer shocked me.
Because for the last few hours, Vanessa had been the person I was most suspicious of.
But Emily was looking at her like someone who had saved her life.
“What happened?””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“I met Emily before I met you.””
“How?””
“She found me.””
“Because of Daniel?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew I had access to information about him.””
“And then?””
“She told me you were in danger.””
I frowned.
“Why me?””
Emily looked at the floor.
“Because you were the only person who could bring Daniel down.””
I looked at the documents.
The investigations.
The evidence.
The parts of my life I couldn’t remember.
“So I was involved.””
“Yes.””
“How deeply?””
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
“More than anyone.””
I looked away.
A strange feeling was growing inside me.
Not just anger.
Loss.
Because I was mourning a version of myself I didn’t know existed.
A man who fought.
A man who knew the truth.
A man who trusted Emily enough to risk everything.
“What happened the night I got hurt?””
Vanessa answered.
“I found you.””
I looked at her.
“Where?””
“Near the old warehouse.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What was I doing there?””
“You were meeting Daniel.””
Daniel looked away.
I noticed.
“You knew about the meeting.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice was quiet.
“Because I was trying to stop you.””
I laughed.
“You mean stop me from exposing you.””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Stop you from getting killed.””
The room went silent.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t expect anything from you.””
For the first time, he sounded broken.
Not like a villain.
Like someone who had lost everything and knew he deserved it.
“I made mistakes.””
Lily immediately said:
“Mistakes?””
Her voice cut through the room.
“You call what you did mistakes?””
Daniel looked at his daughter.
“I was trying to survive.””
Lily’s eyes filled with anger.
“We were children.””
The words hit everyone.
“We were children, and you made us pay for your choices.””
Daniel looked down.
And for once…
he had no answer.
I turned back to Vanessa.
“Why did you marry me?””
She looked at me.
A painful silence.
Then:
“Because Emily asked me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
Emily stepped forward.
“I knew I might never come back.””
I stared at her.
“You asked another woman to marry me?””
“No.””
Emily shook her head quickly.
“I asked Vanessa to protect you.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It will.””
She looked at Vanessa.
Vanessa continued.
“When Richard woke up, he didn’t remember the investigation.””
I frowned.
“But I remembered my life.””
“Parts of it.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You remembered your name. Your work. Your family.””
She paused.
“But not Daniel.””
Not Emily.
The words weren’t spoken.
But I heard them.
My heart hurt.
“You’re saying I forgot the person who hurt me.””
“Yes.””
“And the person I loved.””
Emily looked down.
“Yes.””
I walked away from them.
The room suddenly felt too small.
I had spent years grieving a dead wife.
And now she was alive.
I had spent years trusting a woman who was secretly connected to the biggest secret of my life.
I had spent years thinking my memories were complete.
They weren’t.
“What about Sophie?””
Everyone went quiet.
I looked at Emily.
“She was a baby.””
“I know.””
“How could I forget all of this?””
Emily’s face broke.
“Because Daniel wasn’t trying to erase everything.””
She looked at me.
“He was trying to erase the truth.””
Lily opened another folder.
“There’s something you need to see.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She handed me a small envelope.
“This was found after the accident.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My handwriting.
My own handwriting.
The date was five years ago.
Before my accident.
I read the first line.
*If I forget, trust Emily.*
My breath stopped.
I continued.
*If I wake up and I don’t remember what happened, it means someone succeeded in taking the truth away from me.*
My hands shook.
This wasn’t a message from someone else.
This was from me.
*Daniel will tell you he was trying to protect you. Vanessa will tell you she was helping Emily. Both things may be true. But the most dangerous person is the one nobody suspects.*
I stopped.
There was another line.
*The person who caused the accident is not the person you think.*
My heart raced.
I looked around the room.
Everyone was watching me.
I kept reading.
*Richard, if you find this, ask one question.*
The next sentence was underlined.
*Who knew exactly where you would be that night?*
The room became silent.
Slowly, I lowered the letter.
I looked at Daniel.
“You knew where I was.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Emily.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Lily looked away.
Then I realized.
Everyone knew.
Everyone except me.
But there was one person missing.
The person who sent the message.
The person who had been watching.
The person who knew things even Daniel didn’t know.
My phone buzzed.
Everyone froze.
Another message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
*You’re finally asking the right question.*
A second message appeared.
*But you’re still missing one person.*
Then a photograph loaded.
My hands went cold.
It was from the hospital.
The same night.
The same room.
But this time, the picture was clearer.
I saw myself unconscious.
Emily beside me.
Vanessa near the door.
And behind them…
a fourth person.
A person I knew.
A person who had been part of my life for years.
A person I trusted completely.
I stared at the screen.
“No…”
Emily stepped closer.
“What is it?””
I couldn’t speak.
Because the person in the photograph was someone who shouldn’t have been there.
Someone who had no connection to Daniel.
No reason to know Emily.
No reason to know Vanessa.
No reason to know me before my accident.
But they were there.
Standing beside my hospital bed.
Watching me sleep.
I finally whispered the name.
And everyone in the room froze.
Because they knew that name too.
“The doctor.””
Lily’s face went pale.
“What doctor?””
I looked at the photograph.
“The doctor who treated me after the accident.””
Emily stepped closer.
“Richard…”
I looked at her.
“He wasn’t helping me remember.””
May you like
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He was making sure I forgot.””
