Chapter 9: The Last Secret

I didn't go home because I was afraid.

I went home because I was finally done running.

For years, everyone around me had made decisions about my life.

My mother decided what was best.

My husband decided what I deserved to know.

My sister decided when I was ready for the truth.

Even people who claimed to love me had treated me like someone who needed to be protected from reality.

But they were wrong.

I didn't need protection.

I needed the truth.

Lily sat beside me in the car outside my house.

Neither of us moved.

The lights were on inside.

Someone was waiting.

"I don't think you should go in there alone," Lily whispered.

I looked at the house.

The place where I had spent eleven years building a life.

"No.""

I took a breath.

"I shouldn't.""

She looked relieved.

"Then let's call someone.""

I shook my head.

"Not yet.""

"Emma...""

"I need to know what they're hiding.""

Lily looked down.

"You really want all the answers?""

I stared through the windshield.

"I need them.""

We walked inside together.

The moment the door opened, every conversation stopped.

Daniel was sitting in the living room.

My mother-in-law, Victoria, sat beside him.

My parents were there too.

Everyone.

Like they were waiting for a meeting.

Not a family.

A trial.

Victoria stood first.

"Emma.""

I almost laughed.

She said my name with the same warm smile she always used.

The same smile she gave me when she called me the daughter she never had.

"Don't.""

Her expression changed.

"I know you're hurt.""

"Hurt?""

I placed the notebook on the table.

Everyone froze.

"This isn't hurt.""

I opened it.

"This is betrayal.""

Daniel looked at Lily.

"You gave that to her?""

Lily stepped forward.

"She deserved to know.""

Victoria sighed.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

I looked at her.

"Actually, I do.""

I held up the notebook.

"I finally understand.""

Daniel stood.

"Emma, please listen to me.""

I looked at him.

"Why?""

He stopped.

"Why should I listen to you?""

He had no answer.

Because every explanation came too late.

Victoria walked closer.

"You think you know everything because you found some notes?""

I looked at her.

"Then explain them.""

Silence.

"Explain why my husband wrote a plan about marrying me.""

Daniel looked away.

Victoria's face tightened.

That was when I knew.

She knew.

"You were part of this.""

She didn't deny it.

"I was trying to help my son.""

My chest tightened.

"Your son?""

She nodded.

"Daniel had nothing when he met you.""

I stared at her.

"And that gave him the right to use me?""

"No.""

Her voice softened.

"But people make desperate choices.""

I shook my head.

"No. Desperate people ask for help.""

I pointed at Daniel.

"They don't build a fake life.""

Daniel looked devastated.

But I didn't know if it was because he lost me or because he lost control.

"Tell me the truth," I said.

Everyone stayed silent.

So I asked the question that mattered.

"Was any part of our marriage real?""

Daniel looked at me.

His eyes filled with tears.

"Yes.""

I waited.

"At first, I had intentions I shouldn't have had.""

He swallowed.

"But then I fell in love with you.""

I stared at him.

"When?""

He closed his eyes.

"I don't know.""

That answer hurt.

Because love shouldn't be something someone discovers after ruining your life.

"I started seeing the person you were.""

He stepped closer.

"The way you treated people. The way you cared about everyone. The way you believed the best in people.""

I shook my head.

"Don't make me the beautiful part of your ugly story.""

He stopped.

A tear rolled down his face.

"I know I don't deserve forgiveness.""

"No.""

My voice was calm.

"You don't.""

The room became silent.

Then my father spoke.

"Emma, there is something else.""

I turned toward him.

He looked older than he had that morning.

"What?""

He hesitated.

"I knew about the trust.""

I froze.

My father continued.

"But I didn't know Daniel's full plan.""

I stared.

"Everyone knew.""

My voice broke.

"Everyone knew something.""

My father looked down.

"I was trying to fix it.""

I laughed sadly.

"You all keep saying that.""

I picked up the notebook.

"Fixing things while letting me live a lie isn't fixing anything.""

Then I saw something.

A page near the back.

A page I hadn't noticed before.

A handwritten note.

Not Daniel's handwriting.

Someone else's.

I read it.

And my blood went cold.

"Daniel is useful, but he is not the final answer.""

I looked at everyone.

The room went quiet.

Below it was a signature.

A name.

My aunt's name.

I looked at my mother.

"She was involved.""

My mother closed her eyes.

"Emma...""

"No.""

I stepped back.

"This ends tonight.""

I grabbed my coat.

Daniel looked at me.

"Where are you going?""

I looked at him.

"Somewhere nobody can lie to me.""

I walked toward the door.

But before I left, Victoria said something that stopped me.

"Emma.""

I turned.

Her face had changed.

No more fake kindness.

No more pretending.

She looked afraid.

"You don't understand what your aunt did.""

I stared.

"What did she do?""

Victoria whispered:

"She wasn't trying to take your inheritance.""

A pause.

"She was trying to make sure you never received it.""

My heart stopped.

"Why?""

Victoria looked at me.

"Because your grandfather left something else.""

I frowned.

"What?""

May you like

Her voice dropped.

"Proof that your family betrayed him.""
