Chapter 4: The Family That Was Never Honest
I didn't speak for several seconds.
My mother's name repeated in my head like a warning.
"Your mother knew?""
Rachel nodded slowly.
"She contacted Daniel before I left the company.""
I felt my hands tighten around the envelope.
"Why would my mother contact my husband?""
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
"Because she was involved.""
Those two words destroyed whatever hope I had left.
"Involved how?""
Rachel didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at me like she was searching for the least painful way to say something impossible.
"Emma, your family has been hiding things from you for years.""
I shook my head.
"No.""
"You need to hear this.""
"No.""
My voice became louder.
People at nearby tables looked over.
I didn't care.
"My mother is not part of this.""
Rachel's expression softened.
"I wanted to believe that too.""
I froze.
"What does that mean?""
Rachel looked down.
"Daniel told me your mother helped him convince you to sign certain financial documents.""
My heart dropped.
"What documents?""
"Documents connected to your house.""
I stood again.
"You're lying.""
Rachel didn't flinch.
"I wish I was.""
The café suddenly felt too small.
Too crowded.
Too bright.
I walked outside.
Rachel followed.
"Emma, wait.""
I turned around.
"How much of my life is fake?""
She didn't answer.
That silence hurt more than anything.
I drove straight to my mother's house.
I didn't call.
I didn't warn anyone.
I needed to see their faces.
When I walked inside, the house became completely silent.
My father sat in the living room.
Lily was on the couch.
Daniel was standing near the kitchen.
All three looked shocked to see me.
Daniel stepped forward.
"Emma.""
I raised my hand.
"Don't.""
He stopped.
My eyes moved to Lily.
Then my mother.
Then back to Daniel.
"I want the truth.""
Nobody spoke.
My father stood.
"What happened?""
I looked at him.
"Ask your wife.""
My mother's face changed.
Just slightly.
But I saw it.
Fear.
"Emma...""
"No.""
I walked closer.
"How long have you known?""
My mother looked away.
That was enough.
My father stared at her.
"Known what?""
Nobody answered.
I laughed quietly.
"Unbelievable.""
Daniel moved toward me.
"Emma, we can explain.""
I turned toward him.
"Explain what?""
My voice cracked.
"That you betrayed me?""
He looked down.
"Or that you planned to take my house?""
His head snapped up.
"What?""
I watched his face carefully.
For the first time, he looked genuinely surprised.
And I hated that I couldn't tell if it was real.
My father looked confused.
"What is she talking about?""
I placed the envelope on the table.
"Ask Daniel.""
Nobody moved.
My mother slowly reached for the papers.
Daniel stopped her.
"Don't.""
That one word changed everything.
My father's eyes narrowed.
"Why don't you want her to look?""
Daniel stayed silent.
Lily started crying.
"Please stop fighting.""
I looked at her.
"Stop fighting?""
My voice trembled.
"You helped destroy my marriage.""
She covered her face.
"I never wanted to hurt you.""
"But you did.""
The room fell silent.
Then my father picked up the papers.
He read them.
His expression changed.
"Daniel.""
Daniel looked away.
My father threw the papers onto the table.
"You were planning this?""
"I wasn't.""
"Then explain.""
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the answer.
My mother suddenly started crying.
"I can fix this.""
Everyone turned toward her.
I stared.
"What did you say?""
She wiped her tears.
"I can fix it.""
My father looked at her.
"How?""
She hesitated.
Then she said something that made everyone freeze.
"Because Daniel isn't the only person who made a mistake.""
My heart stopped.
"What does that mean?""
She looked at me.
And for the first time in my life, I saw fear in my mother's eyes.
"Emma...""
I stepped back.
"What?""
She whispered:
"Your father isn't the only man who could be the baby's father.""
The room exploded into chaos.
My father stared at her.
Lily covered her mouth.
Daniel went completely pale.
And I realized something terrifying.
The dinner confession wasn't the biggest betrayal.
It was only the first secret that came out.
Because my family wasn't hiding one affair.
They were hiding an entire web of lies.

And standing in the middle of it all was the one person nobody had questioned yet.
Daniel.
