Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
I spent the entire night sitting in my car outside a hotel three miles away from my house.
I couldn't bring myself to go home.
Not because I didn't have a key.
Because I didn't know if that place belonged to me anymore.
The walls that held my wedding photos, the couch where Daniel and I watched movies every Friday night, the kitchen where we cooked together — suddenly everything felt like evidence from a life that had already ended.
At 6:17 in the morning, I finally looked at the message again.
"I know what Daniel did before tonight, and your sister isn't the only secret he has been hiding.""
My fingers hovered over the screen.
I wanted to delete it.
I wanted to believe it was some cruel prank.
But deep down, I already knew Daniel had more secrets.
People who have nothing to hide don't sit silently while their wife discovers betrayal at a dinner table.
I replied.
"Who are you?""
The answer came almost instantly.
"Someone who tried to warn you.""
My heart tightened.
"Warn me about what?""
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally, the message came.
"Meet me at the Willow Café at 10 a.m. Come alone.""
I stared at those words for several minutes.
Every instinct told me not to go.
But another part of me — the part that needed answers — refused to let this end.
At 9:55, I walked into the café.
The smell of coffee and fresh bread filled the room. People laughed quietly at tables around me, completely unaware that my entire world had fallen apart less than twelve hours earlier.
I saw her immediately.
A woman sitting in the corner.
Mid-fifties.
Dark hair pulled back.
Nervous eyes.
She stood when she saw me.
"Emma?""
I nodded.
"Who are you?""
She looked around before sitting down.
"My name is Rachel.""
I waited.
She took a deep breath.
"I used to work with Daniel.""
The name alone made my chest tighten.
"Work with him where?""
She looked down.
"At his company.""
I sat back.
"What does that have to do with anything?""
Rachel's expression changed.
Like she was trying to decide how much truth I could handle.
"Daniel didn't start with your sister.""
The room suddenly felt colder.
"What?""
She folded her hands together.
"Your husband has been lying to you for a long time.""
I shook my head.
"No. If you know something, say it.""
Rachel looked at me.
"I saw him with Lily months ago.""
My stomach dropped.
"Months?""
She nodded.
"They weren't hiding very well. I thought you knew.""
I felt my fingers go numb.
"Why would you think I knew?""
"Because Daniel told people you and him had an open marriage.""
I stared at her.
For a second, I couldn't understand the sentence.
Then anger replaced confusion.
"He said what?""
Rachel looked uncomfortable.
"He told some people that your marriage was complicated. That you both had agreed to see other people.""
I laughed.
A sharp, broken sound.
"That's a lie.""
"I know.""
The certainty in her voice made me look up.
"You know?""
Rachel nodded.
"Because I heard him say something else.""
"What?""
She hesitated.
"He told someone that you would never leave him.""
My jaw tightened.
"Who?""
Rachel looked toward the window.
"His business partner.""
I felt a wave of disgust.
Daniel wasn't just cheating.
He was confident I was too weak to walk away.
"He said I would never leave him?""
Rachel nodded.
"He said you loved him too much.""
I looked down at the table.
That sentence hurt more than I expected.
Not because it was true.
Because for years, maybe it had been.
I had defended Daniel.
I had made excuses.
I had forgiven things I shouldn't have.
But hearing that he counted on my forgiveness made something inside me change.
"What else do you know?""
Rachel reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
"I wasn't sure if I should give you this.""
I stared at it.
"What is it?""
"Something I found after Daniel fired me.""
My eyes narrowed.
"Why did he fire you?""
Her face became serious.
"Because I asked questions.""
She pushed the envelope across the table.
I didn't touch it.
"What's inside?""
"Proof that Daniel has been moving money without your knowledge.""
My heart stopped.
"What kind of money?""
Rachel looked directly at me.
"Your money.""
I felt my breathing become shallow.
"No.""
"Emma...""
"No.""
I stood up.
"You don't know what you're talking about.""
Rachel didn't move.
"I hoped I was wrong.""
I looked at her.
"But?""
She lowered her voice.
"But Daniel isn't just hiding affairs.""
A silence passed between us.
"He has been preparing for the day you leave.""
My blood went cold.
I slowly sat back down.
"What does that mean?""
Rachel pushed the envelope closer.
"It means your husband wasn't trying to protect his marriage.""
She looked at me with sadness.
"He was protecting himself.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside were printed pages.
Numbers.
Dates.
Names.
I didn't understand everything.
But one name caught my attention.
My own.
Emma Carter.
And underneath it was a line that made my hands shake.
"Transfer scheduled after separation.""
I looked up.
"Rachel...""
She leaned forward.
"There's one more thing you need to know.""
"What?""
Her face turned pale.
"The baby your sister is carrying...""
She paused.
"What about it?""
Rachel swallowed.
"Daniel wasn't the one who told me about it.""
I frowned.
"Then who did?""
Rachel looked toward the café entrance.
May you like
And whispered:
"Your mother.""
