Chapter 6: The Marriage That Was a Plan

I wish I could say I was surprised.

I wish I could say the moment Richard revealed Daniel's secret, everything suddenly made sense.

But the truth was worse.

A part of me had always felt something was missing.

A strange distance.

A feeling that Daniel loved the version of me he benefited from.

Not the real me.

I looked at my husband.

"Tell me he's lying.""

Daniel didn't answer.

That silence destroyed me.

"Tell me.""

His eyes filled with regret.

"Emma...""

"No.""

My voice shook.

"I gave you one chance.""

I stepped closer.

"One chance to tell me the truth before I heard it from someone else.""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I did love you.""

I almost laughed.

"Did?""

He looked at me.

"I do love you.""

"Then why?""

He didn't answer.

Because there was no answer that could make it better.

My father looked at Daniel with disgust.

"You used my daughter.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

"Then explain.""

Daniel rubbed his face.

"I made mistakes.""

Again.

That word.

Mistakes.

I felt anger rising.

"You keep calling everything a mistake.""

I pointed around the room.

"My sister's baby. My mother's secret. The money. Our marriage.""

My voice broke.

"At what point does a mistake become who you are?""

Nobody spoke.

Richard slowly walked toward the table.

"I warned you about him.""

I looked at Richard.

"You knew?""

He nodded.

"I suspected.""

"Then why didn't you tell me?""

His expression changed.

"Because I wasn't sure.""

I stared at him.

"So you watched me marry him anyway?""

Richard looked away.

"I thought I was wrong.""

I shook my head.

"Everyone thought they were wrong.""

I looked around the room.

"Everyone saw something.""

My sister.

My mother.

Richard.

Even Daniel's coworkers.

Everyone knew pieces of the truth.

Everyone except me.

Daniel stepped toward me.

"Emma, please.""

I moved back.

"Don't come closer.""

He stopped.

"I made mistakes before we got married.""

The room went silent.

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked terrified.

"I didn't start our relationship with the right intentions.""

My chest tightened.

"But somewhere along the way, things changed.""

I looked at him.

"When?""

He didn't answer.

"When did you start loving me?""

Daniel closed his eyes.

And that pause was enough.

Because there was a time before love.

A time when I was just a plan.

I walked toward the hallway.

My legs felt weak.

Behind me, I heard my mother crying.

My father yelling.

Daniel calling my name.

But it all sounded far away.

I went into my old bedroom.

The room where I used to dream about my future.

The walls still had pictures from when I was younger.

A graduation photo.

A picture of me and Lily as children.

A photo of my wedding day.

I stared at that wedding picture for a long time.

I remembered Daniel's face.

The smile.

The promise.

"Forever.""

The word felt meaningless now.

My phone buzzed.

I looked down.

Another message.

This time from Rachel.

"Emma, I found something else.""

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

Not a phone screenshot.

Not a document.

A picture of a meeting.

Daniel sitting across from someone.

Someone I recognized.

My mother.

The date was from three years earlier.

A year before my wedding.

The message below said:

"Your husband and your mother knew each other before you ever introduced them.""

I stared at the photo.

Three years earlier.

Before the wedding.

Before the promises.

Before I thought I had found my forever.

Then another message arrived.

"Emma, there is one thing I didn't tell you.""

I swallowed.

"What?""

The reply appeared.

"Daniel wasn't the person who planned your marriage.""

I stared at the words.

My heart began racing.

Another message followed.

"The person who introduced him to you was someone inside your own family.""

I looked up slowly.

Outside the bedroom door, I heard footsteps approaching.

Someone was coming.

Someone who had been hiding the truth from me since the beginning.

The door handle started to turn.

May you like

And then I heard my sister's voice.

"Emma... please let me explain why I did it.""
