Chapter 5: The Truth Behind Closed Doors

I thought there was a limit to how much a person could be betrayed in one lifetime.

I was wrong.

Because standing in my childhood home, surrounded by the people who were supposed to love me most, I realized something terrifying.

The truth was not one painful thing.

It was a thousand small lies finally coming together.

My father stared at my mother like he was looking at a stranger.

"What did you just say?""

My mother's face was covered in tears.

"I didn't want this to happen.""

My father's voice rose.

"No. You don't get to say that. You don't get to stand there and act like this happened to you.""

Lily started crying.

"Everyone please stop.""

Nobody listened.

And I couldn't move.

I was stuck watching the people who raised me destroy each other.

But the question burning inside me wasn't about my parents.

It was about Daniel.

I turned toward him.

He was standing near the kitchen counter, completely silent.

Too silent.

"Why aren't you surprised?""

Everyone stopped.

Daniel looked at me.

"What?""

I walked closer.

"My mother just suggested that the baby might not be my father's, and you are standing there like you already knew.""

His face changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

"You knew," I whispered.

"Emma, no.""

"You knew.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not everything.""

That answer hurt more than a confession.

Because it meant there was something.

Something he still wasn't telling me.

My father stepped toward him.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked away.

My father grabbed the back of a chair.

"You better start talking.""

Daniel sighed.

"I found out something a few weeks ago.""

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course you did.""

He looked at me.

"Emma...""

"No. Keep going.""

Daniel swallowed.

"Your mother came to me.""

The room went silent.

My mother closed her eyes.

I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.

"Why?""

Daniel hesitated.

"She wanted help.""

"Help with what?""

Nobody answered.

My voice became sharper.

"Help with what?""

Daniel looked at my mother.

Then back at me.

"She was scared.""

My mother whispered.

"Daniel, don't.""

I turned toward her.

"Don't what?""

Her silence confirmed everything.

"You went to my husband?""

She started crying.

"I didn't know who else to talk to.""

I stared at her.

"You could have talked to me.""

"I was ashamed.""

"Of what?""

My mother looked down.

That was when my father spoke.

"Tell her.""

My mother looked at him.

He nodded slowly.

"Tell our daughter the truth.""

A long silence filled the room.

Then my mother sat down.

"I had been sick for months.""

I frowned.

"What?""

She wiped her eyes.

"I didn't tell anyone because I didn't want to become a burden.""

I felt a small crack in my anger.

But only for a second.

Because then she continued.

"And during that time... I made a terrible choice.""

My stomach tightened.

"With who?""

She didn't answer.

Daniel did.

"Someone from her past.""

I looked at him.

"How do you know?""

"Because she told me.""

My mother covered her face.

I felt numb.

My entire family had become strangers in front of me.

"Who was he?""

Nobody spoke.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man stood there.

Older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

A person I recognized immediately.

I had seen him at family gatherings before.

My father's old friend.

Richard Hayes.

My heart stopped.

"What is he doing here?""

Richard looked around the room.

His eyes landed on my mother.

Then me.

"I guess everyone knows now.""

My father stepped forward.

"You.""

Richard didn't move.

"I didn't want it to come out like this.""

My father laughed.

A broken laugh.

"You came into my house?""

Richard looked down.

"I came because Emma deserves the truth.""

I stared at him.

"The truth about what?""

He looked at Daniel.

Then my mother.

Then me.

"About why Daniel married you.""

The room went completely silent.

I felt cold.

"What?""

Richard took a breath.

"Emma, your husband didn't meet you by accident.""

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

"Stop.""

Richard ignored him.

"He knew exactly who you were.""

My mind raced.

"What are you saying?""

Richard looked at me with pity.

"He knew about your family money. He knew about your inheritance. He knew everything.""

I turned toward Daniel.

"No.""

Daniel looked desperate.

"Emma, listen to me.""

But Richard continued.

"He didn't fall in love with you.""

May you like

My heart broke before I even heard the next words.

"He chose you.""
