Chapter 8: The Person Behind the Plan
I couldn't turn the page.
My fingers refused to move.
Because somewhere inside me, a small part still hoped there was an explanation.
A misunderstanding.
A mistake.
Anything.
But the words were right there.
Written in Daniel's own handwriting.
"Step One: Marry Emma Carter.""
Lily stood beside me, crying silently.
I looked at her.
"How long have you known about this?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't know about the notebook.""
"But you knew enough.""
She looked down.
"Yes.""
I closed the notebook.
"Why bring me here now?""
Lily looked at the floor.
"Because I finally realized something.""
"What?""
"Daniel never loved either of us.""
The sentence stayed in the air.
And somehow, hearing it made everything hurt differently.
Because Lily wasn't defending herself anymore.
She wasn't asking for forgiveness.
She was finally admitting the truth.
We searched through the boxes.
Every item felt like another piece of my life being stolen.
There were copies of financial records.
Photos of my house.
Notes about my family.
And then I found a folder with my name.
Emma Carter.
Inside were details about my childhood.
My education.
My inheritance.
My habits.
Things nobody outside my family should have known.
I looked at Lily.
"Where did he get this?""
She shook her head.
"I don't know.""
A cold feeling moved through me.
Because I did.
Only one person could have given him that information.
My mother.
I grabbed my phone.
I called her.
She answered after three rings.
"Emma?""
Her voice sounded exhausted.
"Did you help Daniel plan my marriage?""
Silence.
That silence was the answer.
My eyes closed.
"Mom.""
She started crying.
"I wanted to protect you.""
I almost dropped the phone.
"Protect me?""
"Emma, listen—"
"No.""
My voice shook.
"You don't get to say that anymore.""
She was quiet.
"How could you?""
"I thought I was helping you.""
"Helping me marry someone who never loved me?""
"No.""
Her voice became desperate.
"I thought he would learn to love you.""
I felt numb.
"You knew?""
"Not everything.""
"But enough.""
Another silence.
Then she whispered:
"I made a terrible decision.""
I looked around the storage unit.
At all the evidence of my ruined life.
"Why?""
My mother cried.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Afraid of what?""
She took a shaky breath.
"Your father was losing everything.""
I frowned.
"What does Dad have to do with this?""
"Your grandfather's trust was supposed to save the family business.""
I froze.
The pieces connected.
"Daniel married me for money.""
My mother didn't deny it.
"At first.""
I felt sick.
"At first?""
She cried harder.
"I swear I never wanted this.""
I looked at Lily.
She was staring at me.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.
"Who introduced Daniel to you?""
My mother went silent.
Too long.
"Mom.""
Finally, she answered.
"It wasn't me.""
My heart stopped.
"What?""
"He came to us.""
"Who is us?""
My mother's breathing changed.
Like she was afraid.
"Emma...""
"Who?""
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
"Your aunt.""
I froze.
"My aunt?""
"She knew about your grandfather's money before anyone else.""
I grabbed the edge of the table.
"Why would my aunt do that?""
My mother didn't answer.
"Mom.""
Her voice broke.
"Because she believed you didn't deserve it.""
The line went silent.
I stared at the notebook.
At the carefully written plan.
At the years of manipulation.
Then my phone buzzed.
A new message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
One sentence.
"Stop searching, Emma.""
My blood ran cold.
Another message appeared.
"You have no idea who you are fighting.""
I showed Lily.
Her face changed.
"What?""
I looked at her.
"You know this number?""
She slowly nodded.
And whispered:
"Yes.""
"Who is it?""
Lily stepped back.
Her voice barely came out.
"It's Daniel's mother.""
I stared at the screen.
Daniel's mother.
The woman who had always smiled at me.
The woman who called me daughter.
The woman who hugged me at my wedding.
Then another message arrived.
This time, there was a photo attached.
A photo of my house.
Taken from outside.
Taken that morning.
Underneath it were six words.
"Come home if you want answers.""
I looked at Lily.
And for the first time that night, I realized something.
The person who destroyed my marriage was never just Daniel.
May you like
He was only one piece of something much bigger.
And whoever was controlling the game was still watching.
