Chapter 7: My Sister’s Final Confession
I didn't open the door.
For several seconds, I just stood there, staring at the handle as it slowly stopped moving.
Lily was on the other side.
The same sister who used to crawl into my bed when thunderstorms scared her.
The same sister who once told me I was the only person in the world she could trust.
And now she was standing outside my bedroom, asking me to believe her again.
I wiped my tears.
Not because I was okay.
Because I was tired of crying for people who kept choosing to hurt me.
"Emma," Lily whispered.
"Please.""
I stayed silent.
"I know you hate me.""
My hand tightened.
"No.""
The words came out quietly.
"I don't hate you.""
A pause.
"I wish I did.""
The hallway went silent.
Then I heard her crying.
"I deserve that.""
I opened the door.
Lily stood there with red eyes and a face that looked nothing like the confident girl who sat across from me at dinner.
She looked broken.
But I had learned something that night.
Broken people could still break others.
"Why?"" I asked.
She looked down.
"Because I was jealous.""
The answer was so simple that it almost hurt more.
"Jealous?""
She nodded.
"Of you.""
I stared at her.
"Of me?""
Lily wiped her cheeks.
"You always had everything.""
I almost laughed.
"Everything?""
She nodded.
"You were the successful one. The one everyone praised. The one Dad trusted. The one Mom always talked about.""
I shook my head.
"You think my life was perfect?""
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"But it looked perfect.""
I looked away.
For years, I had protected Lily because I thought she needed me.
I never realized she was quietly comparing herself to me.
"I never wanted Daniel to hurt you," she whispered.
"But you knew he was married.""
She closed her eyes.
"Yes.""
"Then you did want to hurt me.""
"No.""
She looked at me desperately.
"I wanted him to choose me.""
The words hung between us.
I felt something inside me break.
Not because I loved Daniel anymore.
Because I finally understood how little my sister thought of me.
"You wanted my husband.""
Lily looked down.
"I thought he loved me.""
I stared at her.
"He told you that?""
She hesitated.
That hesitation made my stomach turn.
"What did he tell you?""
Lily sat on the edge of the bed.
"He told me he was trapped.""
My expression hardened.
"Trapped?""
She nodded.
"He said he married you because of your family's expectations. He said he felt guilty leaving because everyone would judge him.""
I felt sick.
The same man who told me I was his greatest blessing had been telling my sister I was his prison.
"When did this start?""
Lily didn't answer.
"Lily.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Before your wedding.""
I froze.
The room felt like it stopped moving.
"Before?""
She nodded.
"We met before you introduced us.""
I stepped back.
"You knew him before I brought him home?""
"Yes.""
I couldn't believe it.
"How?""
She looked at the floor.
"Mom introduced us.""
My breath caught.
"What?""
Lily covered her face.
"She thought I was better suited for him.""
The pain that followed wasn't anger.
It was something colder.
My own mother.
My own sister.
My own husband.
All connected.
"You all planned this?""
"No.""
Lily shook her head quickly.
"It wasn't like that.""
"Then what was it like?""
She couldn't answer.
I walked toward the window.
The world outside looked normal.
Cars passing.
People walking.
Neighbors living ordinary lives.
Nobody knew that my family had collapsed in one night.
"Why did Daniel marry me?""
Lily was quiet.
Then she said:
"Because Mom convinced him.""
I turned around.
"What?""
"She told him you were the only one who could secure his future.""
My heart sank.
"My future?""
Lily nodded.
"Your grandfather's trust.""
Everything suddenly became clear.
The money.
The documents.
The planning.
The marriage.
Daniel didn't accidentally enter my life.
He was placed there.
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Lily cried.
"Because by the time I realized what was happening, you were already married.""
"You had years.""
"I was scared.""
I looked at her.
"Everyone was scared.""
A silence followed.
Then Lily reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small key.
"I have something.""
I didn't move.
"What is it?""
"A storage box.""
I frowned.
"Whose?""
She looked at me.
"Daniel's.""
My heart started beating faster.
"How do you have it?""
"Because he trusted me.""
She looked ashamed.
"He didn't think I would ever betray him.""
I stared at the key.
"What's inside?""
Lily swallowed.
"Everything.""
I didn't take it.
Not yet.
Because I already knew whatever was inside would destroy whatever was left.
"What are you going to do?""
Lily looked at me.
"Give you the truth.""
For the first time all night, I believed her.
Not because she deserved my trust.
Because I needed answers.
We left the house without telling anyone.
The storage facility was twenty minutes away.
The entire drive was silent.
When we arrived, Lily led me through rows of locked doors until we reached one at the end.
Unit 317.
She inserted the key.
The lock clicked.
The door rolled open.
Inside were boxes.
Dozens of them.
I walked in slowly.
There were old files.
Photos.
Letters.
And a small black notebook sitting on top of a table.
Lily picked it up.
"Emma...""
"What?""
She looked terrified.
"He wrote everything down.""
I opened the notebook.
The first page had one sentence.
A sentence that made my hands shake.
"Step One: Marry Emma Carter.""
I looked at Lily.
Then back at the notebook.
The next page had a date.
A date from before I ever met Daniel.
May you like
And underneath it were four words.
"Find her weakness first.""
