Chapter 2: The Secret Under the Table

I don't remember standing there.

I don't remember breathing.

I only remember staring at my mother's hand resting over her stomach and wondering if my entire life had been some kind of cruel joke.

"What did you just say?"" I whispered.

Nobody answered.

My mother looked away.

Daniel looked terrified.

And that was the moment I realized something even worse than the betrayal.

They had all known.

Maybe not my father.

Maybe not me.

But someone had known.

Someone had been protecting secrets while I sat at that table believing I was surrounded by family.

My father slowly stood.

"Linda.""

My mother's face crumpled.

"Please don't make this worse.""

"Worse?""

His voice shook.

"You think there is a word for this that makes it worse?""

My sister started crying again.

"I didn't know how to tell everyone.""

I turned toward her.

"You didn't know how to tell me?""

She looked at me.

And for a second, I saw the little girl I used to protect.

The little girl who slept in my room during thunderstorms.

The little girl who called me when she got her first heartbreak.

Then I remembered the woman sitting in front of me.

The woman who had taken the one person she knew I trusted.

"You could have told me the truth before you destroyed my life.""

"I was scared," Lily whispered.

I shook my head.

"No. You were scared of consequences.""

Daniel finally stepped forward.

"Emma, listen.""

I looked at him.

"Don't.""

"Please.""

"Don't say please like you still have the right to ask me for anything.""

His face fell.

I wanted to hate him.

I wanted to scream.

But the worst part was that my mind kept remembering the good moments.

Our first apartment.

Our wedding day.

The night he held our newborn nephew and told me he couldn't wait to become a father someday.

Every memory felt fake now.

"How long?"" I asked.

Daniel didn't answer.

"How long has this been happening?""

Silence.

That silence was my answer.

I looked at my mother.

Then Lily.

Then Daniel.

Three people.

Three people who had looked me in the eyes while hiding the truth.

My father walked toward Daniel.

"You were supposed to be my son.""

Daniel lowered his head.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My father pointed toward the door.

"You don't know what family means.""

My mother started crying harder.

"Please, everyone needs to calm down.""

I turned toward her.

"Calm down?""

My voice broke.

"You are asking me to calm down?""

She couldn't look at me.

"I made a terrible mistake.""

I stared at her.

"A mistake?""

The same word again.

Everyone used it like it could make the pain smaller.

Like betrayal became acceptable if they gave it a softer name.

I grabbed my purse from the chair.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Where are you going?""

I looked at him.

"Somewhere I don't have to pretend.""

"Emma...""

I stopped at the doorway.

For one second, I thought maybe he would finally say something real.

Something that showed he understood what he had done.

Instead, he whispered:

"I never wanted to hurt you.""

I turned around slowly.

"Then why did you keep doing things that would?""

He had no answer.

I walked outside.

The cold air hit my face, but I barely felt it.

I sat in my car with both hands gripping the steering wheel.

I couldn't cry.

Not yet.

The pain was too big.

My phone started ringing.

I looked down.

It was my best friend, Sarah.

I answered.

"Emma? Why are you calling me crying? What happened?""

I opened my mouth.

But before I could speak, another notification appeared.

A message from an unknown number.

My hands froze.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

"I know what Daniel did before tonight, and your sister isn't the only secret he has been hiding.""

My heart started racing.

I stared at the message again.

Then another line appeared.

"Meet me tomorrow if you want the truth about your husband.""

I looked back toward the house where my entire family was still sitting together.

May you like

And for the first time that night, I wondered if the dinner I walked away from wasn't the beginning of the disaster.

Maybe it was only the moment someone finally decided to reveal it.
