Chapter 9: The Memory I Buried Myself

I stared at the handwriting on the paper.

My handwriting.

The same uneven letters I used when I signed birthday cards for Lily. The same way I wrote grocery lists on the kitchen counter.

But I had no memory of writing those words.

No memory of that night.

No memory of the truth I had apparently hidden from myself.

My hands trembled as I unfolded the paper.

Claire stepped closer.

“Ethan…”

I looked at her.

“Did you know about this?””

Her face told me everything.

She knew.

Not everything.

But enough.

“You knew I wrote this.””

Claire looked down.

“I knew you left yourself messages.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Victor sat down slowly.

“You really don’t remember.””

I looked between them.

“Remember what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Rachel spoke through the phone.

“Ethan, read the letter.””

I looked at the paper again.

The first line felt impossible.

If you are reading this, it means I forgot the truth again.

I swallowed.

Then I continued.

My name is Ethan Carter. If I don’t remember writing this, it means Marcus succeeded.

My breathing stopped.

Do not trust the memories you have. They were changed.

The room became silent.

I looked at Claire.

“What does this mean?””

She looked devastated.

“It means you tried to protect yourself.””

“From who?””

Rachel answered.

“From Marcus.””

I kept reading.

Eight years ago, I discovered what Marcus was doing. I found proof. I confronted him.

My eyes moved across the page.

He knew I had evidence. He knew I could destroy everything he built.

My hands shook.

But I made one mistake.

I turned the page.

There was only one sentence.

I trusted someone who was afraid.

I looked up.

“Who?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Claire whispered:

“Me.””

My chest tightened.

“Claire?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t betray you.””

“Then what happened?””

She looked at Rachel.

“I was scared.””

Rachel’s voice softened.

“Claire saved Ethan’s life.””

I stared at the phone.

“Then why does the letter blame you?””

Claire wiped her tears.

“Because I made the choice that changed everything.””

“What choice?””

She took a deep breath.

“The night Marcus came after you… I gave him something.””

My anger returned.

“What?””

“Your memories.””

The room went completely still.

I stared at her.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

Victor spoke quietly.

“It isn’t.””

I looked at him.

“You expect me to believe someone erased my memory?””

Victor nodded.

“Marcus had access to people who specialized in manipulation.””

My mind felt like it was breaking.

“But why would I agree?””

Claire closed her eyes.

“Because you thought it was the only way to protect Lily.””

I looked at my daughter.

The little girl who had unknowingly carried the key to the truth.

Rachel spoke.

“Marcus threatened everyone.””

She paused.

“He told Ethan he would take Lily if he didn’t disappear.””

My throat tightened.

“So I chose to forget?””

Claire nodded.

“You chose to lose your memories instead of losing your daughter.””

I looked at Lily.

Suddenly, memories started appearing.

Not complete.

Not clear.

A hospital hallway.

A crying baby.

Claire holding my hand.

A man shouting.

A photograph.

A promise.

I grabbed my head.

Images flashed.

Marcus.

A basement.

A conversation.

A hidden file.

Then one memory became clear.

Me standing in front of Claire.

Holding Lily.

Saying:

“Make sure she never knows.””

I opened my eyes.

Everyone was watching me.

“What did I say?””

Claire stepped closer.

“You remembered?””

I looked at her.

“I told you to hide her.””

Claire nodded.

“Because Marcus believed Lily was the only child.””

I looked at Sophie.

“And Sophie?””

Rachel answered.

“She was the insurance.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Rachel explained.

“Marcus thought if he couldn’t find Lily, he could use Sophie to force me out.””

My heart broke.

A child had been treated like a weapon.

A bargaining piece.

A secret.

Then the basement door suddenly opened.

Everyone turned.

A police officer stood there.

Behind him was Marcus.

But he wasn’t smiling anymore.

He looked exhausted.

Defeated.

The officer stepped forward.

“Ethan Carter?””

“Yes.””

“We need you to come with us.””

My body tensed.

“Why?””

The officer looked at Marcus.

“Because he gave himself up.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked at Sophie.

Then Lily.

“I never wanted this.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?””

Marcus looked down.

“No.””

For the first time, he looked human.

“I made terrible choices.””

Claire stared at him.

“Where is the second baby?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at Sophie.

“I thought she was gone.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Marcus looked confused.

“I thought both girls were gone.””

Rachel’s voice cracked through the phone.

“Then who took her?””

Marcus looked toward the photograph.

And his expression changed.

Because he realized something.

Something nobody else knew.

“I didn’t take the second child.””

Silence.

“Someone else did.””

I looked at Claire.

Then Victor.

Then Rachel.

“Who?””

Marcus slowly shook his head.

“I don’t know.””

The officer stepped forward.

“Ethan, we found something else.””

He handed me a folder.

Inside was a recent photograph.

A girl.

About the same age as Sophie.

Standing outside a house.

A girl with the same birthmark.

I stared.

“No…”

The officer looked at me.

“Do you know her?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I did.

Somewhere deep inside.

I remembered.

And the memory terrified me.

May you like

Because the girl in the photograph wasn’t a stranger.

She was the child I had spent eight years believing was gone.
