Chapter 7: The Choice Claire Made Eight Years Ago

Marcus’s words stayed in the air long after he disappeared.

*“Ask Claire why she was the one who made me disappear eight years ago.””*

I wanted to chase after him.

I wanted answers.

I wanted someone in that room to finally tell me the complete truth instead of another carefully chosen piece.

But then I looked at Lily.

And Sophie.

Two little girls standing in the middle of a nightmare created by adults.

My anger had to wait.

“Everyone sits down,” I said.

Nobody argued.

Not even Claire.

The basement suddenly felt too small for all the secrets inside it.

Claire sat on the old wooden chair.

Her hands were shaking.

I stood across from her.

“Start talking.””

She looked at me.

“I know you hate me right now.””

“I don’t know what I feel.””

That was the truth.

Because hate was simple.

This wasn’t.

“I feel like I’ve been married to a stranger.””

Claire closed her eyes.

“I understand.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice broke.

“I trusted you with everything.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe Lily was our only child.””

“She is your daughter.””

“I never said she wasn’t.””

The words came out faster than I intended.

“But now I find out there was another child. A hidden room. A man watching our family. And everyone knew something except me.””

Claire looked down.

“I was scared.””

I shook my head.

“Everyone says that.””

She looked up.

“Because it’s true.””

The sadness in her voice stopped me for a moment.

“I was scared of losing you.””

“Why?””

“Because eight years ago, I lost almost everything.””

She took a deep breath.

“Rachel wasn’t just my sister. She was my best friend.””

The basement became quiet.

“When she got pregnant, Marcus was already controlling her life. He told her what to wear, who to talk to, where to go.””

Victor looked away.

“I should have stopped him sooner.””

Claire continued.

“When Sophie was born, Rachel tried to leave him.””

“And that’s when everything happened?””

Claire nodded.

“She came to me in the middle of the night.””

She looked at Sophie.

“She was holding Sophie.””

Sophie listened carefully.

“Rachel was terrified. She told me Marcus had found out about the plan to leave.””

Claire’s voice became softer.

“She said if he found her, he would take Sophie away.””

I looked at Sophie.

“And the second baby?””

Claire swallowed.

“Rachel was pregnant again.””

My heart tightened.

“She didn’t even know it was twins at first.””

“She found out later?””

Claire nodded.

“She gave birth to both girls.””

I looked at Lily.

“And Marcus knew?””

“He knew about one baby.””

Victor finally spoke.

“Marcus believed the second baby was gone.””

I looked at him.

“How?””

Victor sighed.

“Because Claire made sure he believed that.””

The room went silent.

I looked at my wife.

“What did you do?””

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

She looked at Sophie.

“Rachel was running. Marcus was looking for them. She knew she couldn’t protect both babies.””

My stomach sank.

“So she gave one to you?””

Claire nodded.

“She begged me.””

A tear rolled down her cheek.

“She told me to take Lily and disappear.””

I stared at her.

“Lily?””

Claire nodded.

“Your daughter was the baby Rachel trusted me with.””

The words hit me.

“My daughter…”

“Yes.””

Claire looked at me.

“Lily is yours.””

I looked at my daughter.

Everything suddenly felt different.

The tiny details.

The little habits.

The way she smiled.

The way she held my hand.

She was still my little girl.

But the story behind her was something I never knew.

“Then why did you hide Sophie?””

Claire looked broken.

“Because Marcus found out Sophie existed.””

“But not Lily?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“He thought Lily was gone.””

I looked toward Victor.

“And you?””

Victor lowered his eyes.

“I helped Claire create a false trail.””

I stared at him.

“You helped hide my daughter’s existence.””

“Yes.””

“Why should I believe anything you say?””

“You shouldn’t.””

That answer surprised me.

Victor looked exhausted.

“I made mistakes. I trusted my brother. I thought I could control him.””

He looked at Sophie.

“I was wrong.””

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone stopped.

Another noise.

A door opening.

My body tensed.

“Did Marcus come back?””

Victor shook his head.

“No.””

“Then who?””

Claire suddenly stood.

Her face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“He wasn’t alone.””

The words made the room freeze.

I grabbed the flashlight.

“Who else is here?””

Claire didn’t answer.

She looked terrified.

Then Sophie whispered:

“Someone else knows.””

A shadow moved across the basement window.

Not Marcus.

Someone younger.

Someone watching.

I moved closer.

The shadow disappeared.

Then my phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

Everyone stared.

I answered.

At first, there was only breathing.

Then a woman’s voice.

A voice I had never heard before.

“Ethan?””

I froze.

“How do you know my name?””

The woman started crying.

“Because I’ve been trying to find you for eight years.””

My heart raced.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m Rachel.””

I couldn’t speak.

Claire covered her mouth.

Victor whispered:

“No…”

The woman continued.

“Please listen to me. You have to get the girls away from Claire.””

I looked at my wife.

“What?””

May you like

Rachel’s voice became urgent.

“She never told you what really happened the night I disappeared.””
