Chapter 3: The Man Who Knew Her Secret

The sound of the front door handle moving felt louder than any scream.

I stood frozen in the hallway.

Behind me, Sophie had curled herself into the corner of the room, clutching the old photograph against her chest. Lily was holding onto my shirt, confused and frightened.

And Claire…

Claire looked like she had seen a ghost.

“Ethan,” she whispered.

I turned toward her.

“Who is outside?””

Her lips trembled.

“I never wanted you to meet him.””

That answer sent a chill through me.

Not because I knew who he was.

Because I suddenly realized Claire had been living with a secret so large that she had built an entire second life around it.

The door handle stopped moving.

Then came a voice.

“Claire.””

A man.

Calm.

Confident.

Like he belonged there.

“Open the door. We need to talk.””

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Please.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Please what?””

“Don’t let him see Sophie.””

My stomach tightened.

“You’re still protecting him?””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“I’m protecting her.””

The lock clicked.

Someone outside had a key.

I stepped in front of the girls.

The front door opened slowly.

A man in his late forties walked inside.

He wore a dark jacket and expensive shoes. His hair was neatly trimmed, his expression controlled.

But when he looked past me and saw the broken closet panel, his confidence disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

He knew.

“Who are you?”” I asked.

The man looked at Claire.

Not me.

“Why did you let this happen?””

My jaw tightened.

“You walk into my house and ask my wife why?””

His eyes moved back to me.

“You must be Ethan.””

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

“You know who I am?””

He didn’t answer.

Claire stepped forward.

“Victor, leave.””

Victor.

The name meant nothing to me.

But the fear on Claire’s face meant everything.

Victor looked toward the bedroom.

“Sophie.””

The little girl immediately covered her ears.

That reaction told me more than words ever could.

I moved closer to him.

“How do you know her?””

Victor sighed.

“This is complicated.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“It’s actually very simple. There is a child hiding inside my wall, my wife has been lying to me for years, and you somehow have a key to my house.””

Victor stared at me.

Then he said quietly:

“You have no idea what Claire saved you from.””

Claire’s eyes widened.

“Stop.””

Victor ignored her.

“She never told you about her sister, did she?””

I looked at Claire.

“She told me enough.””

“No, she told you a version.””

Victor stepped farther inside.

I didn’t move.

“What version?””

The room went silent.

Victor looked at Sophie.

Then back at me.

“The version where she was the hero.””

Claire’s face turned pale.

“Victor, don’t.””

“You deserve the truth.””

I felt Lily squeeze my hand.

“Ethan,” Claire whispered.

“Please don’t listen to him.””

But I couldn’t stop.

Not anymore.

“Tell me.””

Victor looked almost relieved.

“Eight years ago, Claire’s sister, Rachel, had a baby girl.””

I glanced at Sophie.

“Rachel’s daughter.””

Victor nodded.

“But Rachel wasn’t alone.””

A pause.

“She was running from someone.””

“Who?””

Victor’s expression changed.

“My brother.””

I frowned.

“What does your brother have to do with this?””

Victor looked down.

“He was Sophie’s father.””

The room went completely still.

Sophie started crying.

“No…”

I turned toward her.

She looked terrified.

“Daddy said he was coming back.””

My heart sank.

“Who is your daddy?””

She didn’t answer.

She looked at Victor.

Victor closed his eyes.

And that was when I understood.

He wasn’t a stranger.

He was connected to all of this.

“Victor,” I said slowly.

“Where is Rachel?””

His silence was the answer.

Claire began crying.

“I thought she would come back.””

I looked at my wife.

“What?””

She wiped her face.

“Rachel disappeared after Sophie was born. She left Sophie with me.””

“Then why hide her?””

Claire looked at the floor.

“Because someone was looking for her.””

Victor stepped forward.

“And because Claire knew what would happen if he found Sophie.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Sophie whispered:

“The man who put me there.””

My blood ran cold.

I turned toward her.

“What do you mean?””

The little girl looked at the hidden space behind the closet.

“He said if I told anyone, he would take me away again.””

I felt anger rising.

“Who put you behind that wall?””

Sophie looked at Claire.

Then at Victor.

Then she whispered a name.

A name that made Claire collapse into tears.

“Uncle Marcus.””

Victor immediately looked away.

And I knew.

The name meant something.

Before I could ask another question, Victor’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

He listened silently.

Then his face went pale.

“What do you mean he’s here?””

Everyone froze.

I stared at him.

“Who is here?””

Victor slowly lowered the phone.

“He knows.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“No…”

Victor looked toward the front window.

“He knows Sophie was found.””

Then the lights outside the house went out.

The entire street went dark.

And someone knocked on the front door.

Not slowly this time.

Hard.

Three times.

Sophie started shaking.

“Please don’t let him take me back.””

I looked at Claire.

At Victor.

At the child who had been hidden away.

Then I walked toward the door.

May you like

Because whoever was standing outside had already taken eight years from Sophie.

And I wasn’t going to let him take another second.
