Chapter 4: The Photograph in the Basement

I reached the front door before anyone could stop me.

Behind me, Claire whispered my name.

“Ethan.””

I placed my hand on the lock.

“Who is it?””

No answer.

Only silence.

The kind of silence that feels intentional.

Victor stepped closer.

“Don’t open it.””

I looked back.

“You’re the one who came here with secrets. You don’t get to tell me what to do.””

His face tightened.

“I’m trying to keep you alive.””

That sentence should have scared me.

Instead, it made me angry.

Because everyone in that house seemed to know the truth except me.

I unlocked the door.

But before I opened it, a voice came from outside.

“Ethan Carter.””

My entire body froze.

The person outside knew my full name.

Claire started crying.

“No.””

I turned around.

“Who is this?””

She didn’t answer.

The voice came again.

“You don’t want to make the same mistake Rachel made.””

I opened the door.

Nobody was there.

Only an envelope sitting on the porch.

I looked down.

My name was written on the front.

No stamp.

No address.

Someone had placed it there moments ago.

Victor immediately grabbed it.

“Don’t.””

I pulled it away.

“What is this?””

He looked terrified.

“Proof.””

“Proof of what?””

He didn’t answer.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was another photograph.

This one was newer.

It showed Claire.

Holding Sophie.

But Claire looked younger.

And beside her was another man.

A man I had never seen before.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

You were never supposed to know she survived.

My hands started shaking.

“Who is he?””

Claire covered her face.

Victor answered quietly.

“Marcus.””

I looked at him.

“Your brother.””

Victor nodded.

“He thought Sophie died.””

I looked toward the hallway where Sophie was standing.

“Why?””

Victor took a breath.

“Because Rachel made sure he believed that.””

“Why would she do that?””

“Because Marcus wasn’t safe.””

Claire suddenly spoke.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at her.

She was crying.

“I should have told him.””

I stared at my wife.

“Told me what?””

She walked toward me slowly.

“The night Sophie was born…”

She stopped.

Like saying the words hurt.

“The hospital records were changed.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Claire looked at Sophie.

“Marcus tried to take her.””

Victor nodded.

“He believed Sophie was his property.””

The anger in my chest grew.

“She’s a child.””

“I know,” Claire whispered.

“But he didn’t see her that way.””

A cold feeling settled over me.

“Then why didn’t you call the police?””

Claire looked away.

“Because Marcus had connections.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

I stepped closer.

“What does that mean?””

Victor answered.

“It means people who tried to challenge him disappeared.””

The room went quiet.

Then Lily walked over.

She was holding something.

A small wooden box.

“Daddy?””

I turned.

“Where did you get that?””

She pointed toward the hidden space.

“Sophie gave it to me.””

I opened the box.

Inside were drawings.

Several pictures.

A little girl.

A woman.

A house.

And a man with a dark circle over his face.

I looked at Sophie.

“Who is this?””

She became pale.

“That’s him.””

“Marcus?””

She nodded.

Then she pointed at another drawing.

“This is where he kept me before.””

My breathing stopped.

“Before?””

Sophie nodded.

“Before Claire found me.””

Victor looked confused.

“Found you?””

Sophie squeezed her fingers together.

“She came back for me.””

I turned to Claire.

“You didn’t hide her because you wanted to.””

Claire’s tears fell.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I hid her because Marcus was watching.””

The room became silent.

For the first time that night, I saw something different in Claire’s eyes.

Not just fear.

Guilt.

Deep guilt.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked at Lily.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid I wouldn’t believe you?””

She nodded.

“Afraid he would hurt all of us.””

I wanted to be angry.

I was angry.

But looking at Sophie, I couldn’t ignore the truth.

My wife had lied.

But she had also been terrified.

Then Victor suddenly looked toward the basement door.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I followed his gaze.

“What is it?””

He walked closer.

Slowly.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

Victor opened the basement door.

A cold draft moved through the hallway.

At the bottom of the stairs was an old storage room.

He walked down.

I followed.

The basement smelled like dust and old wood.

Victor stopped beside a shelf.

There was a hidden compartment behind some boxes.

Inside was a small bag.

He pulled it out.

My heart raced.

“What’s that?””

Victor opened it.

Inside were several documents and another photograph.

But this photo was different.

It showed Claire.

Rachel.

Sophie.

And one more baby.

A baby with the exact same birthmark Sophie had.

Victor looked at me.

His face was pale.

“Ethan…”

I grabbed the photograph.

“What?””

He pointed at the baby.

Then at the date.

Eight years ago.

Before Lily was born.

My hands went numb.

Because the photograph proved something impossible.

There wasn’t just one child Claire had hidden.

There had been another.

And on the back of the photograph were four words:

*“The second daughter survived.””*
