Chapter 6: The Truth Hidden in the Birthmark

Nobody moved.

Marcus stood at the bottom of the stairs holding a photograph of my daughter.

My daughter.

Inside my home.

A wave of anger hit me so hard I could barely think.

“When was this taken?””

Marcus looked at the picture.

Then at me.

“Recently.””

Claire gasped.

“You were here?””

Marcus smiled slightly.

“You never noticed.””

I felt sick.

All those nights.

All those moments.

Someone had been close enough to see my family.

And I had never known.

I stepped forward.

“You’re leaving.””

Marcus didn’t move.

“You think this ends because you found one hidden room?””

Victor stepped between us.

“Marcus.””

For the first time, Marcus looked irritated.

“You.””

Victor’s face hardened.

“You should have stopped years ago.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“And you should have protected your own family.””

That sentence hit Victor harder than I expected.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

I turned toward Victor.

“What did you do?””

His silence was enough.

Another betrayal.

Another hidden truth.

I felt like the entire night was a room full of locked doors.

And every time one opened, there was another behind it.

Victor looked at me.

“I made a mistake.””

“What mistake?””

“I believed Marcus when he said he was trying to help Rachel.””

Claire whispered:

“Victor…”

He looked ashamed.

“I gave him information.””

My eyes widened.

“You helped him find her?””

Victor looked down.

“Yes.””

The anger in the room changed.

Even Marcus looked uncomfortable.

Because even he knew what Victor had done was unforgivable.

“You destroyed her life,” Claire whispered.

Victor nodded.

“I know.””

Marcus interrupted.

“This emotional reunion is pointless.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t get to call anything pointless.””

He stared at me.

“You think you know Sophie?””

I glanced at the little girl.

“Yes.””

“No, you don’t.””

He stepped closer.

“She isn’t the only one with secrets.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at Claire.

And Claire immediately went pale.

“Don’t.””

Marcus smiled.

“There it is.””

I turned toward my wife.

“What is he talking about?””

Claire looked terrified.

“Ethan…”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“Tell me.””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“Ask her why Lily has the same birthmark.””

The world stopped.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at Sophie.

The same birthmark.

The one I had noticed earlier.

The one that matched mine.

The one I thought was impossible.

My heart started racing.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

“I’m saying Claire never told you everything about your own daughter.””

Claire began crying.

“Ethan, listen to me.””

But I couldn’t.

Not anymore.

I looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart…”

She looked scared.

I softened my voice.

“Can Daddy see your birthmark?””

She slowly nodded.

Claire stepped forward.

“Please.””

I didn’t understand.

Why was she afraid?

A moment later, I saw it.

The same small mark.

The same shape.

The same place.

My knees almost gave out.

Because I knew that mark.

I had it.

Sophie had it.

And now Lily had it.

Marcus watched my face carefully.

“Now you understand.””

I looked at Claire.

“What have you been hiding from me?””

She covered her mouth.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“From what?””

Her tears fell.

“From the truth.””

The basement became silent.

Then Sophie spoke.

A small voice.

“Daddy…”

I turned toward her.

She was looking at me.

Not Marcus.

Not Claire.

Me.

“I think I know why.””

Everyone froze.

Sophie slowly walked forward.

She held the old photograph.

“The baby in the picture…”

She looked at Lily.

“She’s not my sister.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Sophie looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“She’s my twin.””

Nobody breathed.

Claire collapsed into the chair.

Victor covered his face.

And Marcus…

For the first time all night…

Looked afraid.

Because the one secret he had spent years hiding had just been uncovered by the child he thought nobody would believe.

Then Sophie whispered the final piece of the puzzle.

“Daddy…”

She looked at me.

“Mommy said you were supposed to know the truth when we were both safe.””

I stared at Claire.

“When were you planning to tell me?””

Before she could answer, Marcus stepped backward.

And I noticed something.

He wasn’t angry anymore.

He was leaving.

Because he knew something we didn’t.

Something worse.

I turned toward him.

“What are you afraid of?””

Marcus looked at me.

Then at Sophie and Lily.

May you like

And quietly said:

“You should ask Claire why she was the one who made me disappear eight years ago.””
