Chapter 5: The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed
The words on the back of the photograph wouldn’t leave my mind.
*The second daughter survived.*
I stared at the picture until the edges blurred.
A baby.
Another baby.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life that Claire had kept locked away.
I looked at her standing at the basement stairs.
She looked smaller than I had ever seen her.
Not like my wife.
Not like the woman who had built a life with me.
Like someone who had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.
“Claire.””
My voice sounded unfamiliar.
“Who is this?””
She didn’t answer.
“Who is the baby in this picture?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know she survived.””
I tightened my grip on the photograph.
“That’s not an answer.””
Victor stepped forward.
“Ethan, you need to understand—”
“No.””
I turned toward him.
“I’m done hearing pieces of the truth from everyone except my own wife.””
The basement became silent.
Claire slowly walked down the stairs.
Every step looked painful.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She stopped.
I laughed quietly.
“After another eight years?””
She looked away.
That hurt more than anger would have.
Because she knew I was right.
Sophie was standing at the top of the stairs with Lily beside her.
Two little girls.
Both watching adults destroy the world they thought they understood.
I forced myself to calm down.
Not for Claire.
For them.
I placed the photograph on the table.
“Start from the beginning.””
Claire sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“Rachel had two daughters.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“Sophie and the baby.””
Claire nodded.
“The second baby was born nine months after Sophie.””
“That’s impossible.””
Victor looked at me.
“It happened.””
I stared at the photograph.
“But Sophie said she was Rachel’s only child.””
“She believed that,” Claire whispered.
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Claire swallowed.
“Because Marcus made sure nobody knew about the second baby.””
The name alone changed the atmosphere.
“Why would he hide his own child?””
Victor’s face hardened.
“Because he wasn’t trying to protect the baby.””
A cold silence followed.
“He wanted control.””
I looked at Sophie.
She immediately looked down.
“What happened to Rachel?””
Claire closed her eyes.
“She found out Marcus was planning to take both girls.””
“And?””
“She tried to run.””
The room went quiet.
“Did she make it?””
Claire’s eyes filled with tears.
“No.””
Nobody spoke.
Not even Victor.
I looked back at the photograph.
The truth was becoming clearer.
But somehow it felt worse with every answer.
“What happened after?””
Claire wiped her face.
“I found Sophie first.””
“Where?””
“In an abandoned house outside town.””
My stomach turned.
“She was alone?””
Claire nodded.
“She was terrified.””
I looked at Sophie.
The little girl hugged herself.
“She told me Mommy said to hide.””
My heart broke.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire looked at me.
“Because Marcus found me before I could.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He knew I had Sophie.””
“When?””
“Two days after I brought her home.””
I felt my anger return.
“And you stayed quiet?””
“He threatened us.””
“Threatened us how?””
Claire looked toward Lily.
That was enough.
I understood.
She wasn’t just protecting herself.
She was protecting our daughter.
But another question remained.
“What about the second baby?””
Claire looked at Victor.
Victor took a deep breath.
“She was taken.””
“By Marcus?””
He nodded.
My hands curled into fists.
“How do you know?””
Victor looked away.
“Because I helped find her.””
That sentence shocked me.
“You helped?””
Victor closed his eyes.
“I was wrong.””
For the first time, he sounded broken.
“Marcus was my brother. I spent years making excuses for him.””
“And now?””
“Now I know what he really was.””
The word hung in the air.
I didn’t ask him to explain.
I already knew.
A sound suddenly came from upstairs.
Everyone stopped.
A floorboard creaked.
Claire’s face changed.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She whispered:
“He’s here.””
The basement lights flickered.
Then went out.
Lily screamed.
I immediately moved toward the girls.
“Stay behind me.””
The emergency light turned on, casting the basement in a faint red glow.
Victor grabbed my arm.
“Listen to me.””
“What?””
“Marcus doesn’t come here without a reason.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“What does he want?””
Victor’s voice became quiet.
“The photograph.””
I looked down.
The photograph was still in my hand.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Calm.
Coming down the stairs.
A man appeared at the bottom step.
He looked older than the person in the photographs.
But the confidence was the same.
Marcus.
He looked at me.
Then at Sophie.
A small smile appeared.
“There you are.””
Sophie started shaking.
I stepped forward.
“Stay away from her.””
Marcus looked amused.
“You have no idea what you’re protecting.””
I held the photograph tighter.
“You mean the child you abandoned?””
His expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
“You should be careful with words you don’t understand.””
Claire moved beside me.
“Marcus, it’s over.””
He looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“It’s finally beginning.””
Then he reached into his jacket.
And pulled out another photograph.
A photograph of Lily.
Taken inside our house.
My blood turned cold.
Because I knew exactly what that meant.
May you like
He hadn’t just been watching Sophie.
He had been watching all of us.
