Chapter 8: The Woman Who Came Back
Nobody moved.
The phone felt heavy in my hand.
A woman claiming to be Rachel was on the other end.
The woman everyone believed was gone.
The woman whose disappearance had started all of this.
Claire stared at me.
“Ethan…”
I raised my hand.
Not because I wanted silence.
Because I needed it.
I needed to hear.
“Rachel?””
“Yes.””
Her voice shook.
“I know this sounds impossible.””
“It does.””
“I know Claire told you I disappeared.””
I looked at my wife.
“She did.””
Rachel was quiet.
Then she said:
“She wasn’t completely lying.””
That sentence confused me.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I left.””
The basement went silent.
“But I didn’t leave willingly.””
I looked at Claire.
“What happened?””
Rachel took a shaky breath.
“Eight years ago, I found out Marcus wasn’t just controlling me.””
Her voice cracked.
“He was planning something bigger.””
“What?””
“I found documents. Names. Records.””
Victor’s face changed.
“What kind of records?””
Rachel answered:
“Proof that he had been using people’s identities and money for years.””
Victor looked stunned.
“He knew.””
Rachel continued.
“Marcus found out I knew.””
“And that’s when you disappeared?””
“Yes.””
I looked at Claire.
“Then why did Claire say you left?””
Rachel was quiet.
Because the answer mattered.
“Because I asked her to.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I needed Marcus to believe I was gone.””
Claire started crying.
“She asked me to keep everyone safe.””
Rachel’s voice softened.
“Claire protected my daughters.””
I looked at my wife.
The anger inside me became complicated.
She had lied.
But she had also carried something impossible.
“Then why did you say she wasn’t safe?””
Rachel paused.
“Because there’s something she never told you.””
Claire closed her eyes.
“No.””
I turned.
“What?””
Rachel continued.
“Claire didn’t just hide Sophie.””
My chest tightened.
“What else?””
“She hid the reason Marcus stopped looking.””
Everyone looked at Claire.
She whispered:
“Ethan…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“I need the truth.””
Claire looked destroyed.
“I thought I was protecting you.””
“From what?””
Rachel answered.
“From the fact that Ethan was already connected to this.””
My blood went cold.
“What?””
The phone nearly slipped from my hand.
Rachel continued.
“Before you met Claire, you knew Marcus.””
I frowned.
“No, I didn’t.””
“Yes, you did.””
I looked at Victor.
He looked away.
That scared me more than anything.
“Victor?””
He didn’t answer.
“Tell me.””
Victor finally spoke.
“You worked for Marcus.””
The room spun.
“What?””
“Not like that.””
Victor stepped forward.
“You were a financial consultant. You helped him manage some of his businesses.””
I stared.
“I don’t remember.””
Rachel spoke quietly.
“Because Marcus erased you from that part of his life.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because you found something.””
“What?””
A pause.
Then:
“The truth about him.””
I looked at Claire.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“I found out after we got married.””
“And you never told me?””
“I was afraid the memories would come back.””
The basement felt like it was closing around me.
My entire life suddenly had missing pieces.
The job I left.
The years before Lily.
The strange gaps in my memories.
Everything.
Then Sophie walked toward me.
“Daddy?””
I looked down.
She was holding the photograph.
“The birthmark.””
I looked at her.
“What about it?””
She touched the mark on her arm.
“Mommy said it means something.””
Claire looked shocked.
“What?””
Sophie looked confused.
“She said when Daddy sees it, he’ll remember.””
My heart stopped.
“Remember what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Lily suddenly spoke.
A quiet voice.
“I remember something too.””
Everyone turned.
Lily was crying.
“I remember a man coming to our house when I was little.””
Claire’s face went pale.
“Lily…”
“He told Mommy he knew where Daddy was.””
I felt a chill.
“What man?””
Lily looked toward the basement door.
“He had the same scar as the man in Sophie’s drawing.””
Marcus.
The room went silent.
Then Rachel spoke through the phone.
“Ethan, listen carefully.””
Her voice trembled.
“Marcus didn’t come back for Sophie.””
A pause.
“He came back because he knows you remembered.””
I looked at Claire.
At Sophie.
At Lily.
Then I saw something on the floor.
A small envelope.
It wasn’t there before.
Nobody had noticed it.
My name was written on it.
But this time, the handwriting wasn’t from Marcus.
It was mine.
And inside was a message I had apparently written eight years ago.
A message I had no memory of writing.
