Chapter 2: The Secret Claire Buried
I don’t remember moving.
One second, I was standing in Lily’s bedroom.
The next, I was sitting on the floor, staring at the photograph in my hand.
Claire.
A baby.
Another child.
A life she had hidden from me.
The little girl behind the wall kept watching me.
Her eyes moved between Claire and me.
Like she was afraid she had caused trouble.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
My chest tightened.
“Sorry for what?””
She looked down.
“For coming out.””
Those words hurt more than anything else.
A child was apologizing for existing.
I slowly moved closer.
“What’s your name?””
The girl hesitated.
Then she whispered, “Sophie.””
Claire closed her eyes.
Hearing the name seemed to break something inside her.
“Sophie,” I repeated.
The girl nodded.
“That’s what Grandma called me.””
I looked at Claire.
“Your mother knew about her?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“Claire.””
Her shoulders shook.
“I can explain.””
I stood up.
“No more explanations without the truth.””
Lily was standing near the doorway, crying silently.
I immediately softened.
“Sweetheart, go to your room for a minute.””
“But Sophie…”
“I know.””
I knelt down.
“I’m going to help her.””
Lily nodded and ran away.
The moment she disappeared, I turned back to Claire.
“How long?””
Claire looked at the floor.
“How long has Sophie been here?””
“She hasn’t been there the whole time.””
“That wasn’t my question.””
She wiped her tears.
“Six months.””
I stared at her.
Six months.
A child had been hidden inside our house for six months.
While I went to work.
While I kissed my wife goodnight.
While I read stories to Lily.
“What happened six months ago?””
Claire sat down on the edge of the bed.
“She found me.””
“Who found you?””
“Sophie.””
I felt anger rising.
“She found you?””
Claire nodded.
“She came to the house.””
“Why?””
Claire looked at the photograph.
“Because she was looking for her mother.””
Silence filled the room.
I felt like the walls were closing in.
“You’re her mother?””
Claire looked away.
“No.””
The answer shocked me.
“No?””
She shook her head.
“I raised her for a while.””
I stared at her.
“That makes no sense.””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Sophie belonged to someone I knew before you.””
“Who?””
She didn’t respond.
“Who, Claire?””
Her lips trembled.
“My sister.””
I felt my confusion grow.
“Your sister?””
Claire nodded.
“She had a baby. She wasn’t ready. There were problems.””
“What problems?””
Claire looked toward the hidden space.
“Problems I thought I had fixed.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t get to say things like that and expect me not to ask questions.””
She covered her face.
“My sister disappeared.””
“When?””
“Eight years ago.””
The same year on the photograph.
I looked back at Sophie.
She was sitting quietly, holding the picture like it was the only thing she owned.
“Why did you hide her from me?””
Claire’s eyes filled with shame.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked directly at me.
“That you would leave.””
I laughed once.
Not because it was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe it.
“You hid a child in our house because you thought I would leave?””
“I didn’t know what to do.””
“You could have called someone.””
“I tried.””
“Who?””
Claire went silent.
That silence told me everything.
Someone else was involved.
I walked toward Sophie.
“Did someone tell you to stay quiet?””
The little girl looked nervous.
She glanced at Claire.
Then she nodded.
My stomach dropped.
“Who?””
Sophie squeezed the photograph.
“He said nobody could know I was here.””
“Who said that?””
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer, a loud sound came from downstairs.
A knock.
Three slow knocks.
Claire’s face changed instantly.
The color drained from her skin.
“No…”
I looked toward the hallway.
“Who is that?””
She stood up quickly.
“Ethan, you need to leave.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“Take the girls and go.””
“Why?””
Another knock echoed through the house.
This time louder.
Sophie started shaking.
She whispered one sentence that made my blood run cold.
“He found me.””
I looked at Claire.
“Who found you?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she didn’t need to.
Her terrified expression said enough.

Then the front door handle slowly began to turn.
And the person standing outside called out Claire’s name.
