Chapter 9: The Final Piece Of My Father’s Legacy
Vanessa’s words stayed in the air.
“Your brother was.””
Nobody moved.
Not the investigator.
Not Daniel.
Not even me.
Because there was a part of me that still wanted to believe there had been a misunderstanding.
That Ethan had made one terrible decision.
That Adrian had made one terrible mistake.
That Vanessa had one terrible explanation.
But the truth was never that simple.
“Start talking,” the investigator said.
Vanessa nodded.
For the first time since I met her, she looked small.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just someone carrying the weight of everything she had done.
“Five years ago, Ethan contacted me.””
I crossed my arms.
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because he knew I worked in corporate consulting. He knew I had access to people close to Adrian.””
Daniel frowned.
“So Ethan recruited you?””
Vanessa nodded.
“He told me Adrian was going to take everything from him.””
I almost laughed.
“Everything?””
My voice became sharper.
“He was my brother.””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
The room went quiet.
“You don’t know what it feels like to sit beside someone your entire life and never realize they’re waiting for you to fail.””
Vanessa said nothing.
Because there was nothing she could say.
The investigator placed a recorder on the table.
“Continue.””
Vanessa took a breath.
“Ethan wanted control of Sterling International. But he knew he couldn’t take it directly.””
She looked at the letters.
“So he created a plan.””
My stomach tightened.
“A plan involving me.””
“Yes.””
The pieces finally started connecting.
The affair.
The public humiliation.
The financial attacks.
The fake documents.
Everything had been designed to destroy my reputation before anyone would believe me.
“He wanted everyone to see you as unstable,” Vanessa said.
“Why?””
“Because if you lost credibility, the board would remove you.””
Daniel looked at me.
“And Ethan would take control.””
I nodded slowly.
The investigator opened his notebook.
“But Adrian?””
Vanessa hesitated.
“That’s where everything changed.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“Adrian was supposed to cooperate.””
My expression hardened.
“He did.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“He was supposed to help Ethan take the company.””
She looked down.
“But then he found out what Ethan really wanted.””
The investigator leaned forward.
“What was that?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your father’s hidden asset.””
The room went silent again.
My father.
The secret.
The thing everyone had been chasing.
“What exactly is it?”” I asked.
Vanessa looked at the investigator.
“You should show her.””
The investigator opened the storage box again.
He removed the small drive from my father’s locked box.
“We recovered this earlier.””
He connected it to a secure device.
A single video appeared.
My father.
Older.
Tired.
But smiling.
I stopped breathing.
I hadn’t seen him in years.
“Claire,” my father said on the screen.
My eyes filled instantly.
“If you are watching this, then something happened that forced you to discover what I protected.””
His voice was calm.
“First, I need you to know something.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“You were never chosen because you were my daughter.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“You were chosen because you were the only person I trusted to protect people over profit.””
I covered my mouth.
My father continued.
“The technology I developed was never meant to make someone rich.””
A pause.
“It was meant to change how companies protect their employees and communities.””
Daniel stared at the screen.
The investigator listened carefully.
“My greatest fear was that someone would use it only for personal power.””
My father looked serious.
“And that person was already close to me.””
The video paused for a moment.
Then he said:
“Adrian Sterling.””
Everyone looked at me.
But I kept watching.
“I knew Adrian was ambitious. I knew he wanted success.””
My father sighed.
“But I never expected him to confuse love with ownership.””
The words hurt.
Because they described exactly what happened.
My father continued.
“Claire, if Adrian ever betrays you, do not let anger control your decisions.””
The screen went dark.
Nobody spoke.
Because my father had known.
Maybe not everything.
But enough.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“I didn’t know about the video.””
I looked at her.
“Then why come here?””
She took a breath.
“Because Ethan abandoned me too.””
The investigator raised an eyebrow.
“What happened?””
Vanessa looked ashamed.
“When the plan failed, Ethan tried to erase everyone involved.””
The room became still.
“He threatened me.””
I looked at her.
“Why should I believe you?””
She nodded.
“You shouldn’t.””
That answer surprised me.
“I know what I did.””
She looked at the floor.
“I helped hurt you.””
A pause.
“But I also know Ethan is more dangerous than Adrian.””
The investigator received a call.
His expression changed.
“What happened?””
He listened.
Then looked at us.
“We found Ethan.””
Everyone froze.
“Where?””
The investigator stood.
“At Sterling International headquarters.””
My heart dropped.
“Why would he go there?””
The investigator’s face became serious.
“Because he wasn’t trying to run.””
May you like
He looked at me.
“He was trying to finish what he started.””
