Chapter 2: The Woman Behind The Throne

The ballroom that had been filled with laughter became a courtroom without walls.

Nobody moved.

Nobody whispered.

Everyone wanted to know what was happening.

Adrian stared at the investigator as if his brain refused to accept reality.

“This is impossible,” he said.

The investigator calmly opened a folder.

“I assure you, Mr. Sterling, it is not.””

Adrian turned toward me.

His eyes were no longer angry.

They were desperate.

“Claire.””

I had heard my name from him thousands of times.

When he needed help.

When he needed advice.

When he needed someone to fix problems he created.

But I had never heard fear in his voice before.

“What did you do?””

I looked at him.

The same man who had slapped me in front of everyone.

The same man who believed my silence meant weakness.

“I stopped protecting you.””

His face tightened.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous. Adrian built this company.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

My voice was steady.

“He built the image of this company.””

I pointed toward the giant screen behind the stage.

The screen that had displayed Adrian’s name all evening.

“Now everyone can see who built the foundation.””

The investigator nodded to his team.

Within seconds, documents were placed in front of the executives.

The room erupted with shocked whispers.

Adrian looked around.

“What are those?””

The investigator answered.

“Evidence.””

He opened the first file.

“Unauthorized transfers from company accounts.””

The second.

“False consulting payments.””

The third.

“Personal expenses disguised as business operations.””

Adrian’s face turned pale.

Vanessa stopped smiling.

The woman who had laughed minutes earlier suddenly looked like she wanted to disappear.

“This is a setup,” Adrian said.

The investigator looked at him.

“No. This is an investigation.””

Adrian turned back to me.

“You did this?””

I stepped closer.

“No.””

I paused.

“You did this.””

He stared at me.

“You’re my wife.””

I almost laughed.

“Exactly.””

The room became silent.

“You forgot the person standing beside you was the same person who reviewed every contract, every acquisition, and every financial report for fifteen years.””

Adrian shook his head.

“You were supposed to stay quiet.””

That sentence made several executives look at him differently.

Because everyone heard it.

Not an apology.

Not regret.

A confession.

Vanessa grabbed Adrian’s arm.

“Adrian, we need to leave.””

But the investigator stepped between them.

“You’re not leaving.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“I’m not involved.””

The investigator looked at her.

“We haven’t even discussed your role yet.””

Her confidence disappeared instantly.

Adrian noticed.

“Vanessa?””

She looked away.

And that tiny movement told him everything.

The betrayal he had never imagined was now standing right beside him.

“You knew?”” Adrian whispered.

Vanessa said nothing.

“Vanessa, you knew?””

Her silence was louder than any answer.

Adrian stepped backward.

For the first time, he looked completely alone.

Then the investigator turned toward me.

“Mrs. Bennett, there is one more matter.””

I looked at him.

“What is it?””

He handed me a small envelope.

Adrian watched closely.

“What is that?””

I opened it.

Inside was a single document.

My expression changed.

Because I knew the signature.

I knew the name.

The investigator spoke quietly.

“Before we entered tonight, we found evidence of another person involved.””

The room held its breath.

Adrian stared at the envelope in my hand.

“Who?””

I looked up slowly.

And before I could answer, the ballroom doors opened again.

A man walked inside.

Someone Adrian never expected to see.

Someone who had disappeared five years earlier.

Adrian’s former business partner.

The man everyone believed was gone forever.

He looked directly at Adrian.

And said one sentence that made my husband lose all color from his face.

“I know where the rest of the money went.””

Adrian stepped back.

May you like

The investigator closed his folder.

“And this was only the first investigation.””
