Chapter 6: The House Full Of Secrets

I knew I should not have gone.

Every logical part of me understood that.

The investigator told me to wait.

Daniel told me it was a trap.

Even the officers surrounding me knew the risk.

But there was one thing they didn’t understand.

Ethan wasn’t just someone who betrayed my business.

He was my family.

And family secrets have a way of pulling people into places they should never return.

The old Bennett house sat at the edge of town, exactly where I remembered it.

The same white fence.

The same oak tree in the front yard.

The same porch where my father used to sit every Sunday morning.

But something felt different.

Like the house itself knew something terrible had happened inside.

I didn’t go alone.

I wasn’t reckless.

The investigator and Daniel waited nearby.

But I walked to the front door myself.

Because I needed answers.

The door was already open.

“Ethan?””

No response.

I stepped inside.

The house smelled like dust and old memories.

Family pictures still hung on the walls.

My childhood.

My father.

Me and Ethan standing together.

Two children who believed nothing could ever separate them.

Then I saw him.

Ethan stood in my father’s old office.

Older.

Tired.

But still my brother.

“Why?”” I asked.

He looked at me.

No anger.

No smile.

Just exhaustion.

“Because it should have been mine.””

I felt disappointed more than angry.

“Is that really what this is about?””

He looked around the office.

“You have no idea what it felt like.””

I walked closer.

“Explain it.””

He laughed quietly.

“Everyone loved you.””

“That’s not true.””

“Yes, it is.””

His voice became sharper.

“Dad trusted you. Investors trusted you. Adrian chose you.””

I stared at him.

“Adrian betrayed me.””

Ethan looked away.

“Eventually.””

That word caught my attention.

“Eventually?””

Silence.

Then I understood.

“You knew.””

Ethan didn’t answer.

“You knew Adrian was cheating.””

Still nothing.

“You knew he was stealing.””

His silence became the answer.

My voice lowered.

“You helped him.””

Ethan finally looked at me.

“I helped myself.””

The honesty was worse than a lie.

“Why?””

He stepped toward the desk.

“Because I was tired of watching everyone treat you like you were special.””

I shook my head.

“You weren’t competing with me.””

“But I was.””

He opened a drawer.

Inside were old documents.

“Do you know what Dad wrote before he died?””

I didn’t move.

“He said you had the patience, intelligence, and discipline to protect what he built.””

Ethan smiled bitterly.

“He never said that about me.””

I stared at him.

“So you destroyed everything because you were jealous?””

His face changed.

“Don’t simplify it.””

“Then explain it.””

He looked at me.

“I didn’t want to destroy everything.””

He paused.

“I wanted you to lose.””

The words were painful because they were simple.

Not complicated.

Not accidental.

He wanted me to lose.

My own brother.

The investigator’s voice suddenly came from behind us.

“Ethan Bennett.””

Ethan turned.

The officers entered.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan laughed.

“You followed her.””

I looked at him.

“Did you really think I would come alone?””

His smile disappeared.

The investigator stepped forward.

“Ethan, you are under investigation for fraud, conspiracy, and falsification of corporate records.””

Ethan looked at me.

“You think this ends with me?””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“There are things Adrian never told you.””

I felt a chill.

“More secrets?””

Ethan nodded.

“You think Adrian was the mastermind?””

The room became silent.

“He wasn’t.””

The investigator watched him carefully.

“Then who was?””

Ethan smiled sadly.

“You really don’t know.””

My heart started racing.

Because suddenly every piece of the puzzle felt wrong.

Adrian.

Vanessa.

Ethan.

The stolen money.

The fake documents.

Maybe I had been looking at the wrong person.

Ethan walked past the officers.

Before they took him away, he stopped beside me.

And whispered:

“Ask Adrian why he married you.””

I froze.

“What?””

Ethan looked at me.

“Because the truth is…”

He paused.

“He never chose you because he loved you.””

The officers pulled him away.

I stood there in my father’s office, surrounded by old memories and new betrayals.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“Your husband didn’t marry you for your money. He married you because of what your father hid.””

I stared at the screen.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

I was afraid of the truth.
