Chapter 5: The Betrayal I Never Saw Coming

I stared at the photograph in my hand until the edges began to blur.

Not because I was confused.

Because I understood exactly who I was looking at.

Someone I had trusted.

Someone who had sat at my dinner table.

Someone who had hugged me and told me they cared about my family.

My own brother.

Ethan Bennett.

For years, Ethan had been the person I called when life became overwhelming.

When my father passed away.

When I was struggling to balance the company and my marriage.

When Adrian started changing.

Ethan was always there.

Or at least I thought he was.

The photograph showed him sitting across from Adrian in a private restaurant.

Between them was a folder.

And on Adrian’s face was an expression I knew too well.

The expression of someone making a deal.

The investigator watched me carefully.

“Mrs. Bennett, are you familiar with this person?””

I slowly lowered the photograph.

“Yes.””

The ballroom was silent.

“Who is he?”” Daniel asked.

I looked at the picture again.

“My brother.””

A wave of whispers moved through the crowd.

Adrian closed his eyes for a second.

Almost like he had been waiting for this moment.

“Claire…”

I turned toward him.

“How long?””

He didn’t answer.

“How long have you been working with him?””

Adrian’s silence was enough.

I felt something break inside me.

Not because Adrian betrayed me.

I already knew that.

But because I realized how deep the betrayal went.

How many people had been standing around me while I believed I was safe.

The investigator looked at Adrian.

“Mr. Sterling, who is Ethan Bennett?””

Adrian hesitated.

Then he said something that shocked everyone.

“He was supposed to be the person who took control after Claire.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What?””

Adrian looked at me.

“Ask your brother.””

I stepped forward.

“You used my own family?””

His expression hardened.

“You were never supposed to find out.””

Those words hurt more than any insult.

Because they confirmed everything.

This wasn’t an accident.

This wasn’t a mistake.

It was a plan.

The investigator turned toward the officers.

“Find Ethan Bennett.””

Adrian suddenly laughed.

“You’re too late.””

Everyone looked at him.

“What does that mean?”” Daniel asked.

Adrian looked toward the entrance.

“He already left.””

A cold silence filled the ballroom.

The investigator immediately checked his phone.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“He’s right.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

The investigator looked at me.

“Ethan’s vehicle was found abandoned fifteen minutes ago.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Did he run?””

The investigator didn’t answer immediately.

That worried me more.

“Not exactly.””

He looked at Adrian.

“We believe he was trying to remove evidence before we arrived.””

Adrian smiled faintly.

For the first time, I saw something different in his eyes.

Not confidence.

Relief.

Because Ethan disappearing meant Adrian still believed he had a way out.

I walked closer to him.

“You knew he would run.””

Adrian looked away.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I understand perfectly.””

The man who claimed to love me had spent years building a second life behind my back.

The investigator interrupted.

“Mrs. Bennett, there is something else you should know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me another document.

“This was recovered from Ethan’s office.””

I unfolded it.

The first page was a financial agreement.

The second page was a transfer authorization.

The third page contained signatures.

My eyes stopped.

Because one signature was mine.

Except I had never signed it.

“This is fake.””

The investigator nodded.

“That is our conclusion.””

My hands tightened around the paper.

Adrian watched me.

“You see?””

I looked at him.

“You’re still trying to make this about me.””

His expression changed.

“I’m trying to tell you that Ethan planned this.””

I stared at him.

“And you helped him.””

He had no answer.

Because there wasn’t one.

The investigator stepped forward.

“Mr. Sterling, you will need to explain your involvement.””

Adrian looked at the officers.

Then at me.

Then something strange happened.

His anger disappeared.

A frightened expression replaced it.

“Claire.””

I didn’t respond.

“There’s something you need to know about Ethan.””

I remained silent.

“He wasn’t trying to steal the company.””

I frowned.

“Then what was he trying to do?””

Adrian looked at the photograph again.

“He was trying to destroy you.””

The words hit differently.

Because Adrian was many things.

A liar.

A manipulator.

A traitor.

But fear was not something I saw often.

And he was terrified.

“Why?”” I asked.

Adrian swallowed.

“Because he believes the company should have belonged to him.””

The investigator looked confused.

“Explain.””

Adrian took a breath.

“Years ago, before Claire and I married, Ethan discovered something about her inheritance.””

I froze.

“My inheritance?””

Adrian nodded.

“He believed your father should have left him control of the money.””

I felt my heartbeat change.

That was impossible.

My father had always treated Ethan like a son.

But he had never given him control over anything.

“He was angry,” Adrian continued.

“He thought you were chosen instead of him.””

I looked at the photograph again.

The betrayal suddenly became much older than I realized.

The investigator closed his notebook.

“Then we need to find Ethan.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Claire, are you okay?””

I wanted to say yes.

But I couldn’t.

Because the truth was worse than losing a company.

I had lost the illusion that I knew the people around me.

Then my phone rang.

Everyone looked at it.

I almost didn’t answer.

But something inside me told me I needed to.

I picked it up.

A voice came through.

A voice I hadn’t heard in years.

“Claire.””

My blood went cold.

Because I recognized it immediately.

“Ethan?””

A pause.

Then he whispered:

“You should have let Adrian win.””

The call ended.

And one second later…

A message appeared on my screen.

A picture.

Of my childhood home.

May you like

With a note underneath.

“Come alone if you want the truth.””
