Chapter 4: The Secret Hidden In The Foundation

The police did not take Adrian away immediately.

Not because he was innocent.

Because the investigator wanted answers.

And Adrian knew it.

He had spent years controlling rooms.

Controlling conversations.

Controlling people.

But now he was trapped inside the one thing he valued most.

Information.

“Who knows?”” I asked.

Adrian looked at me.

A small smile appeared.

“You really think you know everything?””

I hated that smile.

Because it was the same one he used whenever he believed he was smarter than everyone else.

But this time, something was different.

His confidence was cracked.

The investigator stepped closer.

“Mr. Sterling, choose your words carefully.””

Adrian ignored him.

“Claire, you should ask yourself why I never fought you for control of the company.””

I stared at him.

“You didn’t fight because you knew you were guilty.””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“Because there was something bigger.””

The ballroom became silent again.

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Still trying to manipulate people?””

Adrian looked at him.

“You should know better than anyone.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

A brief flash of concern crossed his face.

I noticed.

And so did Adrian.

“There it is,” Adrian said.

“What?”” I asked.

Adrian smiled.

“Even Daniel knows.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Don’t involve her.””

Those four words made everyone look at him.

Because they revealed something.

Daniel was afraid.

Not of Adrian.

Of the secret.

I turned toward him.

“What does he mean?””

Daniel remained quiet.

“Daniel.””

He looked away.

I felt something cold settle in my chest.

After everything I had uncovered tonight…

There was still something hidden from me.

The investigator looked between us.

“Mr. Cross?””

Daniel sighed.

“I was hoping this would never come out this way.””

Adrian laughed softly.

“Of course you were.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Tell me.””

He hesitated.

Then he spoke.

“Five years ago, when Adrian pushed me out of the company, I discovered something.””

“What?””

Daniel looked at the executives.

“Sterling International was never built only on our investments.””

The room became confused.

He continued.

“There was an original investor.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“Stop.””

Daniel ignored him.

“Someone who provided the money that allowed the company to survive its first year.””

I looked at Adrian.

“Who?””

Daniel looked at me.

And the answer shocked me.

“You.””

For a moment, I thought I misunderstood.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“Before the company had a name, before Adrian became famous, before anyone cared about him…”

He paused.

“You invested your inheritance into the company.””

I remembered.

The apartment I sold.

The savings account my father left me.

The years of sacrifice.

But Adrian always told everyone he built the company himself.

“He changed the ownership records,” Daniel continued.

“He convinced everyone the money came from his family.””

The room erupted.

Executives whispered.

Adrian’s face turned furious.

“You don’t have proof.””

Daniel looked at the investigator.

“We do.””

The investigator opened another file.

Inside were old financial records.

Original contracts.

Bank transfers.

Everything Adrian thought was buried.

I looked at my husband.

And for the first time, I didn’t see the man who hurt me.

I saw a stranger.

Someone who had built an empire on a lie.

Adrian’s voice became desperate.

“Claire, listen.””

I didn’t answer.

“You’re misunderstanding.””

“No,” I said.

My voice was calm.

“I finally understand.””

He stepped closer.

“You think taking this from me will make you happy?””

I looked at him.

“You never understood.””

The room waited.

“This was never about taking something from you.””

I pointed toward the people who had worked for him.

“The people you lied to.””

Then toward Daniel.

“The people you betrayed.””

Then finally myself.

“The person you humiliated.””

Adrian looked away.

Because he knew.

He had lost the one thing he always protected.

His image.

The investigator received another call.

This time, his expression became serious.

He walked toward me.

“Mrs. Bennett.””

“Yes?””

“There is one more piece of evidence.””

“What is it?””

He handed me a photograph.

I looked down.

And my entire body went still.

Because it showed Adrian meeting someone.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should not have been part of this.

Daniel saw my face change.

“Claire…”

I looked up.

The investigator spoke quietly.

“Your husband wasn’t working alone.””

I stared at the photograph.

Then at Adrian.

And he knew.

He knew I had finally discovered the one secret he had protected more than anything.

May you like

Because the person standing beside him in that picture…

Was someone I trusted with my entire life.
