Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Marriage
I spent the next hour trying to understand one impossible truth.
Adrian had lied to me.
But maybe not about everything.
That was the part that disturbed me most.
A simple betrayal would have been easier.
A villain was easier to understand.
But Adrian was something more complicated.
A man who had hurt me.
A man who had hidden things.
A man who might also have been hiding something to protect me.
And I hated that part of me still wanted answers.
The investigator sat across from me at the dining table.
“We need to know everything Adrian told you.””
I looked at him.
“He told me he loved me.””
The investigator stayed silent.
Because we both knew that answer wasn’t enough.
Daniel stood near the window.
“Claire, there’s something else.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“I found something before tonight.””
My expression changed.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
I stared at him.
“Everyone knew pieces of the truth except me.””
He lowered his head.
“You were the one person Adrian was afraid to hurt.””
That almost made me angry.
“Afraid?””
I laughed quietly.
“He humiliated me in front of hundreds of people.””
Daniel nodded.
“I know.””
“Then don’t tell me he was afraid.””
Daniel looked at me.
“He was afraid because he knew exactly what would happen if you ever discovered everything.””
Before I could respond, the police officer entered.
“Mrs. Bennett.””
“Yes?””
“We located another storage unit connected to Adrian.””
My heart tightened.
“What’s inside?””
The officer looked at the investigator.
“Personal items.””
That sounded strange.
Not evidence.
Not financial records.
Personal items.
We drove there immediately.
The storage unit was small.
Cold.
Filled with boxes.
The investigator opened the first one.
Inside were old business records.
The second contained photographs.
The third stopped everyone.
Because it contained letters.
Hundreds of them.
All addressed to me.
I picked one up.
The date was five years before Adrian proposed.
I opened it.
Claire,
I don’t know if I will ever have the courage to tell you the truth.
I stopped reading.
My hands shook.
Daniel looked over.
“What does it say?””
I continued.
When I first met you, I was supposed to be watching your father’s company.
I was supposed to understand what he had hidden.
But then I met you.
And everything changed.
I looked up.
The room felt smaller.
The investigator remained silent.
I opened another letter.
Then another.
Then another.
They were all the same.
Adrian had written them over years.
But he never sent them.
Why?
Because every letter contained the same confession.
He was not supposed to love me.
He was supposed to use me.
But he failed.
The last letter was different.
The date was two weeks before the gala.
The exact time when I discovered the affair.
Claire,
I know you think I betrayed you.
Maybe I did.
Maybe I deserve whatever happens next.
But there is something you need to know.
Vanessa was never the person controlling me.
I stared at the page.
The words blurred.
Because the next sentence changed everything.
Someone inside your family forced this situation.
Someone who threatened to destroy you if I refused.
I looked at Daniel.
“What does this mean?””
The investigator took the letter.
“We need to verify this.””
A sound came from outside.
Everyone turned.
A car engine.
The officer looked through the window.
“Someone is here.””
A black vehicle stopped outside.
The door opened.
A woman stepped out.
I recognized her immediately.
Vanessa.
But she looked nothing like the confident woman from the gala.
No designer smile.
No arrogance.
Just fear.
She walked inside slowly.
“Claire.””
I stood up.
“What are you doing here?””
Vanessa looked at the letters.
Then at me.
“I need to tell you the truth.””
The investigator moved closer.
“You should know you are under investigation.””
Vanessa nodded.
“I know.””
She looked at me.
“Because I’m the reason Adrian couldn’t tell you everything.””
The room went silent.
My hands tightened.
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
Then whispered:
“Because five years ago, your brother made me an offer.””
My heart stopped.
“An offer for what?””
She looked directly at me.
“To destroy your marriage.””
I felt the ground shift beneath me.
The investigator stepped forward.
“Start from the beginning.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
And said the words that would change everything.
“Ethan Bennett was never working for Adrian.””
A pause.
“He was using Adrian.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Vanessa added:
“And Adrian wasn’t the person who planned your downfall.””
May you like
She looked at me.
“Your brother was.””
