Chapter 3: The Partner Who Came Back From The Dead

The room stayed frozen after Daniel Cross spoke.

Not because people recognized him.

Because Adrian did.

My husband’s face lost every trace of arrogance he had carried all night.

For the first time, the powerful CEO of Sterling International looked like an ordinary man caught in a nightmare.

“Daniel…” Adrian whispered.

The man standing near the ballroom entrance looked nothing like the person Adrian had described five years ago.

Back then, Adrian told everyone Daniel had abandoned the company.

He said Daniel had disappeared after making reckless financial decisions.

He said he had been forced to save the business alone.

But I remembered something Adrian never knew I remembered.

The night Daniel vanished, Adrian came home at three in the morning.

His shirt was wrinkled.

His hands were shaking.

And he told me one sentence.

“Some people have to be removed before they destroy everything.””

At the time, I thought he was talking about business.

I was wrong.

Daniel slowly walked toward the stage.

The investigator stepped aside and allowed him through.

“Five years ago,” Daniel said, looking at the crowd, “everyone was told I betrayed this company.””

Nobody spoke.

“They were told I stole money. They were told I disappeared because I was guilty.””

He stopped in front of Adrian.

“But that wasn’t what happened.””

Adrian swallowed.

“Daniel, whatever you think happened—”

“No.””

Daniel’s voice cut through the room.

“You don’t get to rewrite this story anymore.””

The executives who had surrounded Adrian all night started moving away from him.

Small movements.

One step back.

Then another.

The people who had laughed with him minutes earlier were now afraid to even stand beside him.

Adrian noticed.

“You’re trying to destroy me.””

Daniel shook his head.

“I’m trying to show everyone what you already destroyed.””

He looked toward me.

For a moment, his expression softened.

“Claire was the only person who kept this company alive after I left.””

Adrian immediately reacted.

“Don’t listen to him.””

But nobody looked at Adrian.

They looked at me.

Because suddenly the story they had believed for years was changing.

The quiet wife standing behind the CEO was no longer invisible.

She was the person who had been holding everything together.

The investigator stepped forward.

“Mr. Cross provided additional evidence regarding the original acquisition records.””

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“What records?””

Daniel smiled sadly.

“The ones you thought disappeared.””

He reached into his briefcase and removed a small storage device.

The investigator took it.

Adrian’s voice became sharper.

“This is ridiculous. Anyone can create fake evidence.””

The investigator looked at him.

“That is why we verified every file before tonight.””

A large screen behind the stage turned on.

The first image appeared.

A company agreement.

Then another.

Then another.

The room became quieter with every second.

Because the documents showed something Adrian had spent years hiding.

Ownership.

Transfers.

Original investments.

And one name appeared again and again.

Claire Bennett.

A woman everyone thought was only the CEO’s wife.

A woman Adrian introduced as someone who “helped with small things.””

The truth was much different.

I had been there when the first office opened.

I had signed the first emergency loan.

I had negotiated with investors when Adrian was too nervous to make the calls.

I had worked nights while he attended meetings and accepted praise.

But I never cared about recognition.

I cared about building something.

Until he decided to use that trust against me.

Vanessa stared at the screen.

Her face became pale.

“You never told me,” she whispered.

Adrian looked at her.

“Not now.””

“No,” she replied.

Her voice trembled.

“You told me she was just your wife.””

I watched the realization spread across Vanessa’s face.

She finally understood.

She had not replaced a weak woman.

She had challenged someone she never bothered to understand.

Adrian stepped toward me.

“Claire, listen to me.””

I looked at him.

The entire room watched.

“You don’t want this.””

A strange calm came over me.

“Don’t want what?””

“To destroy everything we built.””

I almost smiled.

“You mean everything I built?””

His jaw tightened.

“You’re angry.””

“No.””

I looked around the ballroom.

“I’m disappointed.””

That seemed to hurt him more than anger.

Because anger meant he still mattered.

Disappointment meant he didn’t.

The investigator received a message through his earpiece.

His expression changed.

Then he looked directly at Adrian.

“Mr. Sterling.””

Adrian turned.

“What now?””

The investigator took a breath.

“We found another account.””

Adrian froze.

“That’s impossible.””

“It was hidden under a company subsidiary.””

The investigator looked at the executives.

“And it connects directly to several unauthorized payments.””

Adrian looked toward Vanessa.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

“You told me those payments were approved,” Adrian said.

Her eyes widened.

“You said you handled everything.””

The room watched the two people who had humiliated me begin turning against each other.

The investigator closed the file.

“Mr. Sterling, we will need you to answer several questions.””

Adrian looked at me one last time.

His voice became quieter.

“You planned this.””

I held his gaze.

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I prepared for the day you finally showed everyone who you really were.””

The investigator moved toward him.

And as the officers reached for Adrian, he suddenly laughed.

Not because he was confident.

Because he remembered something.

Something that made his expression change.

“You think you won?””

Everyone stopped.

I looked at him.

“What did you say?””

Adrian smiled weakly.

“You still don’t know everything.””

The investigator frowned.

“Explain.””

Adrian looked directly at me.

“There is someone else who knows the truth about this company.””

My heart tightened.

Because the fear in his eyes was real.

May you like

And for the first time that night…

I wondered if Adrian had one final secret.
