Chapter 9: The Truth About Emma
I looked at Jason.
My brother.
The person who had stood beside me when I married Vanessa.
The person who held Emma the day she was born.
The person who had looked me in the eyes for six years and let me believe everything was normal.
The voicemail played again in my head.
Ask your brother why he was the first person to know Emma wasn’t your biological daughter.
I couldn’t breathe.
“Jason.””
He didn’t answer.
“Look at me.””
Slowly, he raised his eyes.
And I saw it.
The guilt.
Not confusion.
Not anger.
Guilt.
“Is it true?””
Vanessa started crying.
“Michael…”
I held up my hand.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I need him to answer.””
Jason swallowed.
“Michael, it’s complicated.””
I laughed quietly.
“Complicated?””
I pointed toward Emma.
“My daughter is standing in this room while I find out everyone has been lying to me.””
Jason looked at Emma.
His expression broke.
“I never wanted her to get hurt.””
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
He looked down.
“Because Vanessa begged me not to.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
She closed her eyes.
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
“That you would leave.””
The words landed heavily.
I stared at her.
“You thought I would leave my daughter?””
She started crying harder.
“I didn’t know.””
“You didn’t know me?””
She had no answer.
Jason stepped forward.
“Michael, listen.””
“No.””
“I need you to understand what happened.””
I looked at him.
“Then explain.””
He took a deep breath.
“When Emma was born, there were complications.””
I remembered that day.
The hospital.
The fear.
Vanessa crying.
Doctors rushing.
Everything had been chaos.
Jason continued.
“The hospital ran additional tests because of the complications.””
My stomach tightened.
“And?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“She found out first.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I got the results before you did.””
“Why?””
“Because I was the emergency contact.””
I stared at her.
“What did the results say?””
She looked at Emma.
Then at me.
“They said there was a mistake.””
My heart sank.
“What kind of mistake?””
She whispered:
“Emma’s father.””
The room became silent.
I felt like the ground disappeared.
“No.””
Vanessa reached toward me.
“I never wanted this.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
My voice became louder.
“No, because I was there.””
I pointed toward Emma.
“I raised her.””
“I know.””
“I stayed up when she was sick.””
“I know.””
“I taught her to ride a bike.””
“I know.””
“Then what does DNA change?””
Nobody spoke.
Because nobody had an answer.
Emma looked confused.
“Daddy?””
I immediately turned toward her.
My voice softened.
“Come here.””
She ran into my arms.
I held her tightly.
No test.
No secret.
No person outside that room could change what she meant to me.
But I still needed the truth.
“Who is her biological father?””
Vanessa looked away.
Jason answered.
“Daniel.””
Everything stopped.
The man outside.
The man who knew about the camera.
The man who had been waiting for this moment.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You knew?””
She nodded.
“For years.””
“Why was he involved now?””
“Because he found out I still had the evidence.””
“The drive?””
“Yes.””
“And the camera?””
Daniel’s voice came from outside.
“You’re asking the wrong questions.””
Everyone froze.
The back door slowly opened.
Daniel stepped inside.
Calm.
Controlled.
Like he belonged there.
Jason moved in front of us.
“Don’t.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You always were the loyal one.””
I stared at him.
“You were watching my daughter.””
His expression changed slightly.
“I was watching for the drive.””
“Don’t call her that.””
Daniel looked at Emma.
“She’s not just your daughter.””
My anger surged.
“She is.””
Daniel sighed.
“Michael, you have no idea what Vanessa did.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
Daniel smiled.
“Still protecting him?””
“No.””
Her voice became stronger.
“I’m protecting Emma.””
Daniel looked at the rabbit in my hand.
“You found it.””
I tightened my grip.
“You wanted this.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked at Vanessa.
“Because she stole something from me.””
Jason shook his head.
“No.””
Daniel ignored him.
“She stole proof that could destroy powerful people.””
I stared.
“What people?””
Daniel smiled.
“People who thought they were untouchable.””
The house became silent.
Then police sirens sounded in the distance.
Daniel’s expression changed.
“You called them?””
I looked at him.
“No.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I did.””
Daniel looked at her.
For the first time, he seemed afraid.
“You wouldn’t.””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“I should have done it six years ago.””
Daniel stepped backward.
But before he moved, he smiled.
“You still don’t understand.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He looked at Emma.
“The drive isn’t the only copy.””
My heart sank.
“What did you do?””
Daniel smiled.
“I made sure the truth would come out.””
Then the police lights flashed through the windows.
And Daniel raised his hands.
May you like
But before he surrendered, he looked directly at me.
“Ask Vanessa what happened the night Emma was born.””
