Chapter 6: The Recording That Changed Everything

I stood in the middle of my living room staring at my brother.

The man who taught me how to ride a bike.

The man who gave a speech at my wedding.

The man Emma used to call Uncle Jay.

Now he was standing in my house at midnight, explaining why my daughter had a hidden camera in her room.

I didn’t know what hurt more.

The fear.

Or the betrayal.

“Start talking.””

Jason looked at me.

“Michael.””

“No.””

I pointed toward Emma.

“My daughter was watched.””

His expression changed.

“I know.””

“And you knew?””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I felt something break inside me.

“How long?””

Jason didn’t answer.

“How long did you know?””

“Three months.””

Emma gasped.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

I stared at him.

“Three months?””

“I was trying to find out who was behind it.””

“You could have told me.””

“If I told you too early, you would have reacted exactly like this.””

I stepped closer.

“Exactly like what?””

“Angry.””

“Because someone was spying on my child?””

Jason nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Then I had every right to be angry.””

He looked down.

“I know.””

The honesty almost made it worse.

Vanessa sat on the couch.

Her hands were shaking.

“I should have told you.””

I looked at her.

“Yes.””

“I was scared.””

“You let me believe everything was normal.””

“I wanted it to be.””

I looked around the house.

The place where we celebrated birthdays.

Where Emma learned to walk.

Where I thought my family was safe.

“Who is doing this?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Jason.

“Who?””

He took a deep breath.

“Someone who thinks Emma has something.””

I frowned.

“She’s six.””

“I know.””

“Then what could she possibly have?””

Jason looked at the phone.

“The drawing.””

I remembered.

The family picture.

I looked at Emma.

“Why does everyone care about that drawing?””

Emma slowly walked to her backpack.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I still have it.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa stood.

“Emma.””

My daughter held it tightly.

“This one?””

Jason’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“Daddy kept it.””

I looked at the paper.

My heart sank.

I had never noticed anything unusual about it.

It was just a child’s drawing.

Until now.

Jason moved closer.

“Don’t open it.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because that’s what they’re looking for.””

I unfolded the paper.

At first, I saw only colors.

A house.

A tree.

Our family.

Then I noticed something.

A small mark near the corner.

A tiny symbol drawn in black.

“What is this?””

Jason went silent.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I thought it was just a child’s mark.””

“It isn’t,” Jason said.

My eyes moved between them.

“Then what is it?””

Jason looked toward the windows.

Then lowered his voice.

“Emma didn’t draw that.””

I froze.

“What?””

He pointed at the paper.

“She copied it.””

“From where?””

Nobody answered.

Then Emma spoke.

Quietly.

“From the man.””

I turned to her.

“What man?””

She looked at the drawing.

“The man who came into my room.””

The room went cold.

“What did he tell you?””

She looked up at me.

“He said…”

Her voice trembled.

“He said Mommy had something that belonged to him.””

Vanessa’s face went pale.

Jason whispered:

“No.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What does he mean?””

She started crying.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

*YOU FOUND THE DRAWING. NOW ASK YOUR WIFE WHAT SHE STOLE FROM ME.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She stared at the screen.

May you like

And whispered:

“He knows everything.””
