Chapter 2: The Room That Wasn’t Safe

I didn’t move for several seconds.

My mind was trying to catch up with what I had just heard.

A camera.

In my daughter’s room.

A man’s voice.

My wife standing there like she had been caught hiding something much bigger than a phone.

Emma grabbed my hand.

“Daddy?””

I looked down at her.

Her eyes were full of tears.

“How long?””

She sniffed.

“I don’t know.””

My heart broke.

“Emma, what do you mean you don’t know?””

She looked toward Vanessa.

Then quickly looked away.

“I saw the little light.””

“What light?””

“On the wall.””

My stomach tightened.

I turned to Vanessa.

“What is she talking about?””

Vanessa finally looked at me.

Her voice was quieter now.

“Listen to me.””

“No.””

“Please.””

“No, Vanessa. You need to listen to me.””

I pointed toward Emma.

“She is six years old.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“You don’t understand.””

“I keep hearing that.””

“Because you don’t know everything.””

I laughed once.

A cold, empty laugh.

“My daughter found a phone hidden under her bed. An audio file talked about a camera. And you’re telling me I don’t understand?””

Vanessa looked away.

That was the answer.

I took Emma’s hand.

“Show me your room.””

She nodded.

We walked down the hallway.

Every step felt heavier.

The house that had always felt warm suddenly felt unfamiliar.

The family photos on the walls.

The toys scattered near the stairs.

The drawings Emma had taped beside her bedroom door.

Everything looked the same.

But I knew something had changed.

Emma stopped outside her room.

She didn’t open the door.

“Daddy…”

“What?””

“Promise you won’t leave me.””

I felt something crack inside me.

I knelt down.

“I’m not leaving you.””

She searched my face.

“Promise?””

“I promise.””

Only then did she turn the handle.

Her room looked normal.

A small bed.

Stuffed animals.

Books stacked beside the window.

Her pink blanket.

I walked inside slowly.

“What did you see, Emma?””

She pointed toward the bookshelf.

“Over there.””

I moved closer.

At first, I saw nothing.

Then I noticed it.

A tiny hole.

Almost invisible.

Near the corner of the shelf.

My hands became cold.

I reached toward it.

Vanessa appeared at the doorway.

“Don’t touch anything.””

I turned around.

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

“Why, Vanessa?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

For the first time that night, she looked less like someone hiding a secret.

She looked like someone trapped by one.

“Because if you know the truth, everything changes.””

I stared at her.

“Everything already changed.””

She stepped into the room.

“Please.””

“No.””

“Listen to me.””

“You had a camera in our daughter’s bedroom.””

“I didn’t put it there.””

The sentence stopped me.

“What?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“I didn’t put it there.””

“Then who did?””

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer, the phone in my hand buzzed.

A new audio file appeared.

No name.

No number.

Just one word.

PLAY.

Emma moved closer to me.

“Daddy…”

I looked at Vanessa.

She was staring at the phone.

Her face was completely white.

“Don’t play it.””

My grip tightened.

“Why?””

“Because you won’t be able to pretend anymore.””

I pressed play.

For three seconds, there was only silence.

Then a familiar voice whispered through the speaker.

A voice I knew.

A voice that had been inside this house many times.

“Vanessa, you need to move the camera tonight.””

I looked at my wife.

She closed her eyes.

Then the voice continued.

“And make sure her father never finds out what Emma recorded.””

My heart stopped.

Recorded?

Emma looked up at me.

“I didn’t record anything, Daddy.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“What did he mean?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she slowly looked toward the closet.

And whispered:

“He knows you found it.””

May you like

At that exact moment…

Someone knocked on our front door.
