Chapter 7: The Truth Vanessa Buried

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking like words.

YOU FOUND THE DRAWING. NOW ASK YOUR WIFE WHAT SHE STOLE FROM ME.

My hand tightened around the phone.

The room felt smaller.

The walls that had protected my family for years suddenly felt like they were closing in.

I looked at Vanessa.

She didn’t deny it.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Not the message.

Not the hidden camera.

Not even my brother’s betrayal.

It was the silence.

“Vanessa.””

She looked up slowly.

“I need the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.””

“No more protecting me.””

“I wasn’t protecting you.””

“Then who were you protecting?””

She looked at Emma.

And my heart sank.

Because the answer was obvious.

“Tell me.””

Vanessa wiped her face.

“Before I met you, I worked for a company owned by my father.””

I said nothing.

“He wasn’t just a businessman.””

Her voice became quieter.

“He collected information on people.””

Jason nodded.

“He had files on everyone.””

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

“I found out later.””

Vanessa continued.

“When I realized what he was doing, I tried to leave.””

“Why didn’t you go to the police?””

She looked down.

“Because I was afraid nobody would believe me.””

I almost laughed.

“You expect me to believe that?””

She looked at me.

“I expect you to understand that I was young, scared, and trapped.””

The room went silent.

Then Emma walked over and held my hand.

I looked down at her.

She was listening to everything.

A six-year-old child should not know these things.

She should be worried about cartoons.

School.

Birthday parties.

Not secrets.

“Why the drawing?”” I asked.

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“Because it was the only copy.””

“Copy of what?””

“The evidence.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Evidence against your father?””

She nodded.

“He kept records of everything he did.””

Jason crossed his arms.

“When Vanessa left, she took something from him.””

“What?””

“A drive.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You stole it?””

She shook her head.

“I copied it.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew one day he would come after me.””

I looked toward the hallway.

“The camera.””

She nodded.

“He was trying to find it.””

“But why would he think Emma had it?””

Vanessa looked at the drawing.

“Because he saw her make the symbol.””

My stomach tightened.

“When?””

“Months ago.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know if she remembered.””

I turned toward Emma.

“Emma?””

She looked scared.

“I’m sorry, Daddy.””

My heart broke.

“You have nothing to be sorry for.””

She hugged my waist.

“I saw Mommy put something in the closet.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“What?””

Emma continued.

“A little box.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You hid something in the house?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Where?””

“In the old storage room.””

Jason suddenly looked toward the back hallway.

“Wait.””

“What?””

“Did anyone else know about that room?””

Vanessa went pale.

“My father.””

The three of us looked at each other.

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

The house went dark.

Emma screamed.

I grabbed her immediately.

“Stay with me.””

A sound came from the kitchen.

A cabinet opening.

Jason moved toward it.

I grabbed his shoulder.

“No.””

“We need to see.””

“No. We need to think.””

Vanessa whispered:

“He’s here.””

I looked at her.

“How do you know?””

“Because he always does this.””

“What?””

“Turns off the power.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

“To make people panic.””

The emergency lights turned on.

The kitchen appeared empty.

But something was different.

The back door was open.

The lock was broken.

Jason walked closer.

“He was inside already.””

I looked at him.

“What do you mean?””

“He didn’t come through the front.””

My eyes moved around the room.

“He came looking for the box.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“No.””

“What?””

She whispered:

“The box isn’t in the storage room anymore.””

Nobody spoke.

“What?””

“I moved it.””

“When?””

“Tonight.””

I stared at her.

“Where?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Somewhere he would never look.””

“Where?””

She hesitated.

Then slowly reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small key.

My heart stopped.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at me.

“I hid it somewhere only Emma knew.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Emma?””

My daughter’s face changed.

Like she suddenly remembered something.

“The teddy bear.””

Vanessa nodded.

“The one she carries everywhere.””

Emma looked down at the stuffed rabbit in her arms.

I felt my blood run cold.

The same stuffed rabbit she had been holding all night.

The same one she had carried when she found the phone.

Jason stepped forward.

“Open it.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because if he knows we found it…”

The sound of footsteps came from outside.

Everyone froze.

A shadow moved across the window.

Then a voice spoke from the backyard.

“Vanessa.””

My wife grabbed my arm.

“He found us.””

The voice came again.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

“You should have left the box where I could find it.””

Emma started crying.

May you like

And then the man outside said the one thing that made my entire body go cold.

“Michael, you really should ask your wife why she lied about how Emma was born.””
