Chapter 3: The Man Behind The Door

The knock came again.

Three slow taps.

Not loud.

Not aggressive.

Almost polite.

That somehow made it worse.

Emma grabbed my hand so tightly that her fingernails pressed into my skin.

“Daddy…”

I looked at Vanessa.

She wasn’t looking at the door anymore.

She was looking at Emma.

And there was something in her eyes that I had never seen before.

Regret.

“Who is it?”” I whispered.

Vanessa didn’t answer.

I stepped in front of Emma.

“Who is at the door?””

Her lips trembled.

“Daniel.””

The name meant nothing to me.

But the way she said it did.

Like she had been afraid of hearing it again.

“Who is Daniel?””

Vanessa looked down.

“He’s someone from my past.””

The knocking stopped.

For a moment, the house became completely silent.

Then the doorbell rang.

Emma jumped.

I walked toward the hallway.

“Stay here.””

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?””

“Because you don’t know what he wants.””

I pulled away.

“I know exactly what I want.””

I walked to the front door.

Every instinct in my body told me not to open it.

But I needed answers.

I looked through the small glass panel.

A man stood outside.

Early forties.

Dark jacket.

Calm expression.

Too calm.

He wasn’t angry.

He wasn’t nervous.

He looked like he already knew what was happening inside.

I opened the door halfway.

“Can I help you?””

The man smiled slightly.

“You must be Michael.””

My stomach tightened.

“How do you know my name?””

He ignored the question.

“I need to speak with Vanessa.””

“She’s not available.””

The man looked past me.

Toward the hallway.

“Vanessa.””

Her face appeared behind me.

“Daniel.””

The man smiled.

“There she is.””

I stepped outside and closed the door behind me.

“You need to leave.””

Daniel looked amused.

“You don’t even know what this is about.””

“I know enough.””

“No, you don’t.””

His eyes moved toward the house.

“Actually, you know almost nothing.””

I felt anger rise.

“Then explain.””

Daniel tilted his head.

“Ask your wife why she kept the phone.””

I froze.

“How do you know about the phone?””

His smile disappeared.

For the first time, he looked serious.

“Because that phone wasn’t supposed to be found.””

The words made my chest tighten.

I stepped closer.

“What did you do?””

Daniel sighed.

“You think I’m the villain because that’s the easiest explanation.””

“You’re standing outside my house after a hidden camera was found in my daughter’s room.””

“I didn’t install it.””

“Then who did?””

He looked at Vanessa through the window.

And that answer scared me.

Because he didn’t look angry at her.

He looked disappointed.

“Ask her.””

I turned around.

“Vanessa.””

She stood frozen.

Daniel continued.

“She was supposed to destroy the evidence.””

My head snapped back.

“What evidence?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Daniel, stop.””

“No.””

His voice became sharper.

“You spent months pretending everything was fine.””

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked at me.

“Your wife has been trying to protect someone.””

“Who?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Your brother.””

The world seemed to stop.

“My brother?””

Vanessa rushed toward the door.

“Michael, don’t listen to him.””

But I barely heard her.

My brother.

The person I had trusted my entire life.

The person who had held Emma when she was born.

The person who called himself her favorite uncle.

“No.””

Daniel watched my reaction.

“You really didn’t know.””

“Know what?””

Vanessa opened the door.

“Daniel, leave.””

But he looked at me.

“Ask your wife why your daughter started sleeping with her bedroom door locked.””

My eyes moved to Vanessa.

Slowly.

“Is that true?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

“Vanessa…”

“I was trying to handle it.””

“Handle what?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Something I thought I could fix.””

“You thought you could fix someone putting a camera in our daughter’s room?””

“I told you, I didn’t put it there.””

“Then why hide it?””

She had no answer.

Daniel took a step back.

“I gave her a chance to tell you.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because I knew what was coming.””

“What’s coming?””

Daniel looked toward the house.

Then toward Emma’s bedroom window.

“Your daughter saw something she wasn’t supposed to see.””

My blood ran cold.

“What did she see?””

Before Daniel could answer, the front door opened behind me.

Emma stood there.

“Daddy.””

I turned around.

“Emma, go back inside.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice was small.

But steady.

“I know who the man was.””

Everyone froze.

I looked at my daughter.

“What man?””

She looked at Daniel.

Then at Vanessa.

Then whispered:

“The man who came into my room when Mommy was crying.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Daniel’s expression changed.

And that was when I realized something.

May you like

Everyone in that house knew a piece of the truth.

Everyone except me.
