Chapter 4: The Secret Emma Carried

I brought Emma back inside.

I locked the front door.

Not because I was afraid of Daniel.

Not anymore.

I was afraid of everything I didn’t know.

Emma sat on the couch between Vanessa and me.

But she wouldn’t touch Vanessa.

That hurt more than anything.

My daughter used to run to her mother every morning.

Now she kept inches of space between them.

“Emma,” I said softly.

“You’re not in trouble.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

“Then tell me what happened.””

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa whispered:

“Emma…”

“No.””

My daughter’s voice surprised both of us.

She looked at me.

“I want to tell Daddy.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

I took a breath.

“Okay.””

Emma held onto her stuffed rabbit.

“The first time was when you went on your work trip.””

My heart sank.

“What first time?””

She looked down.

“Someone came into my room.””

Vanessa started crying.

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

She shook her head quickly.

“No. Not like this.””

“Then what did you know?””

Emma continued.

“He told Mommy not to worry.””

My body went still.

“What did he look like?””

She squeezed the rabbit.

“I couldn’t see his face.””

“Why?””

“Because it was dark.””

“Did he hurt you?””

Emma immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I felt a small wave of relief.

But it disappeared when she continued.

“He just looked around my room.””

“Why?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she pointed toward the hallway.

“He was looking for something.””

“What?””

“My drawing.””

I frowned.

“Your drawing?””

She nodded.

“The one I made for you.””

I remembered it.

A family picture.

Me.

Emma.

Vanessa.

A house with a big yellow sun.

“What was special about it?””

Emma looked confused.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa suddenly stood up.

“Emma, go upstairs.””

“No.””

“Emma.””

“No!””

Her voice cracked.

I stood immediately.

“Don’t.””

Vanessa stopped.

I looked at her.

“Not anymore.””

She looked broken.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“By keeping secrets?””

“I was scared.””

“Of who?””

She didn’t answer.

That was becoming a pattern.

I turned back to Emma.

“What happened after the man looked for the drawing?””

“He left.””

“Did he come back?””

Emma hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Last night.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“What?””

Emma looked at her mother.

“You told him not to.””

The room became silent.

I stared at Vanessa.

“You talked to him last night?””

She looked like she wanted to disappear.

“I can explain.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“You can’t explain anymore. You can only tell the truth.””

She sat down slowly.

“I found out someone was watching our house.””

“Who?””

“I didn’t know.””

“Then why didn’t you call the police?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because I thought it was my fault.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the floor.

“Before we met… I was involved with people I shouldn’t have been involved with.””

Daniel’s words came back.

Someone from her past.

I felt like I was hearing about a stranger.

“Who is Daniel?””

She looked up.

“Someone who tried to help me.””

“And my brother?””

Her face changed.

That was the answer.

“Vanessa.””

She swallowed.

“Your brother wasn’t supposed to be involved.””

My heart dropped.

“Wasn’t supposed to?””

She reached for my hand.

I pulled away.

“What did he do?””

Before she could answer, something crashed upstairs.

Emma screamed.

We all looked toward the ceiling.

Then came a sound.

A slow movement.

A floorboard creaking.

Someone was walking inside the house.

My blood turned cold.

I whispered:

“We locked the door.””

Vanessa stood frozen.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“He never needed the front door.””

I looked at her.

“What are you talking about?””

May you like

She pointed toward the stairs.

“He has a key.””
