Chapter 5: The Key That Should Not Exist

For a moment, nobody moved.

The sound upstairs came again.

A slow step.

Then another.

Emma buried her face against my side.

“Daddy…”

I wrapped my arm around her.

“It’s okay.””

But I knew I was lying.

Because nothing about that night was okay.

Not the hidden phone.

Not the camera.

Not the stranger who knew my name.

Not the fact that someone was standing inside our house.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You said he has a key.””

Her eyes filled with fear.

“I thought he did.””

“You thought?””

“I don’t know.””

I stared at her.

“How can you not know?””

She shook her head.

“Because I never gave him one.””

Another sound came from upstairs.

A drawer opening.

Emma looked toward the stairs.

“He’s looking for something.””

My heart tightened.

“How do you know?””

She whispered:

“Because that’s what he did before.””

I felt anger rise in my chest.

Someone had been inside my home.

Near my daughter.

And I had no idea.

I grabbed my phone.

Vanessa immediately grabbed my arm.

“Don’t call him.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

“The police.””

The answer shocked me.

“Why would you not want me to call the police?””

“Because if they come, he’ll know.””

“Know what?””

“That we found the phone.””

I pulled my arm away.

“He already knows.””

Vanessa looked toward the stairs.

“No.””

Her voice became quieter.

“He thinks we found only one thing.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Before she could answer, the hallway light upstairs turned off.

Darkness spread across the second floor.

Emma started crying.

“Daddy…”

I picked her up.

“Stay behind me.””

I moved toward the stairs.

Vanessa followed.

“Michael, wait.””

“No.””

“You don’t understand who you’re dealing with.””

I stopped halfway.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then tell me.””

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw the woman I married.

Not the woman hiding secrets.

Not the woman trying to protect herself.

Just Vanessa.

Scared.

“I met Daniel years before I met you.””

I said nothing.

“He knew people who could get information. People who could find anyone.””

“Why?””

She looked away.

“Because I was running.””

“From who?””

She whispered:

“My father.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“My father wasn’t the man everyone thought he was.””

I felt confused.

“Your father died before we met.””

“Yes.””

“But you’re acting like he’s still part of this.””

“He is.””

A chill moved through me.

“How?””

Vanessa looked upstairs.

“Because the person in this house isn’t working alone.””

The floor creaked again.

This time closer.

Emma buried her face against my shoulder.

I moved forward.

Then a voice came from upstairs.

“Vanessa.””

My wife froze.

I knew that voice.

Not because I had heard it before.

Because of how Emma reacted.

She recognized it.

The same fear returned to her eyes.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“That’s him.””

I tightened my grip around her.

“Who is it?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

The voice came again.

“Vanessa, we need to talk.””

I stepped up the stairs.

“Come down here.””

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Slowly.

A man appeared at the top of the stairs.

I stopped.

Because I knew him.

Everyone knew him.

He had been at our family dinners.

He had held my daughter’s hand.

He had called himself family.

My brother.

Jason.

He looked at me.

Then at Emma.

Then at Vanessa.

No one spoke.

Finally, I whispered:

“What are you doing in my house?””

Jason looked exhausted.

Not guilty.

Not angry.

Exhausted.

“Michael…”

“Don’t.””

My voice shook.

“Don’t say my name like you’re the victim.””

He looked down.

“I came here to stop this.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Stop what? The camera? The phone? The lies?””

His eyes moved to Vanessa.

“You told him?””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“No.””

“Then why is he looking at you like that?””

I stepped between them.

“Answer me.””

Jason sighed.

“I didn’t put the camera there.””

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why were you talking about it?””

His face changed.

“What did you hear?””

I held up the phone.

“The audio.””

Jason went silent.

Then he whispered:

“You shouldn’t have played that.””

“Why?””

“Because now whoever planted it knows we found it.””

My blood ran cold.

“We?””

Jason looked at Vanessa.

And that was when I realized something.

May you like

They weren’t hiding the same secret.

They were hiding the same person.
