Chapter 9: The Truth Ryan Buried
I stared at the photograph until the words on the back stopped making sense.
She is alive.
Three simple words.
Three words that made my entire body go cold.
My father looked at the picture again.
Then at me.
“Emma…”
I couldn’t answer.
The woman standing beside Ryan and Diane was someone I had never met.
But there was something familiar about her.
Something I couldn’t explain.
The shape of her face.
The way she looked at the camera.
Like I had seen her somewhere before.
Daniel stood across from us, watching every reaction.
“You want to know who she is?””
I looked at him.
“Yes.””
His smile disappeared.
“Then ask your husband.””
My chest tightened.
“Where is Ryan?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That told me enough.
My father stepped forward.
“You’re enjoying this.””
Daniel looked at him.
“No.””
His expression became serious.
“I’m correcting a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
Daniel nodded.
“Years ago, people in this family made decisions that hurt innocent people. Your grandmother tried to fix those mistakes.””
I looked at the photograph.
“And now?””
“Now the truth is finally coming out.””
I wanted to believe him.
But I couldn’t.
Not after everything.
Everyone had a story.
Everyone had a reason.
And somehow, I was always the person left to deal with the damage.
My phone suddenly rang.
Ryan.
I stared at the screen.
My father looked at me.
“Don’t answer alone.””
I nodded.
Then I accepted the call.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then Ryan’s voice.
“Emma.””
I closed my eyes.
Hearing him still hurt.
“Where are you?””
“I need to see you.””
“No.””
A pause.
“I know you hate me.””
I looked at my father.
“That’s not the problem.””
“Then what is?””
I swallowed.
“The problem is I don’t know if anything you ever told me was real.””
The silence on the other end was painful.
Finally, Ryan whispered:
“Can we meet?””
I almost refused.
Then I remembered the photograph.
The woman.
The secret.
“Where?””
He gave me an address.
A small park near the old neighborhood where we used to live.
My father wanted to come.
I told him yes.
I wasn’t hiding anymore.
When we arrived, Ryan was sitting alone on a bench.
He looked nothing like the man who had stood in my kitchen.
The confident husband.
The man who always had an answer.
Now he looked exhausted.
Broken.
He stood when he saw me.
“Emma.””
I stayed several feet away.
“Tell me who she is.””
Ryan froze.
I held up the photograph.
His face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
My father stepped forward.
“Start talking.””
Ryan sat back down.
His hands shook.
“The woman in the picture is Rachel.””
I frowned.
“Who is Rachel?””
Ryan looked at me.
“She was supposed to be your mother.””
The world went quiet.
I stared at him.
“What?””
Ryan took a deep breath.
“Before you were born, there was a legal battle between your grandmother and her son.””
“My uncle?””
He nodded.
“Daniel.””
I felt confused.
“What does my mother have to do with him?””
Ryan looked away.
“Your mother found out Daniel was trying to manipulate your grandmother’s finances.””
I listened carefully.
“She reported it.””
My father’s expression changed.
“What happened?””
Ryan swallowed.
“Daniel tried to destroy her reputation.””
My hands went cold.
“And?””
Ryan looked at me.
“He convinced everyone she abandoned you.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“That’s impossible.””
Ryan shook his head.
“Your grandmother knew the truth.””
“Then why did she let me believe my mother left?””
Ryan looked down.
“Because Rachel disappeared before the case was finished.””
My father stepped closer.
“Disappeared?””
Ryan nodded.
“Everyone thought she was gone.””
I looked at the photograph.
“But she’s alive.””
“Yes.””
My voice trembled.
“Where?””
Ryan looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
I stared at him.
“Don’t lie to me.””
“I’m not.””
For once, he sounded honest.
“Mom and Daniel found out recently.””
“About Rachel?””
“Yes.””
“Then why hide it from me?””
Ryan closed his eyes.
“Because they were afraid.””
“Of what?””
He looked at me.
“Your mother.””
The answer shocked me.
“My mother?””
Ryan nodded.
“She knows what happened.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“What exactly happened?””
Ryan looked at both of us.
“Daniel wasn’t just stealing money.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“He was trying to take control of the entire family estate.””
“And my inheritance?””
Ryan nodded.
“That was only one piece.””
I looked at him.
“Why did you help him?””
Ryan’s eyes filled with regret.
“Because I was scared.””
“Of Daniel?””
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Of losing everything.””
The honesty hurt.
Because it was the first real thing he had given me in months.
“I thought if I helped Mom fix the money problem, everything would go back to normal.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t fix anything.””
“I know.””
“You destroyed my trust.””
“I know.””
The wind moved through the trees.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Ryan reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I knew one day you would need it.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
He looked at me.
“A letter from your mother.””
My heart stopped.
“My mother?””
Ryan nodded.
“She wrote it years ago.””
“Why do you have it?””
His eyes dropped.
“Because my mother stole it before you could see it.””
My father took the envelope.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
The first line made my knees weak.
*Dear Emma, I have spent my entire life trying to find my way back to you.*
I covered my mouth.
My mother was alive.
She had been looking for me.
And someone had kept us apart.
Then Ryan whispered:
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
May you like
He looked terrified.
“Your mother knows where the missing inheritance money went.””
