Chapter 5: The Secret Beneath The Missing Money
The woman in the dark suit placed the folder on the table between us.
Nobody touched it.
Not me.
Not Ryan.
Not even my father.
The room felt frozen.
“I’m Agent Laura Bennett,” she said calmly.
“I’m working with the financial investigation team reviewing several fraudulent transactions connected to your accounts.””
I stared at the folder.
My hands felt numb.
“How bad is it?””
Agent Bennett looked at me carefully.
“That depends on what you already know.””
My father stepped beside me.
“She knows the inheritance funds were moved without her permission.””
Agent Bennett nodded.
“We confirmed that.””
She opened the folder.
“But the missing money was only part of the problem.””
Ryan looked nervous.
“What does that mean?””
Agent Bennett turned toward him.
“It means someone was using Emma Parker’s identity to hide a larger financial scheme.””
My stomach tightened.
I looked at Ryan.
He immediately shook his head.
“I didn’t know about that.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“You already admitted you knew about the transfers.””
Ryan looked down.
“I know.””
Agent Bennett placed several pages on the table.
“The account created under your name was not just used to receive money. It was used as a temporary holding account.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“To make the transactions appear like normal personal transfers.””
I looked at the documents.
There were dozens of transactions.
Some were small.
Some were large.
But they all connected back to the same people.
Diane Whitmore.
Ryan.
And several companies I had never heard of.
“Who owns those companies?””
Agent Bennett glanced at the records.
“Most of them are connected to businesses previously managed by Diane Whitmore.””
My father looked at Ryan.
“Your mother was hiding debt.””
Ryan closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The answer came quietly.
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
He looked miserable.
“I knew she had problems.””
“What kind of problems?””
Ryan hesitated.
“Millions in debt.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Not because Diane was struggling.
People struggle.
Families struggle.
That wasn’t the issue.
The issue was that they chose to solve their problems by taking from me.
By deceiving me.
By making me feel guilty for protecting what was mine.
Agent Bennett continued.
“The reason this investigation expanded is because we found evidence that the identity documents used for the fake account were prepared before the first transfer.””
My father frowned.
“Prepared by who?””
She looked at him.
“That’s what we’re still investigating.””
Ryan suddenly stood.
“Can I speak to Emma alone?””
My father immediately said:
“No.””
Ryan looked at him.
“This is between my wife and me.””
I looked at Ryan.
“No.””
He froze.
I took a breath.
“Nothing is just between us anymore.””
His face fell.
I hated seeing him hurt.
That was the worst part.
Some part of me still remembered the man I married.
The man who brought me coffee every morning.
The man who held me when my grandmother died.
The man who promised me forever.
But that man had made choices.
And now I was facing the consequences of them.
Ryan sat back down.
Agent Bennett closed the folder.
“There is one more thing you should know.””
My father looked at her.
“What?””
“We found a safety deposit box connected to the fraudulent account.””
Ryan looked confused.
“A safety deposit box?””
Agent Bennett nodded.
“We believe it contains records related to the transfers.””
I looked at her.
“Can I see it?””
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
“Because we need to secure it first.””
She paused.
“But there is something unusual.””
“What?””
Agent Bennett looked at Ryan.
“The box was registered using two authorized names.””
My heart started beating faster.
“Whose names?””
She looked at her notes.
“Diane Whitmore.””
A pause.
“And Ryan Parker.””
The room went silent.
Ryan looked like he couldn’t breathe.
“No.””
My father stared at him.
“You said you only knew about the transfers.””
Ryan shook his head quickly.
“I didn’t know about any box.””
Agent Bennett watched him closely.
“That’s interesting.””
Ryan looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because your signature was used to access it.””
I stared at Ryan.
Another signature.
Another lie.
Another thing he claimed not to know.
“Ryan.””
He looked at me.
“I swear.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””
He looked broken.
“Emma, please.””
But before I could answer, my phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then Agent Bennett said:
“Answer it.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because whoever is calling may know something we don’t.””
My hand trembled as I accepted the call.
“Hello?””
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a woman’s voice whispered:
“Emma Parker?””
“Yes.””
“I know what Diane did.””
I sat up.
“Who is this?””
The woman took a shaky breath.
“My name is Melissa.””
I waited.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
“I used to work for Diane.””
My father moved closer.
“What did she do?””
The woman’s voice lowered.
“She didn’t just steal your inheritance.””
I gripped the phone.
“Then what did she do?””
A pause.
Then:
“She planned to make sure you never discovered the truth.””
The call suddenly ended.
I stared at the screen.
May you like
And for the first time, I wondered if the attack in my kitchen wasn’t meant to scare me.
Maybe it was meant to stop me.
