Chapter 6: The Witness Diane Tried To Silence
The next morning, my father drove me home.
Not because I was ready to return.
I wasn’t.
But because I needed to see the place where everything happened.
The house looked exactly the same.
That was the strangest part.
The same front door.
The same flowers outside.
The same curtains in the windows.
A normal house.
A house that had been hiding an ugly truth.
My father parked the car.
“Are you sure?””
I looked at the kitchen window.
“No.””
He nodded.
“Good answer.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“People who pretend they aren’t afraid usually make dangerous choices.””
I smiled faintly.
“That sounds like something Grandma would say.””
“She taught me well.””
We walked inside together.
The kitchen had been cleaned.
The cane was gone.
The broken cup was gone.
But I could still see everything.
The place where I fell.
The place where Ryan stood.
The place where I realized I was alone.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
It was from Melissa.
I found something. Meet me before Diane finds out.
My father read my expression.
“What happened?””
I showed him.
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“I need answers.””
“You also need protection.””
I looked at him.
“Dad.””
He sighed.
“I know.””
An hour later, we met Melissa at a small coffee shop across town.
She looked nervous.
She was probably in her late forties.
Tired eyes.
Simple clothes.
Someone who looked like she had been carrying a secret for too long.
When she saw me, she immediately stood.
“Emma?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at my father.
“You brought him.””
“He knows everything.””
Melissa looked relieved.
“Good.””
We sat down.
She wrapped both hands around her coffee cup.
“I worked for Diane for six years.””
“What kind of work?””
“Administrative assistant.””
My stomach tightened.
“So you saw the documents?””
She nodded.
“I handled her schedules, paperwork, financial appointments.””
My father leaned forward.
“What did you find?””
Melissa looked around before speaking.
“Diane wasn’t just taking your inheritance.””
“Then what?””
“She was trying to cover something that happened years ago.””
I frowned.
“What happened?””
Melissa hesitated.
Then she pulled a small envelope from her bag.
“I kept this because I knew one day someone would need it.””
She pushed it across the table.
Inside was a copy of an old document.
I read the name.
My grandmother.
My heart stopped.
“What is this?””
Melissa looked at me.
“Your grandmother’s original inheritance agreement.””
I looked confused.
“I already know about my inheritance.””
“No.””
Melissa shook her head.
“You know the version Diane wanted you to know.””
My father grabbed the document.
His expression changed as he read.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
That scared me.
“Dad?””
He handed it back.
At the bottom of the page was a clause I had never seen.
A condition.
A protection.
A warning.
I read the words slowly.
“If any family member attempts unauthorized access or fraudulent control of these funds, all financial authority will immediately transfer to the designated guardian.””
My eyes widened.
“Guardian?””
Melissa nodded.
“Your grandmother knew someone might try to take advantage of you.””
I looked at my father.
“Who is the guardian?””
He stared at the page.
Then he whispered:
“Me.””
The realization hit me.
My grandmother had predicted something like this.
She had prepared for it.
But why?
Why would she think someone in our family would try to steal from me?
Melissa reached into her bag again.
“There’s something else.””
She placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Diane.
Ryan.
And another man I didn’t recognize.
They were standing outside a bank.
The date was printed at the bottom.
Three years earlier.
Before my inheritance was even transferred.
My father looked at the picture.
Then at me.
“This wasn’t planned after your grandmother died.””
I felt a chill.
“It was planned before.””
Melissa nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at the photograph again.
“Who is the man with them?””
Melissa’s face turned pale.
“That’s the person who helped them create the fake documents.””
My father picked up the picture.
“Name?””
Melissa swallowed.
Then she said:
“Your uncle.””
I froze.
“My uncle?””
She nodded.
“And Emma…”
Her voice dropped.
“He’s the reason your grandmother changed the inheritance agreement in the first place.””
I stared at her.
“What did he do?””
Melissa looked toward the window.
May you like
Then quietly said:
“He tried to take everything from her too.””
